Bert started barking early this morning, in a loud, serious tone I had NEVER heard from him before. It was completely unlike his play bark (we call it the "chihuahua bark') or even his "someones at the door bark" (deeper and a bit less embarrassing). This was something new, and he obviously felt that he had a serious job to do, giving the alarm . So I got up and looked out the bedroom window to see 2 huge moose, eating tree-buds RIGHT outside the dog-yard fence. Abby looked at them, kinda shrugged, and went about her morning stretches and grumbles , but Bert continued to dutifully sound the "alarm". By the time I got dressed, and got downstairs, there was no sign of the moose, so I let the dogs out into the yard to go potty. Just as I was stepping out, though (to clean up), Bert came BARRELING towards me at top speed, his eyes wide, and I saw that one of the moose had circled back around, and was actually peering over the fence at us! I shooed the dogs inside, at which point Eggbert just stared SILENTLY out the window at the moose, until they wandered off....I guess my boy is a bit more courageous with a sheet of glass between him and a large herbivore! |

How funny! And how sad you weren't able to get pictures!
Are moose known to attack? Bert was trying his best to protect his mommy and property, so give him a big 'ole hug from Drez and me!! |
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!
Tasker had an encouter with a moose a couple years ago. We had just moved in and I taking him out for our first walk. I live WAY out in the country with my nearest and only neighbor about 1/4 mile away. We were walking along the side of the road, Tasker being very obedient (dirt road no traffic) so I let him off leash. As we passed the neighbors house Tasker suddenly made a mad dash for the back yard, I heard him barking and barking as I have never heard him barking before. I beat feet to the neighbors back yard and found Tasker barking his fool head off at a life size wooden Moose cut out I literally had to DRAG him home. Must be sheepies don't like Moose |
Yes moose can be mean so he was just protecting...good sheepie!! |

Must be sheepies don't like Moose OMG Ginny, that is HILARIOUS! And yes, Drezzie's Mom, Moose are actually quite dangerous...especially if they have a calf with them. (these 2 did not). I had been concerned about what Bert's reaction to them would be, if we came across one on a trail....I guess now I know that he'll come running back to Momma! |
OMG, poor Bert must have been terrified. But, his chivalry toward you is marvelous. |
That's SOOOOOOOOO exciting. Of course kind of scary too, but considered a great day to me if something like that happens! I'm glad none of your dogs want to charge towards the moose.
Coincidently, while we had Yuki with us, we saw this one along the Glenn. Walked by us scared to death. Wish Yuki knew how to shut up!!! She's going to kill us. We did buy some bear bells like your suggested at REI! |
Wow moose. I only ever see them on TV in a documentry. How cool to have a moose in the neighbourhood.
Ours is wombats, they come out at night and when they do up at the farm kelsey is the window guard, she barks at them, try and put her outside and the brakes activate on her paws. She is so tough when there is a window between her and the wildlife, a whimp when not. Kelsey thinks Bert is her kinda guy. |

I think they are adorable! |

When I lived in MT near Glacier National park ALL the tourists buy bear bells. We called them dinner bells, "Here, bearie, bearie, beaire!" It's really cool you had a moose out your back door. Your story is hilarious!!! Windows are definitely a safety barrier! |
That's what I always thought they were Mop lover Ravenmoonart convinced me to get them though.

All that the bells do is give wildlife a little bit of warning that you're there, so at LEAST you don't have a startled Bear or moose to deal with! When I was a kid, we were taught to sing while we did stuff outdoors, for the same reason....we've never let this one girl live down the time we were picking berries in Whittier (very much bear country) and she choose to sing, "Oh I wish I were an Oscar Meyer Weiner...." We told her "Hey! we're supposed to be scaring them off, not advertising how tasty we are!" |
No moose here, but we did have a visit from a big black bear last night. I wish they'd leave the birdfeeders alone |
