Another food question? Merrick or Wellness

Ok, I have only done a little research! So I am being lazy, want your expert opinions! And I know everyone has one! I am thinking of changing Allie to Merrick or Wellness. Wellness seems to be easier to get around here but I can get Merrick at the feed store up-north. Which one has less filler? (Meal) or are they about the same?

I like Merrick. The boys have eaten the the dry and done well but I changed them because I didn't like the size of the kibble. I also like that Merrick makes their own food and none of their raw materials come from China or bargain basement countries. I also feed Lucy Merrick canned right now and she does better on this food than she's done on any other canned in her life. Overall, it's a high quality food from a reputable company. That's my 2 cents!

Also, if you do decide on Merrick, a lot of Pet Supplies Plus franchises have begun carrying it now, too. All the ones by me are getting it now which makes it much easier.
Meal is not a filler, if you mean chicken meal, etc... it is simply the chicken (or whatever) with the water removed. Instead of the bag saying it's first ingredient is chicken, if it is chicken meal it is a higher quality, more concentrated product. (instead of the actual weight of chicken as an ingredient being around 80% water)
Oh, so the Nutro I feed, does not contain filler? I am confused! Always thought that was a good food, then my sister said the feed store told her it has filler, go with the Merrick, which does not.....

Which Nutro are you feeding? The Nutro Ultra is an excellent food but the other ones aren't as great-- not bad, just not great. If your dog is going good on what you're feeding her now, don't change just because someone at a feed store said one has filler, which I'm assuming she meant corn? Every dog is different so there's no one perfect food. I wouldn't stress about it if you like what you feed. If she's healthy, a good weight and, overall doing well, you're doing just fine!
As I've mentioned before but hasn't really been discussed yet, "Meal" has lots of stuff in it you wouldn't feed to your dog if it wasn't shredded and dehydrated and ground into meal.

The word "meal" itself doesn't mean something like "dinner" or "lunch" it means something that has been ground up to varying degrees. It can be ground as fine as a powder. Jewish cooks use "Matzo Meal" for making Matzo Balls for their soup, and use it instead of flour for baking during Passover. Think of it to mean something like "flour" without the grain connotation.

By-products are things you wouldn't want to see eaten by a wild animal on a Nature show.

None of it is what you or I would consider to be "Human Grade Food", a label which has no meaning on a label. It means something to me, but not to the FDA

MEAL:
Quote:
"meat meal" is "the rendered product from mammal tissues, exclusive of any added blood, hair, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents." Thus, in addition to the processing, it could also contain parts of animals one would not think of as "meat." Meat meal may not be very pleasing to think about eating yourself, even though it's probably more nutritious. Animals do not share in people's aesthetic concerns about the source and composition of their food. Regardless, the distinction must be made in the ingredient list (and in the product name). For this reason, a product containing "lamb meal" cannot be named a "Lamb Dinner."

Notice that bone and tendon and internal organs (other than stomach) aren't included in the exceptions? Yum. I wonder what else isn't excluded?

BY-PRODUCTS
Quote:
Some people prefer to pass up animal by-products, which are proteins that have not been heat processed (unrendered) and may contain heads, feet, viscera and other animal parts not particularly appetizing.

You name it, it's a by-product. Yum.

I prefer not to think about this aspect of the food I feed to my dog.
Well like I have said, I have not done much research, went with Nutro when she was a pup and she is doing good on it. I but the Nutro small bites, then add a small bag of Nutro Ultra to it! A little variety and I have been doing that for almost a year. So I think that is what I will stick with! Thanks guys!
I've been researching foods since back in Feb before the recall when my then three month old pup came down with a "mysterious" illness...I always suspected the food simply from researching what goes into commercial pet food...and you may not want to know what is in most!

Anyway, Merrick is a food I would trust. They are a family owned company, do not outsource their manufacturing and use USA ingredients. They are not on the recall list. I would stay away from any BRAND that was recalled - not just the variety that was recalled. But that is my opinion.

Wellness is good and I actually did start to feed my pup on that and he was doing well with it. But the recalls just kept coming in and it was a different company every day and I felt like I was a "sitting duck" waiting for the next recall of sme big company.... Wellness, aka Mother Hubbard Pet, does outsource their manufacturing, do use some ingredients from sources other than the USA and do use Menu Foods to make some of the products - so I stopped I changed foods... None of the Wellness products were ever recalled.

Ron, I am curious what you feed? You can privately e mail me if you don't want to "pump" one brand over another :)

And I have to say I find it amazing that people are not researching the food (and the companies) they are feeding to the pets they love...especially after this recall event....there is so much information on all these companies all over their sites and all over the internet from reputable sources...you just have to read it...isn't it worth it? Here are a few sites where you will find a wealth of reliable information:
