http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/dis ... id=8492570 and http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/dis ... id=8492578 I called the shelter and they will not release these dogs to rescue as they are "very adoptable". A woman at the shelter named Dixie assured me that these dogs would NOT be euthanized and that several adoption applications have already been received for them. The shelter was not interested in any OES Rescue getting involved, even to offer the new owners assistance with behavioral issues or help in grooming. If anyone is interested in either of these two sheepies, please contact the shelter directly and submit an application. They DO accept out of state applicants however the adoptive family must come to the shelter to pick up the dog. I'd love to see these dogs go to OES-experienced homes... Just wanted to let everyone know that we are aware of these sheepies and did try to get them into rescue. Dixie at the shelter was very nice and I'm sure they'll do their best to find suitable homes for Molly and Joey. At least they're safe. |

The picture is the same for Molly and Joey. They must be identical twins. Boy and girl identical twins. How rare and exciting! |
Too bad you don't know a family who could, um, adopt these two from the shelter -- and then realize they were too much to handle... like on the way home. |

Yeah, I considered that but when we place dogs in homes we trust that the adopters won't do that very thing. Our contract states that the dog must be returned to us. It's important to have a good working relationship with shelters and humane societies. If the dogs are returned to them they will be more likely to call an OES rescue to place them next time. |

I really don't understand the shelters reluctance about this. Wouldn't it behoove the shelter to educate new owners about whatever breed they are adopting? Am I being naive or wouldn't it help to stop owner surrender to some small degree if people knew what they were getting into? Grooming and behavior seem to top the list of reasons why dogs are surrendered, why not take advantage of the knowledge and experience being offered? |
First let me say I greatly admire anyone who works in one of these facilities. It's a tough job and that has more heartbreaks than rewards. They see every breed of dog imaginable and probably don't realize that OES can be a quirky breed and to properly groom them is a nightmare for an inexperienced first-time owner. Maybe someone at the shelter IS familiar with OES?
Beyond that, I'm just as puzzled as you are, Holly. It seems that if someone is willing to help out their new adopters, it would mean less work for the shelter in the long run. Maybe they've had problems with breed rescues in the past? One bad incident can really leave a nasty impression of rescues in general. bestdogsx4 wrote: Maggie McGee IV wrote: The shelter was not interested in any OES Rescue getting involved, even to offer the new owners assistance with behavioral issues or help in grooming. I talked to my friend in KY last night and she contacted them and filled out an application. So lets see what happens.
I believe it's all about the adoption fee. These dogs are young and bring in a huge adoption fee. I am sure if they were seniors they would let the rescue have them. Just my expersience. |

So...umm....GUESS WHAT?!? |
Okay, fine. I just realized there is no one here to respond to my big announcement and I'm too tired (and excited) to wait....
We adopted Molly!!! We were working on adopting Bo in Ohio but I got a little nervous when I found out he had never been around another male dog. He evidently has some food aggression issues with other dogs (not people) and I wasn't sure how he would react to my male Wheaten mix. I'm sure all would have been fine but I thought I would apply for one of these two and see what happened. I was approved (rather quickly which is scary) and we decided to make the 5+ hour drive today and meet Molly. She's a doll and we of course fell in love!! She and my Wheaten got along just fine...though she wanted to play and he was a little too concerned with why he was at a shelter. We took her straight to a do-it-yourself dog wash and bathed her. She did EXCELLENT. She's been good with my 2 yr. old (obviously very closely supervised). She was great on the drive home, we didn't even hear a wimper out of her. She's been a little testy with Parker (the Wheaten) since we've been home. I think it is a food issue (GO FIGURE!). Their food bowls were in seperate rooms and they were seperated by a baby gate and even though she wasn't overly interested in her food she wanted to make sure he wasn't near it. We'll obviously have some adjusting to do.... |
Yay!
Congratulations!!!! So what was Molly's story? |
Congrats!
Is Joey still there? Is it a nice place? |
YAY Congratulations so excited for you, look forward to seeing piccys too.
Well done and hugs to you all |
Congradulations! Best of luck with Molly! I will be looking forward to stories about how everyone adjust to each other. Pictures Please! Have fun with your new addition. |
Congrats! Can't wait to hear all about her and see pictures. |

They told me he hasn't had any applications for him yet but that he is in absolutely no danger of being put down. We met him as well. He seemed sweet. I got a few good kisses from him and he was anxious to play with his sister. He's bigger than Molly and too thin but I think he would be a great dog. By the way, the dog in the picture (for both Molly and Joey) is Molly. He has the same markings but he is lighter colored than Molly. Ron wrote: So what was Molly's story?
Molly and Joey are brother and sister and were picked up by animal control completely matted and filled with fleas. Their owner showed up a few days later and decided to surrender them as they were too much for her to handle. The shelter thought it was both a time and financial burden. I have Molly's AKC application and she came from a breeder (BYB) in Kentucky. One other note-- We might be changing her name as we know WAY too many Molly's (both two legged and four). We're leaning towards either Millie or Lucy. We need more time with her to decide which fits her the best. |
Congrats that's great that Molly found a great home! |
CONGRATS! and Thank you for rescuing Molly! |
Thanks so much for rescuing this girl -- be sure to add her to the "rescued by this forum" thread!
Too bad you couldn't take both Molly and Joey together. How about if I beg? Regarding a new name, have you given serious consideration to Veronica (Ronni)? Kind of similar to Molly.... |
When Kayti called me last night and told me about the adoption I asked her, why did you not get the male, we could have taken him into our rescue. Well, I understand, she had no room in the car.
With the baby and her dog and all the other stuff we carry. Since they don't want rescue to take the Joey, I am working to see if somebody can pull him, I can foster. Smokey just left for her new home, so I have room. Poor boy, lost his sister, we got to get him. Can you tell, I love them boys |
I would love to take Joey if he's that sweet but it's a 6hr drive for me and there is no way dh would let me make it!
Too bad they won't let someone else pick him up for me |
CONGRATULATIONS, Missing Murphy!!!!!
Get some pictures of Molly/Millie/Lucy/ Veronica posted ASAP! I cant wait to see her, happy in her new home! |

