I dropped off Hayley with my Mom and Dad today, I miss her already. I can't have her at the Hospital, so I had to have them watch her. She went to the Beach today. Going to Disney's California Adventure tomorrow and then they will bring her home Thursday after Ryan's surgery. If you could all cross your fingers that this goes well and Ryan has a quick easy recovery, it would be greatly appreciated. For those that don't know... Ryan is mildly Autistic.... so this could be major drama. Tomorrow Ryan and I get to sleep late Today was his last day of school. Then we will probably do something special....just the two of us. He gets to eat whatever he wants tomorrow night because it will be the last solid food he will be having for a few weeks. |

Fingers are crossed- I had all that done at that age too plus windows in my nose ( to help me breath) and tubes in my ears. Get him lots of coloring books and neat in bed games. I went stir crazy after about 2 days. I'm sure he'll be fine. No matter what any child can over come a trying situation with lots of ice cream, soft french fries, and new stuff |
Hope all goes well!
I'd be so mad if I had to have surgery and didn't get to take advantage of missing school for a few days. That's what I told the girl I babysit who just had it done as well since her mom wanted to schedule it on a Friday. I said... Noo... fight for Monday, girl! |

No matter what any child can over come a trying situation with lots of ice cream, soft french fries, and new stuff Thanks Danielle, and Wow, you had a lot done. When Ryan was 5 yrs old he saw a different ENT who was convinced all of Ryan's nasal problems would work themselves out. His Pediatrician had recommended tubes in his ears) He was literally getting ear infection after ear infection. Luckily at 6 yrs old the ears stopped being a problem. But now at 9 yrs old the tonsils have become the problem. I had mine out at 16 yrs old. and I was in a ton of pain. Dr's say it's easier the younger they are. I hope so. I think our main problem is keeping Ryan out of the pool for the next two weeks. Luckily Grandma has said she will take him for a few days to remove him from temptation. He is very excited about getting all the Ice Cream and Italian Ices that he wants. Joahaeyo wrote: Hope all goes well!

