I'd be more concerned about the quality of the puppy and where he is coming from before you give any money. Go out there and look at the environment. Don't pick a pup just because he's close by and available. Too many people do that but getting a quality pup from a reputable breeder will save you so many headaches and heartaches down the line. I'm not trying to lecture or yell at you, I just want you to make a good decision.
Ultimately, this is my take on the money order: he deals with a lot of people who can't really afford puppies and he's probably selling them cheaper than a good breeder would so that's the crowd he attracts. He wants money orders because he's had people bounce checks to him and/or he doesn't want to have to declare it as income. |
I'd be very cautious...lots of internet scams involve having you send a money order, and then vanishing. If you are able to actually meet them in person, and get the pup at the same time as you hand over the money order, I suppose you'd be ok...but still....be careful! |
Well I asked him if he had any references, anyone I could contact that had one of his puppies, and he said that I can come out and look around and see everything or I could just meet him someone and get the dog, I would pay when I say him, and he isn't selling it cheap it is $750, about what I've seen most other sheepies go for in my area... or am I wrong?? |

I don't know about Oklahoma but I think that's about half of what I would expect to get a quality dog for. I'm not sure that I understand what you're saying. Did he have references? |
He said that he did but he then he just kept talking about other things, and never gave me any information... I think I should just probably forget about it since I have some doubts... |
Ultimately, that's your best test. If something feels weird to you, you're probably right. Have you tried the OES breeder referral? Her name is Tarja T. Koistila. She is a member here at the forum and is the chairperson of the Breeder Referral program Old English Sheepdog Club of America (OESCA). She will be able to refer you to a breeder in your area who has, at a minimum, signed the OESCA Code of Ethics. I am sure she will be happy to assist you!! You will STILL need to do your homework and ask lots of questions of those breeders.
You can contact Tarja through the forum, one of two ways: Through email here at the forum: http://forum.oes.org/profile.php?mode=email&u=498 Or through a Private Message (PM) here at the forum: http://forum.oes.org/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=498 |
I echo what has been said above. In order to promote quality, healthy OES in the future you can never be too cautious about where you purchase your puppy. Check out the above links and hopefully you'll find a breeder without the premonition. |

If he is not grilling you, getting a reference on YOU, doing a home visit and a vet reference, then he doesn't care where the dog is going. He is not a reputable breeder who cares about his pups, so not someone I would ever want to support. The money order is no biggy, though. |
