Don was working in the shed this morning and when I went out to see him we heard a very loud meowing. Under a blanket that covered an old dresser we found a litter of kittens, and their mom staring at us. We stepped back and mom took off. Well, we live in the country and there was no way that these little things were going to be road kill so we took them out and got them safe, and called the local humane society for advice. My boys enjoyed them while I was on the phone. We put them into a large dog crate, left it a bit open so mom could get in and out and left them alone for a bit. When we go back we saw only 4 left and mom had one in her mouth in the rafters of the shed. We quickly locked up the shed. We took two down to the HS to get their age, and they are estimated at 5 weeks of age. We left the 2 kittens there, borrowed a cat trap, and set it up in our shed, beside the crate with the 2 other kittens...3 hours later, it was very quiet so we assumed mom had disappeared somehow with the one kitty. I didn't want to leave the kittens out in the cold shed tonite, so guess where they are now?....In my dining room. Seems one of my neighbors keeps kitties in her barn...She has about 13 of them, unaltered, and this particular one keeps crossing the road and having kitten in diferent barns. I called her up, she refuses to spay/neuter her barn cats, and suggested I just let the kittens and mom all go....I hardly think so. We checked the shed, and the mom actually is still in there. So mom is in my shed, with one baby, 2 other babies are here with me in my house and going to the HS tomorrow, and the other 2 are already there. Why oh why don't people care about all the cats being born? They sure are cute, though... |

Is the mom cat taking care of the kitties? 5 weeks is so young- poor little kitties. They are awfully cute though!
I am actually dreading kitten season. I have only dealt with little kittens once since I started doing rescue, and we lost them all. I don't know if I'm equipped to do that again |
Great news! We caught the mom and Don climbed up onto the rafters and collected the last little kittie.
Animal control is on thier way so the whole family will be together again....and safe.......Yeah! |
oh that is wonderful! great job! |

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
So glad you're able to help them!! I know the feeling all too well. Last year we first had one single cat come up to our back porch (we later saw her littermates, who are still running around the neighborhood), and we took her to a local cat rescue.
Then about a month later we had another litter of 4 come up to our porch taking refuge. We brought them in, adopted one out ourselves, and the other three went to the same cat rescue. Can't WAIT for kitten season this year!! |
I wish that there wasn't an overpopulation problem, because kittens and puppies are SO CUTE! I was just telling my husband that last night. |
Thankyou for saving these babies, they are really adorable too, very pretty kitties, let's hope they find wonderful homes now they are all safe.
Here all cats must be microchipped now, registered with council, desexed, unless a registered breeder and not allowed to roam so it has made a huge difference here to strays and dumping cat problems and seems to be making a difference now as people who let there cats wander or dump them can now be traced & fined. |
The mom and kitties were picked up on Sunday nite, but I had them in this dog crate while we were waiting.
They were not happy campers! |
Is there any way you can work with a local vet & your neighbor & see if they will spay/neuter the cats for a discount or for free? My old vet used to go around in a mobile vet unit and try to gather up cats in certain areas and spay & neuter them to cut down on the population.
They are cute but geez, poor kitties. Our problem here is that there are baby rabbits all over the place. I caught Haggis, our Norfolk Terrier with his head in the rabbit hole last night. Luckily, he only took out the stuffing fur and never got to the bunnies which are the size of mice. |

I will call the HS and speak to my vet. We'd need to trap her kitties, who are kind of wild, in order to do that...But it is worth trying. I am really not confident that she will go for it, though. It is her barn and she de-fleas them and de-worms them, but balked when I mentioned getting them altered. She grew up on a farm, and kind of smiled saying something to the affect of "that is the life of a barn cat"....She just doesn't get it. Maybe she does't mind seeing the dead cats on the side of the road..... Many of them I am sure where born on her property... But if I made it easy, and inexpensive, she might think about it. In the meantime I will leave my shed open for now on, and any of her pregnant cats that come to MY house to have their kitties will be trapped and saved. The Humane Society here is really good, and I do a lot of canine rescue work with them, so maybe they will allow me to use their vets for cheap or free...... |
I love the pic of them in the crate. |
