It'll even out after a while...my pups good looks have survived numerous not-so-great clip jobs!
You might consider just shaving him ALL the way down though, just because it will grow back really nice and even quicker, that way....I personally LOVE all the cute fuzzy in-between stages they go through from shaved-to-long haired And hey...come on.....cough up some pics....I'm about to shave mine down, and I could use a good "wow it could be worse" scenario! |
I am too embarrassed to post a pic. And I have to think twice about shaving him the rest of the way. It might look even worse, IF that is possible. I wonder how he got so matted. I was good about bathing him and keeping him brushed. I mean it was like cutting carpet off of him. Real soft undercoat but matted really bad. Do OES loose their undercoat that makes this happen? Just wondering how a few weeks ago I could brush him just fine and before I shaved him I couldn't of got a pitch fork through his hair if I tried. |
I agree with Laurel! Come on... post a picture. I know you feel bad but it's just hair and the good news is that DOES grow back. I clip mine too and I don't have a license nor an education either The only way you're going to learn how to do it is to actually give it a try.
Quote: And my 5 year old said I guess we can't take Shaggy to the park any more.
I STILL don't know how to trim their beards (maybe someone can explain it to me?) I can tell you though that they're very happy to have those nice cool summer hairdos. Anyway, don't feel bad. Here's my naked sheepies... now show us yours! http://oesusa.com |
After 37 years I can do an awful job too if the clippers aren't working right, my back hurts or the dog isn't cooperating.
Just even it up and let it start all over again. No use having a lion, just make a "grey ghost" and move on. Your pup will love the shorter hair come warm weather and you get to rub your pup all over his body....mine love that!!! In six months you'll be thinking.........hmmmm, maybe I should trim in and in 9 months it will be............where is the clipper???? |
They never look as bad as you think they do . His coat will grow out about 1" per month so he'll be back to normal in no time. |

English Sheepie, Believe me I feel for for you about your pup not looking "himself" after being clipped but as many have said it will grow back. You will however need to "even it up" so it can grow back without big "steps" between the currently trimmed and untrimmed areas. I am however more concerned about your comments regarding his "sudden matting". How old is your pup? If he is between 8 and 20 months he may well have entered the puppy to adult coat transition phase, commonly known as "blowing coat". This is the only time in a healthy Bobtail's life that he will "shed" and strictly speaking it is not really shedding anyway. Trying to keep them in decent shape during this period is especially challenging. The age at which a Bobtail blows coat can vary quite significantly as does the intensity and duration of the change. Let us know a bit more about your pup and if this is the case we can help you through this phase, and commiserate with you as well. We have all been there and doen that, one way or another! Hope to hear from you again soon. Thanks and Cheers. Carl |
HAIR GROWS BACK!!!
The only way you will learn is by doing, my first few (and more) clips were AWFUL, but the more I clip the better I get. You will save an amazing amount of money over the life time of your dog and you will get better. Even now, my first clip of the year leaves poor Tasker looking a bit like a skinned hog, but within a few weeks he looks great. Don't give up!!!!!!!!!!! |
Yes it does!!!!! Ive just clipped maizie!!! Look!!!!
She will soon grow back!!!! |
She looks FINE!!!!!!!!!! |
Maizie looks just fine!! I miss her longer hair, but the short fluffies are cute. |
Grooming your own dog at home is one of those times that practice makes you better a little bit at a time. Fur grows. I haven't gotten up the nerve to cut Izzie myself, but will probably try in a few weeks. If I get decent enough at it I will probably keep doing it myself.
I think they key is that I think Izzie is the cutest dog ever no matter her cut. She isn't tall enough to see in the mirrors so she won't be able to see my hack job, and I will still rub and pet and fawn over her so she knows I love her. I hope you keep trying....please post a picture so we can see your beautiful dog |
It's really quite easy, if you make a mistake you just go shorter and shorter and SHORTER.......... pretty soon there is no hair left ot make a mistake on and your OES looks a bit like a cow in a field. Here is Tasker after one of my "home jobs"

LOL
Hey, lots of people pay good money to get the shaved look! |
Oh.. are we posting our first attempts at shaving.... well then here's my mine...
How pathetic is that face.. trust us.. you do get better at it with time. |
Well, I wish I could tell you that was my FIRST attempt, but it wasn't But as I said.... HAIR GROWS |
Don't worry. My first job didn't turn out very good. It was very patchy. I couldn't stand it and went back the next day to even it out. It wasn't perfect but it looked better. Its us who agonize over the haircuts but in truth I don't think that the dogs really care if they are choppy or not. |
I am sure you look better about clipping than I would! I wouldn't have a clue how to start! It sounds like he really appreciates the clip if it got rid of matts! I noticed you mentioned bathing him. Sometimes this can cause matting, too, if he isn't groomed completely out before and after.
I'm going through matts with my 11 months old right now. especially on the neck . . . it's like a full time job getting them out every day. He is starting to get some adult coat in, and WOW . . . |
Now I'm really concerned. I just broke down and ordered some clippers last night. Really thought (think ) I can shave Sophie down. Had it done about 6 weeks ago and its about 1 1/2 " now. Here in Missouri it gets hot and humid. She is much more comfortable shaved. I am thinking I can do it since it is shaving her. How hard can that be? Will keep you posted. And as everyone says, "it will grow back!" Hope to post before and after, unless it is really horrible! |
ok u all have shaved, I have clipped no shaver yet , Felt so bad for the heat here in Georgia has been like the hinges of Hell.. So Fiona and I bit the bullet, She is not how I would have liked but she looks so much cooler , and as everyone says practice makes perfect , sigh ... when is that perfect ? Wink . |
My husband started clipping Bailey at home after we paid a groomer a lot of money and got a terrible haircut. That was about a year ago and he's getting pretty good now! |
Oh yes, we have all done the bad haircuts. I haven't been convinced that we need to shave Callie yet, so I always scissor cut. The problem with this is that scissor cutting leaves a lot of room for error. The first couple of times, I thought she looked alright - not perfect by any means, but at least okay. But this last cut, I don't know if I was half asleep while I was doing it or what, but it turned out really bad. I was embarrased to take her out in public too. We had to go to the vet, and they were quick to let me know about their new grooming services!
But then it started to grow out and I remembered that it's not her fault she has a bad haircut, so we went back to the soccer park she loves. And you know what is funny? People always tell me how well groomed she looks! Most non-sheepy people have no idea what a really well-groomed sheepdog should look like, so they think any clean fluffy dog looks great. Now, those people at Sheepiepalooza, they might have a different opinion of our grooming abilities! |
Is it common for a sheepie to get matted? I did miss a few weeks of brushing.....did that little bit of time make him matt so bad? Hes a year old and I'm hoping that he was just loosing his baby fur. This is not something I look forward to in the future. He had never been that matted before even when he stayed outside for awhile. Any ideas? |

I'd really suggest doing some perusing through the grooming forums. Matting is the number one grooming issue with OES. |
Oh yeah, they get matted. Bentley starts getting knots every day. I'm freaky about it, and so is he, so we groom every night.
If you really want to see a bad haircut here you go. It wasn't my fault, really, he wouldn't stand still. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. |
Hi I have one more question. I have notice by looking at alot of sheepie pics on here that my sheepies fur looks alot thinner. Is their something I can do to make his fuller? His hair was real long but not as full as the pics I've seen on this forum.
By the way how do you insert your pic with your post? |
