do you need to be hooked up to cable???dDarcy |
If you aren't going to hook up your TV to cable, specifically digital cable, and not take advantage of HDTV, then save yourself alot of money and get a non HD TV. Though, by 2010 (the FCC keeps pushing it back so I may be wrong on the year) everyone will be required to broadcast in HD. THat doesn't mean you need to an HDTV to watch the channels, just to take advantage of the picture.
If you want HD, LCD tvs are best in well-lit rooms (rooms with lots of sunlight) Plasmas are best in completely dark rooms. DLPs (technology is basicallly a spinning color wheel in front of a light bulb) can be cheaper at the much larger sizes, though do not have the ability to put on the wall. You need to ask yourself: How much money do I want to spend? How big a TV am I looking for? Do I care about HD and will I be picky about the picture? What am I connecting to the TV (# of inpputs needed for DVD player, VCR, cable box, Playstation, etc) and the type of connections needed. I have a 62 inch DLP from Samsung that has 1080p (which is the best picture right now, though no channels broadcast in that yet). GREAT. Also have a 32 inc LCD Samsung which doesn't output at the same as the DLP but is a nice TV. I watch HD all the time and have an HD DVD player, so I take advantage of the HD output. You can walk into Best Buy, and purchase a Westinghouse HD TV (between 32 and 42 inches) for probably under $1,000 and be very happy with it. You can also spend upwards to $5,000 on a 50 inch plasma 1080p that hangs on your wall that will blow your socks off. Check out this link. They explain the new TVs relatively well through all the links on the page: http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/learn ... re=sidebar |
I've looked at the Plasma and LCD TVs and they're great, especially if you need the flatness.
If flatness is not a requirement, the DLP rear projection models are just super... and usually a lot less expensive. And bigger. All good things. |
I have no flat walls to hang a TV, but do have a cornor that can hold a large 50-60 inch tv on stand. I know we don't want projection. Looking to have it hooked up to basic cable. |
DLP sounds like a good solution for you. Samsung, Sony and Mitsubishi, IMO, make the best (although Sony calls their version SXRD). You can get a good 1080i 50 inch from either manufacturer for probably $1,500 or less.
I recommend just doing a little research on the internet and then heading out to Best Buy or Circuit City (or your local electronic store) and comparing. If you have a BB near you that has a "Magnolia" store inside it, you can see all 3 manufacturers in one spot. Just like a computer, the longer you look and the longer you wait for the next "latest and greatest" something else will come along and make your's "last year's model". There is no new technology that is going to blow people out of the water (unless they are a home theater addict) that is coming out soon. Jump into HD, you'll wonder why you held onto the old TV for so long. I am very happy with my DLP and the only regret is I didn't get the 70" |
