Barney went to the dog park

Barney went to the dog park this weekend (twice, actually!) and he had a great time. I was a little nervous about having him around other dogs since he was kicked out of his daycare, but I had nothing to worry about. He was great with the other dogs and 9 out of 10 times was perfectly friendly at the water bucket.

The only bad part of the visit was on the second day. There is a shady section where we were sitting the day before and Barney went over there to check it out. There was a pit bull over there with her owners. They started off fine...Both were play bowing and kind of chasing each other. But then it all changed in a second. I'm not sure if this is what made her do it, but it was Barney's turn to chase her and she made a sudden move and knocked her head on a picnic table bench (like really hard, I heard the clunk) and right after that she wasn't in a playing mood anymore and she just started snapping at Barney and chasing him, but not in a nice way--trying to clamp on to him.

The owners (of course) said she had never displayed any sort of aggressive behavior before, to humans or to other dogs), but it was also their first trip to the dog park. The owner was apologetic and they left pretty much right away.

No one got hurt, and I don't think Barney really even realized what was going on, but it was scary--I was trying to think how I could tear the pit bull off my dog if it came to that...

poor barney! maybe she was just grumpy after hitting her head....???? Whats Pandas boyfriend doing with a big she-dog like that anyway???
We had a very similar experience at the park like that. Clyde and Bear were chasing a GSD around and everyone was having a great time-- they'd played well before and an equally good time. We have all these fake fire hydrants (real but not working) around and as the boys chased the GSD, he turned around to see how close they were behind him and rammed into the fire hydrant. He went down hard, turned around to see Bear and came up snarling. Although Bear didn't do anything, the GSD associated the pain with something Bear did as it was the first face he saw after the hit. We've seen the dog since and now that dog immediately goes after Bear. His owner is a super nice guy and we always take turns being the ones to leave since they can't be in close proximity anymore. It sucks but it definitely happens.
