potty troubles

Our Teddy has been with us since Saturday. We have to take him on a very long walk before he will go potty or anything else. We walk him in the morning and evening but this does nothing for the time in between. We take him outside to go and he just won't go, most of the time. He will however go right by the hearth inside. Last night we took him out several times and he went just a few minutes after we came inside. We tried to get him outside quickly but he didn't go anymore. How can we help him learn not to do this and to go outside without needing to go on a long walk first?

Rescue dogs all come with baggage of some kind, perhaps Teddy was never housebroken? Has he been neutered?

Now that he's marked his territory on your hearth he's claimed it as his place to pee. You might try wiping it up with a paper towel or small cloth and staking that outside where you want him to potty. Hopefully, he'll get the idea. Then use an enzyme cleaner to thoroughly clean up the hearth so he'll be less likely to go there again. :sidestep:
Do you know Teddy's history? My brother adopted a Bouv mix that was a court ordered take away due to neglect. He had spent the first few years of his life tied up outside and therefore didn't like "going in front of an audience". I know it sounds weird but it is true! He was VERY reluctant to "do his business" on a leash. If he could go out on his own in the backyard he'd be done in a flash. Just a thought.....
