The times that I am concerned about, are when, for one reason or another, we cant be right there with them, and need to make sure they are sheltered from excessive sun, rain, etc....and cant follow us (neither one has the slightest inclination to run off, but they do want to be where we are ) I had been considering collapsible crates, or even one of those pop-up beach shelters, but ButtersScotch's comment in another thread, that one of her dogs went RIGHT THROUGH one of those, has me a bit hesitant! Any suggestions? |

Are you worried about predators? If not, a tie-out might work, perhaps in combination with a beach shelter. |
I had a frustrated rescue basset in my nylon crate for a transport. We went from Milwaukee to MN -a 7 hr drive- and the crate held up just fine.
I think if you get them both used to the crates before hand, and they respect the crates, they would be the easiest way to go. Another thought is the tent-like sunshelters, with folding metal crates inside it. |
No suggestions but just wanted to say that Yuki is afraid of the collapsible hard crates. I think she doesn't like the way the bottom feels. It was different than a normal smooth inside of her normal dog crate. We definitely need to get something though, so I always listen closely to these threads. |
Chewie loves both the metal one with the tray bottom, and his plastic crate. The plastic one is on the porch, and it is cooler out there, so he gets that one for daily use. He likes that location better. So Maggie the coonhound got the wire one when she came to us.
Chewie still uses the wire one for shows - Maggie gets booted to the porch one! Chewie does go in the wire one and lays/sniffs it at least once daily. Like he's seeing what Maggie is doing with "his" crate. |

Any suggestions? Actually, Bear blasted through a regular WIRE crate at the groomer. He really had some places to be, I guess. |

Bert is ok with crates...he was crate-trained as a puppy...but Abby HATES them
We are currently looking at a collapsible "ATV garage" (6'x9') and I'm hoping that it will do the trick. It folds down quite flat, and is roomy enough for both of their dog-beds and a chair for relaxing 2 legs. My only concern with it is wind (see my post about last week's craft-fair wind storm ) But sandbags or cement blocks SHOULD fix that. Any other ideas still welcome....this has been an ongoing dilemma for us for some time, now. |
Bingley does well in both kinds of crates, but I wouldn't have bought one without being able to "test-drive" first. They can easily paw through the mesh if they want to badly enough - his sister has done it!!! |
What about a puppy pen and just mats in them to snooze on. They consatina up and are easy to transport and unfold to form a pen around them.
You can buy them in varying sizes & heights to help contain them and plenty of room for them to spread out and snooze & they can be init together then instead of seperate crates. The bottom of them if you are outside, you can put tent pegs to anchor them to the ground to stop them moving the sides if they rub up against them. You can then put up a beach umbrella to shade them from the sun or a pop up waterproof beach shelter. They then have more room in them then just in a wire crate. You can just unfold it and set it up too for an indoor venue as well. The soft crates are a bit uncertain I have seen dogs at shows go through the sides of them, that is what put me off them as there not a secure containment system if you have to disappear for awhile. |
I second Lisa's idea for this a solution for mobile & temporary confinement.
They call them "Ex" pens here in the US, short for Exercise Pens. "Exercise" in dog show lingo means "bathroom". They are metal obviously so they are not as light weight as mesh. I have seen people partially cover the top with a blanket or towels to keep sun out if needed. Here are some links to see what they are: http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx? ... yID=13743& http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx? ... yID=13904& |
We did wind up getting the "ATV garage"...So far, so good! I put a tie-out inside it just to be safe, but Bert seems happy to just stretch out and nap when I put him in it at the fairs.
Here it is from the outside (normally it would be behind our booth, but our neighbor failed to show up last week, so we put it next to it instead) Bert, greeting a new friend Here's a better view of our whole set up |
Isn't her booth lovely? |
I'm with bert the accomodation at these fairs is GREAT all snuggly and comfortable to stretch out for a lazy day and snooze. Great shelter, on my way to Alaska with my sleeping bag. Hope bert does not mind sharing
Love your stand and love your art work. |
That looks real nice. I bet Bert had a blast!
How nice of the neighbors not to show up. |
Your booth is so nice! You've arranged everything so nicely. I wish I could come see it in person
And Bert's home looks pretty nice too! |
