Chum's misadventure on the ride home

On the way home from Sheepiepalooza, I finally got a chance to go to the large Kill Creek Streamway dog park in De Soto Kansas. It is a large, natural area with paths and fields plus a deep muddy ravine with a stream. While we were there, we met up with a man walking his dog Olivia. Olivia and Maggie hit it off instantly and were running and romping together and the guy and I fell into a nice conversation while we walked and they played. Chum was staying near us.

On the way back, Olivia and Maggie started a race course down the 25 foot deep, steep muddy ravine, running and splashing up the stream, and then up another embankment. They were running these huge laps and of course Maggie was soaking wet and covered in thick mud.

Well, as the guy and I are crossing the bridge, Chum trotted ahead and then around the corner of the bridge to the edge of the steep embankment. By the time I crossed the bridge and turned the corner to see where she was, she had slipped and fallen three -quarter of the way down. She was on her side with front legs parallel to the hill and her face and rear legs pointed uphill. There was no way she could get up from that position.

I was trying to figure out how to get down and help her without landing in the stream myself because the bank was so steep and the mud was so slippery plus it was very rocky.

The guy, a real gentleman, says he will rescue her for me, but as he starts downhill, he slips and falls, crashing into Chum and then continuing to tumble head over heels while Chum yelped in fear. I am imagining the worst -- Chum's spine twisted / injured and the guy bashing his head on a rock. Somehow, they both were ok although they were both caked in mud and the guy gashed the corner of his nose, which was bleeding profusely.

It took some time to figure out how to get Chum up because it was so slippery, the guy could hardly stand up. But Chum had flipped over when he fell so she was able to get her self standing. The guy then scooted over to some rocks under the bridge and using the leash was able to coax Chum up the hill. The job was further complicated because Maggie and Olivia were continuing to run circles down the bank, through the stream and up the other side.

I was sooooo happy and relieved when both Chumley and the guy arrived safe at the top of the hill. What a hero that guy was!! His back and arms were completely covered in mud and his face was gushing blood but he still stopped to share some of his homemade dog treats with all 3 dogs before we left. That's when I noticed that his car seats were covered in plastic so he must be used to misadventures with dogs.

Oh, Val! So glad Chummie and the guy are both okay. Good thing you have that great first aid kit with you. That's at least twice you were able to use it on this trip.
OMG! Poor Chum!! That really was very nice of him to help you and Chumley out! I'm glad everyone is okay.
Oh, how scary! The image of Chummie falling and getting stuck almost made me cry, since the poor girl has overcome so much, only to go tumbling down a giant hill.

I'm so glad both Chum and the man were okay...

So, did you leave Maggie all muddy or were you able to wash her off before getting in the car?

I left her muddy. 8O

They both desperately need a bath today. . .

This is Maggie getting a treat from Chum's rescuer:

Oh no! Poor Chummie :(

Does she seem ok still? You would think she'd have at least some soreness after all that :(
Oh no!!!
I hope everyone is feeling OK now. How scary for all of you.

I know! I keep reliving it, imagining if she had gotten pushed onto a rock or if he had landed on her, crushing her spine. . .

She seems completely fine. She's been up and walking with no troubles. I think the thick mud probably helped cushion her fall.
What a hero that guy was. Glad Chumley is OK. I'll bet you don't visit that park again. It's time you guys go home and rest, young lady! :D
Thank goodness for the mud! I held my breath reading this.

What luck that you'd have such a wonderful guy around to help!

When I was going into the park, I did have a thought that after all my attempts to get there, I wondered if it would be worth it. I will never forget seeing poor Chum upended on that slope, smiling up at me, confident she would be rescued -- never again. That was such a near miss disaster. We drove straight through all the way to Boulder because I was too rattled to stop along the way.
wow...im glad everything turned out okay...i can only imagine how your heart must have stopped.....what a nice guy!!
Good God... you must of been scared.. I was holding my breath reading your post.. I am so glad that she is fine and that fellow was there to help..

Chum is one strong cookie...
Val: I am so glad all of you made it home safely. Wow, what an experience. Poor Chum and nice man. I hope he has also recovered from the tumble. Chum is probably ok because of the muscle build up she has now from walking so much. She is in good shape now. I can only imagine how nerve racked you must have felt to just head home and not stop. Hugs to all of you! :ghug:

I love the pic of dirty Maggie getting her treat. The look on her face makes me want to just hug her, dirt and all.
Oh my goodness! That was scary to read, I can't imagine seeing it all happen! Glad to hear that Chummie is okay; she is such a sweetheart. It always makes me happy to hear about nice strangers (especially nice dog-loving strangers) helping people.
What a great story. I'm so glad everything ended well. If it hadn't, it would've been a sad story rather than an exciting one!
After reading this article, I have been sitting slack-jawed for hours now.

I'm happy everyone is OK... I think. How's they guy's nose???
The Further Adventures of Chumley.

Glad it turned out okay.
Oh Val! I'm so glad Chum is okay! What a great guy!
So glad to hear Chum is going to be ok. And what a great guy for helping out that way.
Oh Val- I was holding my breath the whole time while reading this post.

I bet your heart was pounding so hard!! Thank goodness for the kind gentleman and the mud to break the impact.

How is Chum feeling now? Any side effects? What was her mood when she got back to where you were??
I hope she is ok- she is our hero.

No permanent damage. Looked like he tore a bit of his nostril but his nose was not broken. He really was a gentleman. He said that he thought it was essentially his dog's fault since she had shown Maggie the way down to the stream and then Chum naturally wanted to follow because she doesn't think in terms of limitations.

She is completely fine. The whole weekend was exhausting but really fun and stimulating for her. She is in great spirits from the whole adventure.
Val so glad you didn't slip down and hurt your leg and that Chum is okay too. Love that gal Maggie and her dirt fetish , what a great person the fellow was :D
Hi Val,
Glad to hear that Chumley is okay from that fall. She is so sweet and definitely don't deserve anything bad to happen to her. They both look so cute after their PetSmart baths.
Oh Val, I'm just so relieved to hear that Chum is okay after her ordeal! :phew: As I was reading it, I was thinking to myself - OMG! How will Val be able to get to her with her own leg problems? Wow! 8O

And it's so nice to hear that there are still some gentlemen left in the world!!
OH MY! 8O
Wow! That was scary. Good to know there are still some Knights in Shining Armor - or Muddy Pants - left out there!
*Read Val's post holding my breath*
Sooooo very glad nothing broken :phew:
For the sheepie girl Chum & her Knight in Shining Armor
Diane...never a dull moment w/a sheepie
8O 8O Chummie, you are going to give us all heart attacks! 8O 8O

Yes, thank heavens there are still gentlemen in the world!

And Maggie........not surprising.
Wow! 8O Glad everyone is okay!
I am just now reading this and cannot believe this happened. I am glad Chummie was okay both physically as well as mentally. Sometimes they get freaked out over incidents. Of course Chummie has been through a lot and she is a tough cookie. I would have been like you and driven straight home. What a great guy to have been so helpful.
WOE -

I was scared reading that, too. I actually cheated a little and read the "I'm glad you're ok" post below it before I continued. . . But I really AM glad you're both ok and in good spirits - I would have been terrified to hear those yelps.
Val, I think you gave us all a heart attack. I had read about your ride home but never dreamed this had happened. I'm sooo glad everything turned out ok. I can't imagine how scared you were when you saw Chum like that. Whoever that guy is he deserves a gold medal(and a nose bandage)! I think you BOTH need to take it easy for awhile....Pam
