More Lucy Problems

Well, not exactly more problems, just the same ones but a lot worse. Today I had a doctor's appointment and came home early this afternoon. Lucy was lying by the water bowl by the back door. I went over to her to wake her up. She was a bit startled (she's mostly deaf so it's hard not to scare her) but was able to get up and stumbled out the door. I put some things away and the boys had been out and back in already so I stuck my head out to see where she was. I found her sitting in the grass. It doesn't sound like a big deal but Lucy does not sit like that-- ever. I went over to her and figured she could use a back end boost so I helped her up and ambled off to the corner of the yard.

I watched her for a second and then started to turn to go back in the house when she just went down. I ran over to try to boost her up again but she couldn't even hold herself up. Her front paws were shaking and buckling and her back legs were just useless. I tried a couple of times to get her up but it only seemed to make her upset. She was shaking and drooling and it looked like she was having a seizure. Finally, I hoisted her up and ran her right to the car and to the vet.

I carried her in and they had a room waiting. Luckily, she was so excited, adrenalin really helped her and she was now able to stand, albeit really shakily. It was heartbreaking. On the positive side, the vet determined that it wasn't neurological and she wasn't seizing. But, her arthritis is really bad-- more severe than previously thought. So, now she's on a cocktail of Deramaxx and Tramadol and the vet hopes that we'll see some improvement. I was actually in tears today. It was so upsetting to see her like that.

I am so sorry Jill. Hugs to you and Lucy. Hopefully the meds will work and bring sweet Lucy some relief. :ghug:
I'm so sorry... that must have been so difficult to see :(

I hope the meds help her feel more comfortable and able to move around more again...
i'm sorry to hear about Lucy. It's hard seeing them like that.
Oh no! Poor Lucy! It is awful to see our pets suffering. I am so sorry that you and she are going through this. I hope the meds help. Chum did great on Tramadol but it can make some dogs act weird so if it seems like she is hallucinating, maybe try something else (metacam is a great alternative).

I hope she feels better soon. :hearts:
Oh I'm so sorry for Lucy, glad you gone straight to the vet! Hope the medicine helps Lucy getting better!! :hearts:

Loads of Sheepie Hugs to you and Lucy!! :ghug:
:ghug: To you and Lucy.

I hope she is feeling better.
Jill, give Lucy a big kiss from me...I hope the new meds make her feel more comfortable..you holding up okay?
Hugs and kisses to you!
:( Poor lucy! :(

Poor Jill...
Poor Lucy :(
Jil I am so sorry to hear about Lucy, I hope the meds kick in and make her more comfortable and help with her mobility.

Sucks when they do get old, really hard and yes tears flow when they have set backs.

We are going through the same thing, I will be lucky to have Kelsey get through this winter she is not great either with her elderly problems too.

Have you thought about the lift harness something like val used for chum. I think they are a wonderful thing to help there when they are having problems getting up. You can use them too to support her when she is wobbly on her legs. When you do have to help her up and she is wobbly I found rubbing/massaging down the back legs before letting them totter off helps there as it sort of warms the muscles aids getting them mobile.

Hugs to you both :(
Jill,

Sorry to hear about Lucy. I truly hope the medication helps ease her problems. :ghug:

Currently, I'm using a towel as my harness. Lucy wants to get up by herself and she really gives it her all before she'll let me help. Today she really just let herself fall in my arms though, it was so sad. I think, now that I know this is going to be a problem, I'll have to get something a little more permanent than a towel. We've been massaging her a lot to try to soothe her so I'll continue to do that. I hadn't thought about it warming up the muscles-- good thinking!

Val, I feel like you posted the harness you used in my other Lucy thread. I'm going to look for it but, if you didn't, can you link me again? I'd rather get one that someone liked and used than hope for the best.
I tried a number of different harnesses and Chum and I liked the Outward Hound Up n Out Lift Harness the best because I could just keep it on her with the velcro and only use the handles when she needed help and Chum never seems to mind wearing it. With other slings or a towel, I always had to first figure out how to get it under Chum when Chum needed to get up. I tried another "always on" version from a popular handicapped pets website, but Chum just hated wearing it.

I hope Lucy likes it.
Val,

Does this stay on all the time? She doesn't pee on it or anything? This looks pretty good.
I would keep it on Chum for days at a time and it never got peed on. It doesn't exactly stay in place -- it slides -- but mostly it stayed around her belly and the handles were always easy to grasp and didn't trip her up when she was walking.

It is similar to the one at petsmart, but that one doesn't haven't velcro to stay on so I'd always have to wonder where I left it last.

The one from handicapped pets went around her legs and seemed likely to be peed on. Plus the handles were too long and would trip her up when she was walking. Chum hated it.
I used a similar harness/reverse saddle for Merlin when he wasn't able to get around reliably on his own any more. His came from doggonewheels. Washable, velcro. We also purchased a wheelchair for him, which helped for a little while, but Merlin was getting old and tired, and eventually, that became more than we felt we had a right to ask.

Merlin became incontinent so we had 2--one to wear, one to wash. He wore his most of the time, but we did near the end, take it off of him whenever we could, or whenever we thought he'd be sleeping for a while. We used the flannel covered waterproof pads you get for a baby mattress to cover his sleeping area. He never would accept dog beds, not even at the end, when we got an orthopedic one.

