Habit - gnawing on his own legs

Winston has ALWAYS gnawed on his front legs, for no apparent reason. When you say his name, click your tongue, whistle, whatever - he stops. He has what looks like muddy knees all the time! It's just a habit, there is and never has been a skin irritation, he's never had fleas, he doesn't have allergies - he just gnaws. He doesn't pull the hair out, just gets it completely brown (think like their beard...only on his legs!)

I can't imagine there's some magic cure-all for it. I tried the bitter apple sprays when he was younger. It didn't make a difference, so I just gave up. Anybody else's baby have this quirk?

Could there be a hurt? MO will lick at her carpus due to the arthritis in the joint. Could there have been a hurt at one time and he's just stuck on chewing?

Could be he bored? Sometimes these obsessive behaviors can be traced back to an emotional concern. He needs a hobby.....other than chewing on his leg.

How about a big femur bone to chew on instead of his leg? Will he substitute leg bones?

curious
It could be a compulsive behavior if it's been going on a long time. I've got a Border Collie-mix that I believe finds it soothing. But this habit can cause a skin problem like lick granulomas or injury.

Here's link on compulsive licking... WARNING!... there's a bad ouchie pictured but it explains the problem.

Yeah...it's compulsive alright. Fortunately in all his years of doing it he's never caused himself harm.

Also, yes he'll substitue a bone for it for a while, but he can't have too much of that either - he's got an uber-sensitive tummy. (Speaking of which, I haven't dug around here enough to see if others experience that problem too. )
Barney does the same thing to his front paws. He'll just lick and lick or gnaw and gnaw. His paws are brown/reddish. We tried the bitter apple and it just made him give us a dirty look as he got up and moved and started licking again.

He'd tried benedryl (for potential allergies) and didn't really work.

About a month ago we took him to the vet for something else and they gave him a cortisone shot...it was a miracle. He COMPLETELY stopped licking his paws...so it turns out it WAS allergies. Now he's starting to do it again a little, but not as badly, so I'm thinking that once in a while we'll have to give him another shot. Oh, and his paws are back to being white (well, white enough for a sheepie!)