Thanks : ) As for school being out, Ryan is sad. He LOVES school. I don't get it, he can't possibly be my son. I am glad the year is over because he has missed a lot of school this year from being sick. (caused by the tonsils) I wouldn't want him to miss anymore. |
Wishing you all, all the best and we are thinking of you all. |
I wish you and Ryan (and your whole family) good luck! |
Elissa,
Saying prayers for your son, you & your family. May God's perfect will be done, and your son recover quickly. God bless. Pam (mouthypf) |
Elissa,
I am sure everything will go fine. My youngest son went through several surgeries with having the tubes put in his ears and he also had his adnoids and tonsils removed. The younger you are it seems the more resillent they are. |
I had mine out when I was 17, and always wished that I had them out earlier. You both will be so much happier after it is over. Here is too hoping that it goes quickly and smoothly. |
Good luck Ryan. And to nurse Mommy too!
We will be thinking of you both. |
Wishing Ryan the best of luck and a speedy recovery |
BIG HUG TO RYAN! I DO UNDERSTAND BEING A TEACHER OF CHILDREN W/ AUTISM.
MY SON & I HAD OUT TONSIL & ADNOIDS OUT TOGETHER. LARRY WAS 7 & I WAS 29. HE WAS OUT PLAYING TWO DAYS LATER WHILE I WAS DYING IN THE HOUSE. TOOK ME 3 WEEKS TO RECOVER. THANK GOODNESS MY MOM COULD STAY W/ ME & 3 CHILDREN. THE KIDS BOUNCE BACK AMAZINGLY FAST. |
He'll feel so much better. My daughter had that same surgery and did very well with it. She stopped snoring, stopped talking through her nose and STOPPED all the ear infections. It was the best thing we could have done for her. You'll both be very pleased with the out come. Best of luck to Ryan and big hugs too. and sloppy sheepie kisses |
Elissa: You and Ryan are in my prayers. Ryan will jump back faster then you think he will. He will feel so much better being able to hear and to speak for himself. I am sure he is going to really enjoy the popcycles. My grandson, Anthony, had his tonsils/adnoids out when he was two and by afternoon was eating pizza. Anyway, E, if there is anything I can do I'm here for you. Take care and make sure you don't get lemon Italian ice because of the acid in the lemons.
It is great your Mom/Dad took Hayley. Hayley gets a little more spoiled and you get an opprotunity to spoil Ryan a little on your own. It will all be over with soon. Take care, big sheepie hugs |
HUGS for Ryan!! I remember when my kids had their tonsils out, they were such pathetic souls!! But they recover quickly. |
Good Luck to Ryan and to you E! |
We're thinking of Ryan! |
Good luck to you and Ryan...tho I think you will need it more than him....kids bounce back really quickly.....
Make sure if you promised him italian ices that he gets it.....my parents promised me ice cream when I got my tonsils out....did I get any...NOOOOO (as you can see the no ice cream was the most traumatic part of the operation) |
I had my tonsils and adenoids out when I was Ryan's age. It really improved my life. I no longer snored, stopped getting sore throats and ear infections, and could hear! I had a sore throat for a few days afterwards then was fine. The 2 worst things were my mom giving me 7-Up after the surgery (burned my throat like he!!) and not being able to go Trick or Treating (had the surgery right before Halloween).
Hugs to Ryan and wishing him a speedy recovery! |
Just catching up on this post. Wishing Ryan a successful surgery and quick recuperation time. And hugs to Mommy Nurse too! |
Elissa and Ryan...we'll be wishing you a fast recovery! This will make Ryan feel so much better in the long run. My daughter (Stefanie, who is now 21) had this when she was 6. When she woke up from the surgery, she slapped me and said, "I WANT MY DADDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Ryan, you will get lots and lots of ice cream!!!! (And presents!) |
I will keep Ryan and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I wish a speedy recovery for him and an easy time for you. |
I'll keep my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for Ryan! |
Good luck Ryan (and mommy!). Be sure to eat some ice cream for me |
Elissa, it's too late now, but the hospitals in our area have a program for kids to come in and look around before their planned surgeries. They walk them through the steps they will be going through, explaining things on their level. It helps them be relaxed and more cooperative - which is easier on everyone.
Our autistic kids at school go through the same type of program, but in much smaller groups. In fact, either one of their teachers or myself will often go with them. It really helps. If you can talk to the staff ahead of time, to let them know what works best with him, that would be wonderful. Good luck and positive thoughts. |
I hope everything goes as smoothly during the operation and recovery as possible, and that Ryan is ready for some summer fun in no time flat! Goodluck!!! |
Best wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery. |
Thanks Everyone |
Good luck Ryan!!! Get ready for all you can eat ice cream! |