The saddle saved our backs and gave Merlin some good months before he died.
I'm so sorry for Lucy's problems and hope she will be ok
Jill, I'm so sorry to hear about Lucy. I've been through that before with one of my collies. One feels so helpless when you see them suffer. Will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.
I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again. You guys are so great. Thanks for letting me vent and sharing your well wishes and advice. It's really amazing how much it makes me feel better. :ghug:
Oh, Jill! You did have the day from hell. Glad you're keeping us posted on Lucy and hope the meds straighten her up.

Not to scare you but we had similar problems with Maggie before we finally let her go last summer. She actually was having seizures in addition to the inability to get up and move around easily. We almost bought a sling harness but she lost so much weight it was pretty easy to just carry her up and down stairs when necessary.

Here's hoping Lucy's up and around soon and she has several good years left with you, James and the boys.

:ghug:

Another positive, Lucy's appetite is better than ever. She's eating and drinking great and is alert and all there otherwise. The vet said she thinks that all the shaking and drooling earlier was from the pain and straining so hard to move. I'll tell you, it's amazing how heavy 55 pounds is when you're trying to move it around in a furry, squishy package. Thank goodness she wasn't resisting or it would've been a lot worse.
I keep coming back to this thread, Jill...Holding my breath, and sending good vibes to you, James and Lucy..

She is such a beautiful girl....I know you will take good care of her....You are so thoughtful, being so careful about what SHE needs and what is best for her, and her comfort.

Hugs....
Jill,
I am so sorry to hear about Lucy. I hope the Tramadol works well for her.
Big hugs to you and Lucy. :ghug:

That's great!! I think appetite is a strong indicator of general well-being.

Aww poor baby! I hope the drugs help keep her mobile. Extra gentle hugs for Lucy!!
Oh Jill, my stomach just turned over reading this.

Poor Lucy! And you and James! She couldn't ask to have better care than with you guys. Remember to take extra care of yourself while you are helping her. Bending over alot to help her with the harness can be stressful on your back and also emotionally draining as well.

She is a strong girl who loves you lots and will do everything she can to stay around and mobil. And to keep those boys in line too, I'm sure.

We are sending good thoughts, wishes and prayers for you guys!
Poor girl :( . I know that feeling well, when they can't get up but are determined to try. Jill, as you know Beau was on dermaxx for a long time and it worked really well so Lucy should do fine on it. Because the meds can be hard on the liver I did give him milk thistle 2x day for liver support.

:ghug: LUCY :ghug:
:ghug: JILL :ghug:
Welcome to my world, unfortunately. I hope the meds take affect and that Lucy feels better soon. :ghug:

It is very hard watching them at this stage of their lives. Drez is sorta okay once she's standing, but getting her to that position takes a lot. If she's on the hardwood floors, forget it. She'll never make it up on her own. If she's on carpeting, she can do it herself after many tries. Depends on her motivation. If she's in the TV room and Dale is getting food together in the kitchen, she'll KILL herself to get up! Like Lucy, her appetite, even through everything she's been through, has not waned!

Keep us posted, and give that sweet girl a hug from me!
Jill and James,
I am so sorry to hear that Lucy is having a bad time. I hope the meds work quickly to give her some relief. Its very hard to watch our puppers get old.
:ghug:
I haven't been around much this last week, and missed this thread till now....Oh Jill, I'm so sorry you and Lucy are going through this! :(

Its great news that her appetite is good, though. Hopefully the meds will help, and she'll feel better soon. :ghug:
Poor Lucy and Poor Jill.. I hope she starts to feel better once the meds kick in...

Sucks getting old
Poor Lucy! Give her a hug from us
Poor Lucy! I'm sending lots of positive thoughts her way.
:ghug:

I hope Lucy and you are doing better.

What happened can be very scary. I know Mopsy was in severe pain the day we let her go and she was looking like she had seizured as well. It scared the heck out of me but I was able to drag her to the carpet where we calmed her down and she started looking normal although she was unable to get up. :(
Poor sweet Lucy. Have you tried accupuncture? Helped my boy stay on his feet and comfortable.

I haven't but I've been thinking about it. I'd love to hear about your experiences. Can you PM me?
hope lucy feels better soon .. i too am going through this with my miss daytona, very heart breaking to watch she is on deramax but not really much help when she wants to jump up and run .. hang in there at lleast you are not alone in this
Poor Lucy! I don't know how I missed this thread.

I will think only good thoughts for Lucy and hope that she feels better soon. :ghug:

((((Hugs)))))

Lori
How did I miss this? Give Lucy (and Jill and James) a hug from me.

If there's anything I can do to help, give me a holler.

Metacam helped Belle a bit.
Jill, It sounds to me like Lucy had a seizure. Taylor has seizures and he collapes(SP), shakes, and drools. He is unable to get up for at least ten minutes although he tries very hard after the seizure is over. I actually have to make sure he stays down after or he will try to get to his feet to just fall over again. It scary to watch. I hope Lucy feels better once the drugs get into her system...Pam