She means me, not Kayti. It was very hard to leave poor Joey behind. The carseat alone takes up space and then a crate for Molly (now Lucy...sorry Ron), Parker our Wheaten, all the "what if" supplies you need when traveling with an unknown dog for 5+ hours, not to mention the kid supplies!! I felt like we were leaving for a month not just a day!! |
Sorry, Tasha, got confused again, another senior moment
I did call my friend Jim up in KY and he will get Joey out on Tuesday, but I have to have a foster home because he can't foster. He has to many dogs. |
Darn, I emailed the shelter begging them to let someone pick him up for me. If he's as sweet as Tasha says, CONTACT ME Ingrid! |
OK Kayti, I will let you know.
Where are you again, forgive me, I can't remember. I am dealing with so many dogs right now and still some coming in. If we pull, can you foster and if you like him, keep him? Please PM me. |
He did seem sweet though I only saw him for a few minutes and didn't see him off lead. We were in the "play yard" and he sniffed at my daughter and other dog, but he really wanted to play with his sister. I think they must have been pretty good partners in crime! He wanted to jump a little in greeting but I'm sure he had not been properly exercised in a while and had lots of extra energy.
I really hope he finds a good home! (hint, hint-Kayti) |
If the shelter agrees, I can pull Joey and transport toward Kayti. Can also arrange some short-term fostering if necessary. |
Keeping fingers crossed for Joey too Go nita, go Kayti. |

I live very close to New Albany and could rescue Joey and take him to a foster home. I have to work Tuesday but could help afterwards - please let me know. I also have an adoorable 2 year old female I rescued 3 months ago who is ready for adoption - she will be on Ingrid's rescue site soon. |
I am near Cincinnati. How can I help? I have a van and I am almost out of school for the summer. |
I can definately take him. I'm in Michigan and would do a foster to own too.
Just let me know what I need to do! |
Congratulations to Lucy for finding a new home and family!
I am so glad to see Joey is going to find a new home through all of your efforts! You guys (and gals) are my heroes!! |
I just learned that Joey has been adopted, too!
Three cheers for Joey!!! |
Hurray for Joey |
Did someone from the list adopt Joey? |
Does anyone know who adopted Joey? |
Yep, some of us know but can't tell....
Joey is very close to oes.org. He's currently in the Witness Protection Program and has a new identity now . He's doing just fine |
Lol. I was waiting to post until I had some pictures but I guess I can reveal a little. Joey is now officially known as Max and lives with my mom! He wasn't working out with the family he was with so, given that my home is full, I called my mom to ask her if she could foster for a week until I could get him back into rescue. After four days, she failed fostering. Her exact words were, "You know Jill, I really don't think he's going to be happy anywhere else." Lol.
He's doing great and has already spent a lot of time with Bear and Clyde. Even from the first time he met them, he wasn't intimidated or anything, which made me love him even more! He is the fastest OES that I've ever seen. My mom loves having a buddy around the house and she also loves that he motivates her to get up and move more since they go on walks and play ball and stuff like that. She hasn't been ready for a dog since she lost her beloved Winston 7 years ago but Max couldn't have been more perfect. He's a super good boy and I'm happy to report a happy ending. I promise to post pictures soon. Before anyone asks, "Have you gotten your mom to join oes.org?" I'll let you know that she and computers are not friendly. I've tried to show her about ten times and I ran out of patience. You'll just have to get your Max fixes through me. |
That is absoutly wonderful news for your Mom and Max.
Another happy ending. |
Oh Jill!
I was hoping they'd be a match. I am so happy for them. Give both your mom and Max a great big hug from all of us. |

I love these happy endings! It's the only reason I dare read this section - I'd want to take them all. |
How great for your Mom, sounds like she has a wonderful companion and how great for Max, he to sounds like he has a wonderful companion |
Woo hoo Mom! |
Way to go Mom! Happy to hear about a match made in heaven. |
I kept meaning to ask you where Max was from when you had mentioned your Mom's OES. I knew I hadn't heard about her having an OES before.
CONGRATS to her and Max!!! |
Okay, Jill's taking too long to post photos of Max so here are a few:
Bad hair day but at least we're out of the shelter! (Wouldn't you want to be in the witness protection program with this mop?) After losing the mophead: What a handsome boy! Add your comment |
I think she posted them in the Pictures section already, but I like them here, too!!!
Great stuff. |

Okay kids... now stop your bickering so the rest of us can "ooo" and "aaah" over this handsome boy. WHAT a cutie pie!! I was soo glad to see his "big hair" brought back down to a crew cut. What a sweet face he's got. It thrills my heart to hear such wonderful placement stories. Thanks Jill and Nita (or should I say Nita and Jill so you don't start up again ) for sharing him with us. |
Are those ears always up like that? I love it. |
I am soooooo happy he is safe & in a great home!
Love his eyes (look just like my Fergus') I worried about this boy & thought he fell of the face of the earth I can't express how happy I am! THANKS! |
What terrific news!! Bravo!! |
