9 months is a great age to get a new dog. We did the same with a Bouv years ago. Just as with an 8 week old puppy, start the training early. Most likely your pup is already house-trained. But make sure now to set the house rules. Stay consistent. Lots of love and introductions to the house/neighborhood. Investigate new places, sounds smellls along the way.
Start the groomong process now as well. The unfortunate part about the age of your pup is you are either going through or about to go through the coat change (unless he or she has already been shaved down). But getting a handle on how to groom, getting him/her use to the cutting of their nails and cleaning ears is essential. And buy a towel to clean off wet beards and puddled floors! |
LOL! Yes, I've been instructed on the grooming!!!!
He isn't housebroken yet...I guess he's sort of like a rescue...old owners didn't pay him a lot of attention. They kept him in a kennel outside all day and then put him in a crate a night. (Which I think is wicked cruel). I'm going to let him settle a bit and get used to everything. I have two pugs already- Sirius Black and Tank (who's a rescue). I've contacted a trainer to work with me on basic obedience and I look forward to all the new experiences. I wanted a dog who I could take out to the stables with me and hopefully this will work out. I've named him "Churchill". Wish me luck! |
Good Luck! I don't think your pugs know what's in store!
Our Bouv came from a breeder so she was well on her way to being properly trained (show career never materialized). Sounds like Churchill is coming in with no real training, so I think you are at step one on the training. These guys are love-bugs, but you have to be firm with them. They can get stubborn, or catch a case of the selective hearing-itis. You can read a lot about recommended trainng methods on this board. But there is no "one shoe fits all" training method for our OES. All some need are love and some treats. Others need a firm, corrective approach. Find what works for you and Churchill and he'll be acting presidential before you know it. |
Thank you for your words of advice and encouragement! I appreciate it and I'm sure Churchill will too! |
Thanks for giving Churchill a chance at a better life! I am wishing you lots of luck! I agree with El Gato that you need to figure out which approach works best for you and your dog. I am a huge fan of My Smart Puppy by Sarah Wilson and Brian Kilcommons. The training exercises are great for puppies of all ages. |
Hey there! I'll leave the training advice to the experts here, but I just wanted to say congratulations on the new furchild and thanks for saving him from what sounds like a bad situation. Also, we have a sheepdog and a pug, and they get along so well! They play rough, but they have a great time and they let each other know when enough is enough. Good luck with Churchill! |
Cannot stress enough that a 9 month old OES is a puppy, with a puppy's energy, a puppy's enthusiasm, a puppy's absolute lack of common sense. Be patient. They don't grow up until they are 2-3 years old.
Also, teach Churchill to walk on a lead and walk him as long as you can, every day. An OES with lots of pent up energy will find something to do with all of that energy. You will likely not be pleased. Basic obedience is an excellent place to start. That said, OES are absolutely wonderful bundles of love and fluff and affection. They are extremely loyal and very smart, albeit with minds of their own. |
Hi and welcome , sheepies are wondeful, loving dogs and some sure are stuborn |

Still waiting at 3.5 years old |
Congrats on your new puppy.
We adopted Pepsi when he was approx 10 months old. I brought him out every hour and and half and he picked up on the house breaking very quickly. It does help when you have other dogs too. Best wishes to you and Churchill and WELCOME. |
Hi, welcome and congrat's. The best thing about getting a 9 month old sheepie is you still have a couple of years of puppy left |
Congrats! Welcome from a fellow New Englander! I haven't part of this group for long, but you'll find there are a lot of experienced people here with the best advice. Have a great time with the pup! My best advice is get a puppy cut for our humid summer! |
