I have never had to worry about this stuff before as all previous dogs were short to meduim coated dogs. Bell is my first proper long haired dog. And I was wondering with a coat like theirs if something like that would be nessecary. |

I don't give any supplements for coat. |
I use linatone (I think a Tablespoon) every day (found at petco - has OES on it). Yuki practically does cartwheels for the stuff. If we're going on a trip and we want her to pee, we place it in her water and no matter how much water is in the bowl.......... she sucks it all up. I think it works well too! The second she seems a little dry, using this make it go away. |
I give Dixie Missing Link. Last year she had a tough year, and was slowly getting her health in order...But once she was put on this it was amazing....Took a couple of weeks to see a difference, but boy oh boy.
Good kibble is crucial to a healthy body, but I am not convinced that any kibble has everything in it, and is the best one. Go down to the ingredients, and they explain what they are, what part is used, and what the benefits are. All is good. http://www.designinghealth.com/products ... _main.html I know a woman who rescued a senior dog from a kill-shelter. His coat was thin and dry, and he was almost dead. After a few months he came around, with good food and the good life, but always had an ugly coat. Then he was put on this and his coat grew in nice and thick and shiny. I saw him months later and could not believe it was the same dog. |
I 2nd nicoles advice on Missing Link, amazing product and only full of all things good for the whole system including skin and coat.
It is expensive here in OZ to get but well worth it. Another supplement I use if not adding missing link for the whole system, just for coat and skin is an omega oil. Cold pressed Flax seed oil, about 1tsp over there dinner to help the coat & skin. If you go for missing link then nothing else needs to be added to there diet. And of course always feed a top quality dry food, you pay for what you get. |
i was wondering about the omega oils.. i was tempted to pick some up but didnt..now i wish i had.. i will also check out that Missing Link .. Bell is still in her puppy coat but you can see the ear that is dark starting to turn grey... so i want to make sure she gets all the essential stuff that she needs.
thanks all =) |
Nicole - is that Missing Link in powder form? I found it on
petedge and it gave the dosage in teaspoons, so I am guessing it's a powder. The discription wasn't very clear, just a basic ingredients type thing. Also, there is one called Missing Link plus with Glucosamine. Otherwise it looks like the same thing. I was just wondering which you'd used. I think I might try this, although it is a bit pricey, I don't how far a pound of it will go. Usually the good stuff (read expensive) seems to be gone in no time. It's not that my guys aren't worth it, but it is something I'm not familiar with. If you and Lisa say it's good, I'll trust you. Shellie |
Shellie it is good stuff and it is in powder form, either one is good, with or without glucosamine. |
I have not used Missing Link, but I have friends who have and swear by it.
I supplement the dry food with yogurt and fish oil (omega 3) for all the dogs; Simon and Chewie get glucosamine/chondroitin supplement. (Chewie because he is growing, Simon because he is a senior basset and still doing rally). |
I also use Missing Link, but can't tell if it makes a difference. I got it while it was on sale on amazon through oes.org |

I only give it to Dixie, as she needs it. A small bag lasts me about 2 1/2 months, because it goes very far. I also give her a great kibble, so don't give her the total dose. About 1 tablespoon once a day. If your dog already looks and appears healthy, you may not see a difference. With Dixie it was amazing, as she was such bad shape to begin with. I did try to wean her off it, and she started getting itching, sore ears and dry skin again, so we put her right back on. Good preventative for us, so worth the $20 or so a bag. |
I just ordered Dream Coat by Halo products.
Will let you know how we like it. The book The Whole Pet Diet by Andi Brown is excellent. She is the founder of Halo pet products. It gives great suggestions on a home cooked diet and explains the different supplement formulas. www.halopet.com |
