kittens

Tuesday morning I noticed a dead cat on the road, didn't think much other than "poor kitty." Friday afternoon after returning from visiting husband in hospital I hear screaming kittens. The dogs and I rush out to the shed and there are 4 babies demanding their mother and food. Uh Oh.

The dogs sniff and look at me, "Make them stop crying." I have no milk in the house so make dog food soup instead. The moisture must have been enough. Yesterday they once again appeared, this time I had milk. So I sat with a syringe (I need a pet bottle) and filled each one up and then let them have a go at some more dog food soup. Now the dogs are fascinated, especially MO. She is trying to find her herding genes to keep the kittens closer to the shed. They are about 3-4 weeks old and wandering when they are out.

Funniest thing was at one point the orange kitty started climbing up MO's leg and of course got stuck with it's nails. There stood MO with a sheepdog look, "I've got this thing hanging on my leg, what do I do?"

When I go into town for church and visit hubby today I'll get some cat food, but I can't keep these little ones, I've got bird feeders galore.

Poor babies:(

If they are 3-4 weeks old they can eat canned cat food, or cat food kibble soaked with water. Milk can give them diarreah... same with dogs... goats milk would be ok though... it has slightly less lactose than cows milk, but still more than cat or dog milk.

I hope they make it...
Ahhh - poor little guys! I'm glad you are able to help them for a bit. I hope MO keeps helping out so much!!
Too bad you don't live closer. I have a ton of powdered kitten formula leftover from when I tried to bottle feed my stranded bunny babies last year. Since they died so fast, I'm left with a giant can of kitty formula but no kitties (or bunnies). I feel like as soon as I throw it away, I'll need it for something!
Thanks for the help. I'll stop by the vet's tomorrow to see if they have anything, otherwise, it's a trek into town. I'm worried about one little ....no for that matter I'm worried about all four. Until they can self feed I'll worry. Another one who is worried is MO! She's taken to this Nanny business, but alas, she just doesn't know what to do. When I drove in, Mo came around the corner of the house followed by the yellow kitten...who promptly fell off the driveway edge. Apparently it screamed because MO immediately turned around and went back to it.

I'll be sad if they don't make it, but then they were doomed when their mother died.

What about soymilk? Would that help if it were mixed with the canned milk for the coming evening feeds?
wishing you, MO and the 4 kittens the best of luck :D
What a sweet Mother's Day surprise.

My cats always did fine with regular milk but alot of people use canned evaporated milk instead.

Good luck!
Oh, how sad...Good luck with them...
Can you take them to the local shelter? At eight weeks they are old enough to be adopted and find good homes. I hate to think that even if they make it they would still be homeless.
That's so sad, what a darling gentle boy Mo is. :D

Kitten season is definately here. :( I wish people would de-sex there cats.
Harry the sheepie wannabe stabbed himself again. He and several other dogs run through the shrubbery and somewhere is a staub--a projection he tears himself on. Short of removing all the shrubbery here, I can't find the problem.....anyway Monday a.m. I called the vet, "Harry's done it again." No sutures this time since he tore off a hunk on skin plus a puncture.....

ANYWAY...

Gave me chance to talk yo vet about kittens, Vet had replacement milk, but only one can (btw, it is skim milk based...) Plus Purina gives new kitten owners about a gallon of kittie chow free. Phew. Yestday they ate well.....yes, still four kittens. Wish they would self feed so we could start the cat food mush.

Each day's visit to hospital to husband, I relate the animal goings on, I think he misses the animals more than me..........hrumph. No I know that's not true. Especially with Harry now wearing a lampshade.

siMOne is still doing her herding routine. So glad she's shaved or else the kittens would be riding around her like little marsupials.
:phew: You sure have lots going on !
Way tooooo much to do for this old arthritic, heart problem body to handle.......plus 2 acres of grass and an orchard to irrigate.....forget about spraying this year, wormy apples.

Told a friend I'm ready to take up drinking if I could find the time.......coffee is gone, time to start the day.
Hang in there!! In my family, whenever anyone felt overwhelmed, my dad told the story about a poor farming couple who are barely making ends meet, fighting with each other, and very unhappy. They go to the pastor for advice and he says "Bring in the cow!" The next week they go to the pastor with all the usual complaints, plus complaints about the cow -- she's huge, she smells, she's not housetrained. . .

It goes on from there. Every week is worse and the pastor advises them to bring in the chickens, the goat, the pig, etc. When all the farm animals are in the house and the couple is at the breaking point, the pastor tells them to put them all out again and suddenly the house feels large and their life feels manageable.

We all loved that story. My dad could just say "bring in the cow!" and we knew just what he meant.

Your life seems a bit like that -- the sheepies, husband in the hospital, acreage to care for, and now the kittens on top of it all. Good luck getting them safely on their way and enjoying all that newfound free time!!

Thank you Val.....This story has just become a new favorite of mine!!! I LOVE it! Bring in the COW! :cow:
Yes, it will get better. Now my worry is a hawk will come along and pick off the kitties since they are wandering around more and more. Still not eating on their own, but getting close. Tortoise about destroyed the kittie milk bottle, first time he/she grabbed hold. May have to go back to the turkey baster,

At what point should I take them to animal humane.....when the are self feeding of course, but any idea age.........6-8 weeks?
Still have them and they are still on the bottle. Now that husband is home he can help with the feeding. I bring the squirts inside in a box. I grab one from the box for feeding and Paul holds the box closed...otherwise the three remaining try to climb out. That is far better than sitting outside with them feeding one while the other three use my legs as scratching posts or to climb up my body and big my face. Aren't they so cute??!! NOT!

Anyway, siMOne continues being a good Nanny. Instead of keeping them rounded up for me, she now sits patiently as I feed one, then when I'm finished I cover the paws with a towel and let the sheepdog clean the kitty. She knows if she's missed one.....better at keeping track than Paul and I.

This afternoon while carrying in the groceries I heard the Four Meows in the garage.......there they were sitting inside Jack's crate. I'm sure Jack is just thrilled..............
