I not qiite a newbe but . . .

I've read a lot of what is on this site and I really like it. Bella is our second sheepdog. We had to put Sydney down in December, she was 14 years old and a real lover. Bella is now seven months and about 65 pounds. She's going to be a big girl. We got her through PuppyFind from a breeder in Kansas City Mo., Linda Wenndell. After reading all the problems that others have had from Puppy Find I guess that we were very lucky. We felt good about Linda and the questions that she asked of us and the answers that we got from her about Bella and her parents. Our vet checked Bella out and said that she was fine. We now have a very rambunsious (sp) puppy that has stolen our hearts.

Most of the questions I have about a puppy have been addressed in other areas but one still remains. Bella does not come when she is called even with treats. We are still working on it but would like any assistance and clues.

We've solved, for the moment the jumping up on greeting as well as the biting. The remaining issues are barking when she is scolded and coming when she is called.

Welcome to the forum! Bella is a very pretty girl! The only advice I can offer is that Bella is a "teenager", she is probably getting the age that she wants to explore a little more, on her own, because she has figured out that something bad won't happen if she ventures more than 50 feet from her Daddy.

My Oliver is only 4.5 months, but he is already figuring this out. We are persistant with making him come when called. (Which usually means I have to carry him to the house  .)We have found that cheese can be very enticing though.

I am sure that other, more experienced members will be able to offer more advice. But, welcome to the forum, glad you are here!
My advice is never use the command unless you are in a position to reinforce it. Until she has it down, don't go calling for her in the midst of distractions when she is not likely to obey because that just weakens your authority. You can practice by putting her on a really long training lead and use a variety of really super delicious treats.
I found that if I use obedience as a game with Bingley he does much better. I just grab a handful of delicious treats and "play" for about ten minutes. He's disappointed when we're done!
Hi Bellas Dad,

I only recently had my computer up and running again so neglected to wish you Welcome when you first joined....so here goes "WELCOME!".

Stella is a beautiful girl and my three boys are very happy a new sheepie girl has joined. They are sending sloppy sheepie kisses to her.

Thanks for the welcome. Yes Bella has the "I'm sooo cute that I can get away with it," down pat. We are going to take her to obedience class in the next couple of weeks. She still thinks that “Come” means, “I’m over here and if you would dane to join me I’d be ever so pleased to have your company.” The result is we only practice that command in the back yard or in the house. But, she is getting better. We never cease to be amazed at the difference in temperaments and personalities between Bella and Sydney, our previous OES. Syd was very layback and never jumped on the furniture or the bed. Bella thinks that jumping on the bed is an appropriate way to wake us up or just check if we are a sleep. She also still thinks she fits in my lap at 8 months. The other big difference is that Bella would rather have her belly rubbed and scratched than eat. Syd would take all the head and butt scratching you could give but, touch her belly and she would walk away and lay on her back, please, “I’m much more dignified than that.”
Oh well the joys of puppy hood.
Coming when called????? Are sheepies SUPPOSED to do that????
Welcome to you and Bella. :D

Have fun at your classes - I'm sure they will give you many tips. The main thing is to make it fun. A close second is always be consistant - don't enforce something one time and then let her get away with it another.

Can't wait to hear more about your big baby.
Bella has started digging in the yard. She has tried several differant locations. We usually find out that she is digging when she comes in with a muddy face. Any ideas on how to stop this behavior since we can't seem to catch her at it?

You beat me to it! When I call Tillie, she looks at me like "What? You actually think I do what you want?" Of course, if I have a treat things are different.

Welcome to the forum from another "newbie." Although I have made it past the "shaved" status.[/quote]
