my puppy has five toes each on his rear feet... is that normal? it could "possibly" be a rear dewclaw but it looks much much more like a toe, unless it's going to slowly separate as he gets bigger. i just thought that was something i would have heard about while reading up on sheepies... |

That's unsual! I've never heard of that either - and I'm pretty certain that the dewclaw would look completely different and you'd be able to tell the difference.
Ask the breeder what they think and at the next Vet appointment - talk with them. I know that missing fingers/toes can sometimes be indicative of a genetic problem - not sure if the same applies with extras. (My neice was born with only 4 fingers on her left hand and they had to do additional testing to make sure everything else was okay - which Thankfully it was!). |
By the way, I laugh everytime I read the Topic of this post - "5 toes on rear?" - I couldn't imagine what was coming next! That would be a "rear" that was even harder to clean than the typical sheepie "rear"! |
LOL Kristen!!!! |
lol!!
well his next set of shots are in two weeks, i'll enquire then. i always pick the weirdest one of the litter!!!!!! |
Is this mystery on the inside leg or "on the floor?" In pups the dew claws may be larger than normal but don't grow whereas with the toes, they grow. In time this strange digit may simply be a dew claw.
In Great Pyrs, the double dew claws in the rear (normal) are like thumbs. The dews are more toe-like than just dews and as such are never removed. In fact the dogs will use the extra digits when climbing rocks. |
