Charlie( my oes mix) is having problems emptying his anal glands..according to the vet they are positioned too low. He had an infection last year where pus was coming out of his butt...I know it sounds gross.. but it wasn't as bad as last Friday..I noticed redness around his anus area and when I looked closely there was a lump. By the time I noticed it my vet was closed so I decided to wait til next day...well after maybe 3 hours...it looked a lot more red and as if it was going to burst open and he started picking it...I decided to take him to the E-vet...thank God I did that.... as soon as I got there...there was an opening in his skin where pus and blood were coming out... the vets said that it comes out suddenly...they emptied it and flushed out with antibiotics, he got a shot of steroid for the inflammation and antibiotics...he is now on oral antibiotics...but they did mentioned the possibility of having to remove his anal glands....the thing about it is that infrequently the side effect of the surgery is fecal incontinence if not done by an expert. For now... we are going to try expressing his anal glands every 4 to 6 weeks and see how he does..otherwise..surgery will be my last choice. Has anybody had this problem and if your dog got surgery did it get fecal incontinence. I felt so bad for him..they didn't give him any anesthesia and that had to be painful... the vets said that he was very good and didn't even complained. Sorry about this long message ...I just need some advise about this surgery. |

I have no personal experience with that. But, I do know a few people in our basset rescue group whe have had it done to their dogs. They had no trouble, but I remember discussions about the risks you mention. It is usually a last resort treatment. I know several had good luck by increasing the roughages in their dog's diet - like pumpkin on top of the dog food. Good luck. |
Hi. I had my pug's anal glands removed last October. They were infected as well and I was taking her once every two weeks or so to get them expressed. The surgery went well and she has had no problems since. |
Poor Charlie, how old is he? Luke used to have the same problem when he was young but seemed to outgrow it. He will be ten in June and hasn't had a reoccurence in many years. |
thank you guys for your help. I would prefer not to do surgery...but it will be my last resort. Charlie is 6 going 7 in December. Otherwise he is very healthy. |
