For all of you from countries who only have tails to look forward to in your future, do you think that the grooming will be adjusted to better incorporate the tail while still maintaining the topline and rise of the dog? Or do you think it will continue as is and we'll just get used to looking at it looking weird? |

Dang, I missed it. I did catch the utility and toy group, but missed the beginning. Now I really wish I would have seen the OES! |
I've seen some groomed for show with a tail that is like you described, just doesn't look attached or where it's suppsed to be, but I have also seen some who look fantastic. The tail is not as noticeable if it is equally fluffed up, as long as it stays down LOL (only in pics though, I've never seen an oes with a tail in RL)
I think eventually they'll just get used to it... not sure if we will though LOL |
Examples... (these pics are Tove's)

I think the problem is more in the movement. Lying flat in line with the body looks fine but when it's sticking out and swaying, that's when it starts looking like someone else's tail. |
George has a tail, and although he is only a puppy at the moment it is already really fluffy (when we first got him it was like a rats tail!!).
When it is all groomed out it goes more fluffy and so currently looks ok with his coat. However when he is out playing he carries his tail really high and so it does look funnny. These pictures were taken a while ago and his tail is a bit fluffier now. Over time I think it is something that everyone will just have to get used to!! He's my first OES and I don't really think about him having a tail except when when he clears a table or shelf with it!! Still nothing like the sound of the happy thumping on the floor!! Love it!! |
George looks so cute with his tail |
I don't think there's a big deal with the dog having a tail, just the show grooming that goes with it. I think the everyday look with the tail looks much better! |
I think in time the grooming will have to be altered accordingly!
I suppose at the moment it's new so noone has really thought about it much. They need to be back combed to be fuller!! |
I've wondered that, too! I think it looks normal when the dog is stacked but as soon as they begin to move the grooming job looks silly - however awesome it is! I think I'll just get used to it as I see more of it. If we showed overseas I probably wouldn't even give it a second thought! |
You get use to it, I was taken aback with it at first, I remember seeing a specialty video back in 1998 from O/S all the sheepies had tails and when they moved I thought OMG.
Now hardly notice it, youngsters here with tails and now no big deal as you see more and more of them with that hairy tail, you get use to it, in fact you seem to ignore the tail altogether, judges from around the world are told still to ignore the tails on traditionally docked breeds to this day, when judging. Grooming is altering too, to incorporate the tail and the big hairy boofy butt for the showring. Tail training too, teaching the dog to keep the tail down between the legs when on the stack just like you teach the dog where to place it's feet on the stack. Just seeing for the first time a sheepie on the move in the showring with a tail is different, it does not alter them in any way if they have a good topline they still do, if they have a good slope of croup they still do with or without a tail. Movement is still the same. Tail is set low if correct topline and slope of croup then the tail sort of comes out from there and slightly up with a slight curl up at the end. Never carried high in a curl over the back (gay tail) if the dog is correct in its structure. |

How is the grooming being altered? It would probably look better, or more put-together if there wasn't the big, pooffy butt, no? It that what they are working towards? |
