My 12 week oes has decided he doesnt want to sleep at night

Hey

My 12 week old sheepie has recently in the last few nights decided he wants to bark all through the night and even when i wake up and take him outside to go to the toilet or tell him off he stops until i get back into bed and get comfy again, for the first few nights i ignored him but it doesnt make a difference, he seems as if he is too hypo to sleep or something, he hasnt winged at nights at all since i got him until now

any ideas why he might be doing this?

thanks, Jared

He's just being a puppy. My guy started the night time insanity at that age too after a few good nights. Where is he sleeping? can you bring him closer to you?
He Sleeps in the laundry which is at the other side of the house, im mainly confused why he just started doing it, ive had him here for 4 weeks and he just started lol
Barking like that is a sign of stress. I would think that it just started up because he is getting mature enough to notice that he is alone, and what that means to him. He is not with his favourite person.

When dogs bond they REALLY bond, so this is actually a good thing. He acknowledges that you exist, and he is wanting to be with you...not all alone in the laundry room. The only way he can express himself is by barking to let you know how unhappy he is.

I would bet that if he was in your room with you, your nights would be a lot quieter....
Hi just wanted to say welcome to the forum from another Aussie.
He may just be old enough now to realize he doesn't
know where you are. IMHO just stick to your guns and
don't give in - as long as all his needs are met. Also
you might try a couple short play or walk sessions shortly
before bedtime to help him relax and be tired.
Ain't the puppy days fun! Eventually he will catch on.

Good luck

yeh after thinking about it, im thinking it might be that he has just started to bond with me because he follows me everywhere now when he didnt used to,

Im going to try and see how he goes in the laundry a bit longer before he moves into my room
George did this and barked and howled all night. Because we could hear him we let him into our room. (he was in the room below our bedroom so it got unbearable) He was about 12 weeks at the time too

He started to sleep right beside the bed but now he sleeps on the bathroom floor which is away from our room (and cool) but he knows he can come back if he wants to!

He just sleeps and then wanders about a bit through the night and (touch wood) he has never been naughty through the night he has always just been happy to be with us!

yeh i wouldnt mind it if he would just lay there but i dont know if he will destroy stuff in the room, i might try putting the baby gate on my ensuite door so he cant roam and that way he will still be near me, because i dont think ignoring him is going to make him stop barking :?
George did destroy stuff when he was on his own but never bothered through the night when we were there even if we are asleep. If he gets bored he plays with his toys (all noise free at night!!)

yeh i might put the squeaky toys away at night.. i can imagine he would make a lot of noise on purpose haha
I tried putting him in my ensuite last night!! didnt hear a noise from him at all, went reallly good now i can get some sleep
Just incase he starts up again...When we first got Wilbur, we kept him in the large bathroom for a good month and then suddenly, the barking started and the POUNDING at the door. We, too, tried keeping him in our ensuite at night behind a baby gate thinking that he needed to see us. That made him restless all night. Brought him down to the kitchen and blocked off the entrance with a baby gate. That did the trick. I think he just hated feeling 'blocked in' by the closed door and the ensuite was probably too small for him. He stills sleeps in the kitchen-he's 7 months old today.

im hoping he will grow out of it or something.. *hoping* when they get old enough are they usually ok to leave in the house without keeping them in a room and they wont get into anything? or is that just asking him to destroy everything?
Don't expect too much from a young pup, if he is to be left unattended it is far more safe to leave him in a crate. Give him his favorite toy and a small kong stuffed with something he really likes to keep him busy. For comfort put something in the crate that has your smell on it.

yeh i keep forgetting he is a puppy i think
Our Shaggy barked all night at 12 weeks when he was locked in a bathroom or the basement. WE quickly learned that like all babies, he needed a more secure place. WE bought a crate and put it in the library. WE give him his kong with a little peanut butter, and follow this routine every night. He now is sleeping like a baby!
We have always allowed Chauncey free roam of the house when we're home. At night he is in our bedroom. He is 19 mos old, and approximately 4 mos ago we would not crate him if we had a short errand to run. After several successful outings, we slowly increased the time. We found that when left alone he would lay by the french doors or on the sofa. We have now left him for 3-4 hours at a time and he has behaved wonderfully. The crate has been packed away for his little bother or sister.
