jealousy?

I have an almost two year old sheepie named Otis--he is a terrific dog, very affectionate and has never met a person he doesn't like. However, my boyfriend and I went away for three days and Otis stayed with his "grandparents" who have a six year old english bulldog. Otis is familiar with Sarge and they have spent time together before with us--when we arrived last night Otis was ecstatic to see us of course. We were sitting on the couch when Sarge came in the room and wanted to come and say "hi", but when Otis noticed him trying to climb on Coley or come say hello to me Otis went after him. Otis was on the ground and was really aggressive toward Sarge-it was almost an all out fight. Coley grabbed Otis, held him down, and said wrong. What could cause this behavior? I am worried that he will behave like this again and of course I would never want him to act like that with an adult or worse a child who came in close contact with one of us. Any advice would be appreciated. I don't want to be afraid to pet other dogs around Otis. Usually he just tries to put his body between me and the other dog.

I think that you are correct to be asking these questions.

The first question that comes to my mind is: Is Otis neutered or intact?
He is neutered, but Sarge is not.
Who is Coley?
Willow, I can't be sure but I presumed he's Otisma's boyfriend.
My guess would be this behavior was due to the returning of you and your boyfriend and the excitement that Otis was feeling - and he didn't want anyone else to cut in on his time. It's jealousy - and hopefully it won't happen again - but I would see if they can get together with everyone around and see if he's still acting up.

Was this the first time you've left him???

This same thing happened when I left my dog's at a kennel - when they got home - Presley was horrible - she fought with both Sydney & Brittney. I read about Territorial Aggression in the book The Dog's Mind and did some of the things they suggest (make sure she knew I was alpha, etc.) Thankfully it helped!

Good Luck!