I've been warned by the Dr's office already. No Soda for 2 weeks! lol When I had mine out in 1989 they were not allowing any dairy products after the surgery. I was so looking forward to Ice Cream and they would not allow it. But I guess at some point since then they decided that dairy was okay again. I lived off Sorbet for the first couple of weeks. |
I hope everything goes well! Wish him good luck and a speedy recovery for me. |
I seem to recall vanilla ice cream and grape juice.
Yum! |
Tell him I said to milk it for all it's worth! I had my tonsils and adenoids out when I was about 13. My voice changed a lot but until everything healed, I just sounded like Mickey Mouse. Hope everything goes well! |
Best wishes to Ryan for a quick recovery! |
Good luck with Ryan's surgery. I'm sure he'll have a speedy recovery! |
Thanks Everyone
If anyone would like to send e-cards to Ryan it would totally make him happy. He loves getting cards. (Ron, please feel free to remove the link after a day or so) His e-mail address is: RTG@juno.com ButtersStotch wrote: Tell him I said to milk it for all it's worth! LOL, Oh I am sure he will. I remember my voice sounded really weird for the first couple of weeks too. |
On it's way |
Another on it's way! |
We just went through this last Thursday. Good luck to him and ((hugs)) to you! |
E, give ry ry a kiss from me. i had it done at the same age! actually i dont know how my parents did it, but they had all 3 of us kids done at the same time...bam bam bam...one right after the other....i guess she just figured that she would deal with the tantrums all at once
lisa and i were so mad at her, she says that we wouldnt talk to her and just turned away.....guilt=lots of icecream |
Thank you to everyone who has sent cards. He was so happy to get so many. I had told him that he was getting cards and the first thing he wanted to do when we got home was to see them.
The surgery went well. He did freak out a bit in the recovery room because he had an I.V. and the pulse thing was on his toe. He was yelling, crying, hitting me and trying to rip out his I.V. They gave him more Demerol and an anxiety medication and finally calmed down. They kept him for two hrs. Once he had the anxiety meds he was pretty tired and hasn't freaked out since. He is home now and has had another dose of pain meds and his anti-biotic. He is resting on the couch. Thanks again to everyone for all their well wishes, it is much appreciated! You guys are the best!!! |
Elissa...please do me a favor. Give Ryan a little kiss on the forehead for me. Tell him its from his secret "Tante" Deborah! You're a great mom! And he's a terrific kid! |
Yes, plenty of ice cream. I had ear problems until I had mine removed when I was seven; that solved everything. Good luck and you're in my prayers.
Back in those days, they did things a bit differently. I went to the hospital with my folks; the nurse asked me if I'd like to see the place. As we toured the hospital, we eventually arrived at this big room with lots of big lights and equipment. Suddenly someone come up to me from behind and slapped a rag soaked with ether over my nose. The next thing I knew I was recuperating in the hospital room. The doc came in with a jar with my tonsils in it and gave it to me as a souvenier. Later I planted it in the garden. Needless to say I was a bit peeved at my folks for the trick they played on me. |
So glad to hear Ryan is home and on the road to recovery. Bless his heart

Are you serious George! That's crazy! E, I'm glad Ryan made it through pretty well! |
GLAD TO HEAR THE SURGERY WENT WELL FOR HIM E! WISHING RYAN A SPEEDY, AND EASY RECOEVRY! |
Way to go Ryan |
Hi Elissa
I hope ryan is feeling beter give him a big hug from me and gimso wendy and gismo |
I am glad to hear all went well. Kids are notorious for coming out of anesthesia in a wild way.
I had mine out the day after I finished 5th grade, and LeAnne her's out after 3rd grade. Definitely helped both of us. |
How is Ryan doing now Elissa? How are YOU holding up taking care of a recuperating child and a busy toddler? |
Thank you everyone for caring and asking how Ryan is.

Yesterday was hard for him as all the good medication had worn off. He said he felt like his head was going to explode. I assured him it wouldn't. He's drinking quite a bit. He had some Jello, some Ice Cream and some soup. He is drooling a lot. He doesn't want to take his pain medicine, as a matter of fact he hasn't taken it yet today. He does know it makes him feel better he just hates the taste. We had to go out yesterday to get his Goofy stuffed animal that he left at his afterschool program last week. On the way home we stopped from Italian Ices. He was so happy. I'm doing okay, Ryan has been very cuddly and normally he never wants to cuddle or even be touched so I have been taking advantage of it. Hayley has been with my parents since two days before the surgery so I haven't had to deal with 2 of them. She is coming home today. I cant wait. I miss her so much. Ryan is going to go home with my parents today, we are trading kids. We are removing him from temptation. He is not supposed to go swimming and with the pool in our backyard it is very tempting. When Hayley comes back he's gonna want to play and run around with her. He also wants to be with his "Sweetheart", Grandma. He always wants to be with her when he is sick. She is the first person he asked for when he woke up from surgery, then he asked about Billy. So he will be going o Grandma and Grandpa's house for a few days. I think he is going to be upset about Hayley. He misses her a lot and I know he wants to play with her. The first day she was at Grandma's he asked if I could drive him there to play with her. But being with Grandma he'll get over it quickly. I have a lot to do next week and don't want to be dragging my sick son everywhere. He needs his rest. |
Ahh E Ryan will get extra cuddles from Grandma and Grandpa which will make everything all right. That is what Grandparents are for.......
I am so happy he is doing better. Please tell him I understand the drool problem. (hence shingles) Just tell him to keep a napkin in his pocket lol. Give him a big sheepie/aussie hug and one for Hayley too. |

