My OES and my cat

Our OES is a 4 year old rescue and we have had him for three days. Our cat, Tybalt, is very interested in him and has made several kind attempts to interact with him. Teddy just averts his eyes and palys like he doen't know Tybalt is there. It is too funny to think that such a big dog may have anxiety over a cat. We had a Great Pyrenees and she did the same thing with our other cat. Any insight?

Thank you for rescueing! And welcome to the forum!

I would bet that many OES people wish that their dog reacted that way!

What he is displaying is appeasement behavior. He is saying that he wishes not to be bothered, and that he is not a threat. Very good signals for you to catch!
My oes just looks for the cats and wants to play. They run and he chases.
My cat scares the hoo-hoo out of both sheepie girls and the Golden Retriever. The dogs weigh 88, 82 and 105 lbs. The cat weighs 9 lbs now.
The cat doesn't have front claws either. She has been in charge since we got her, all 5 lbs.

My older son has a 10 week old Blue Heeler that was rescued from a cemetery. The little nipper also weighs 9 lbs. Zoey is also teaching her to respect cats.

London may be having her Sheepie Girls Gone Wild Camp, I've got Puppy Daycare & Training Camp at my house this summer.
George adores cats!! (I think he thinks they are little dogs which are his favourite!!)

A cat had been using our garden as a short cut for ages until we got George. It came in a they both looked at each other. The cat ran away and George looked shocked that it didn't want to play with him!!

Now when he sees one he wags his tail, play bows and thinks they are playing games when they run away!!!
We had our cat Eli about 2 yrs. prior to getting Jake, our Lab that passed away at 12 yrs. old. Eli terriorized that poor dog. We got Chauncey about 6 mos after Jake died and Eli ruled the roost until he passed away a few mos. ago.
I've found that if the cat is in the house before the dog, the cat rules :o
I have a cat who was 5 when I got my Phlufie. Phlufie was 17 lbs... the cat has no front claws and weighted about 7 lbs (Persian). Phlufie saw the cat and wanted to play bad, but the cat didn't want to have anything to do with him. One day (I don't know how I had a camera on my hand), Phlufie jumped on the cat.... the cat slapped Phlufie's face with his clawless paw several times (and yes I could hear it), and Phlufie jumped backward way high in the air. I have the before and after pictures. The dog was totally stunned.

Of course, the size difference is too great now, but the dog always has this fear of the cat because of that beating session lon long ago.
Bell so desperatly wants to play with our cat Tonka. Tonka is one of those aloof cats. He will quite happily play with our other dog Guiness but he isnt keen on Bell.

He does that paw batting thing at Bell everytime she comes near him, so now, Bell thinks that is how to play with Tonka and the 2 of them will sit there batting their paws at each other.. it is one of the funniest things i have seen and i will get it on video one day.

So my situation is reverse to yours.. but thing about cats is.. they are weird critters..reallllllllly weird critters.. 8O