Sounds like my experience! They put me into a giant playpen they called a bed, turned out the lights and left me alone.......what?? I screamed for hours. Next morning they promised me ice cream when I woke up? What? I just woke up, where's my ice cream? Next the trip into the room with the lights, some strange guy putting something stinky over my face and telling me to count.......I screamed. Next thing I'm in a strange room, with a strange lady. When I woke again I demanded my ice cream....they brought me oatmeal....it was breakfast time. Oatmeal? Hurt like sin going down, but screaming was worse. I whimpered until parents came to take me home. |
Here he is right after his surgery...... well after the anti-anxiety medication. He was trying to smile.
|
Poor guy. When your a kid and laid up it seems like an eternity! |
Ryan looks wiped out, but actually doesn't look that bad for someone who just had surgery!
I bet he will have a good time with grandma and grandpa. Thank goodness you have that option! |
It's amazing how good you feel with Demerol.
He definitely has looked worse since then. lol He is actually looking very pathetic and helpless today. |
give my ry-ry kisses.......and tell him my ponytail is really long now!! hehehe |
We need a tonsilupdateomy! |
Sorry I didn't see the original post but glad you are both recovering |
Elissa tell Ryan he is a big brave boy and he looks adorable in the photo, a very handsome young man. So glad all the surgery went well and hopefully he is on the mend and everything is working as it should be.
Hugs to yourself as I know how stressfull it can be for a mommy and hugs to big brave ryan also. |
Ryan is nothing more than a drooling mess right now.
He is refusing to take his pain meds. He just started talking again yesterday, but because he has so much phlegm you can barely understand him. He is with my parents until Friday. He must be feeling really crappy since Grandpa took him to one of his favorite places, Chuck E. Cheese and Ryan wanted to leave after a few minutes. I usually have to carry him out kicking and screaming. |
Oh poor Ryan. Please tell him it is almost over and he will start feeling good soon. Sheepie/Aussie kisses to him from Violet and China.
Hang in there E...... |
I hope Ryan is doing better. Both my girls has this surgury and recovery was hard and took 2 weeks but since than both have been much better. Hope you both hang in there. My girls did not want to take their meds either and I ended up trying to trick them by sticking it in yogurt, ice cream, or what ever.
Becky |
Thanks all!
Ryan is finally talking again and even eating a little. He is still not taking the meds for Grandma and Grandpa, but he will be back home this evening and if he thinks he's going to get away with that here, he is mistaken. I want to thank everyone who sent cards. They really made him so happy. He was actually so happy about the cards he decided to send himself some get well soon cards. He's so funny! |
Thank you so much for the update on Ryan Elissa. We do worry about him. Yes, away from Grandma/Grandpa and back to reality. lol I hope he gets better soon. You take care also..... |
That so good to hear he's doing better!! I love the part about him sending himself get well cards, lol. I had a co-worker who used to send herself flowers (although when a grow-up does it, it's kinda sad). |
We need another tonsilupdateomy!
How's the big boy doing? |
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about all you guys have been through! |
Hi Elissa,
It's tough when you are taking care of a sick child and even worse when you kinda feel helpless when they are going through pain. Hope Ryan is on the road to recovery and tell him his auntie M is sending lots of well wishes and love. Hugs to you as well! PS can you pm me your snail mail as I want to send Ryan a card. Marianne and the boys |
Thanks for asking Ron.
He is doing much better. No more drooling and he is speaking more clearly, still on the nasally side. He is now almost back to eating normal, though he did say his ears still hurt him when he eats. We see the Dr tomorrow for his follow up visit. I will update again tomorrow. |
Dr said Ryan is healing great!
He can resume normal activity immediately. He also said the pain in his ear is normal and will go away in time. |
Great news E......I'm glad to hear your are doing great Ryan! |
Wonderful wonderful news Elissa, so glad Ryan is on the mend after all the surgery. Hugs to both of you, you need it as his special nurse.
Pass onto Ryan that I think he is a very brave and good boy. |
