We just went through this with our two dogs, and the method our trainer taught us has worked very well, so I'll describe it for you...although with one of yours being a tiny pup still, I dont know if this will work.
First of all, we no longer allow them to get worked up and excited right at meal time...no jumping and bouncing around while they watch me prepare their bowls. We separated their bowls as far apart as was practical, and make them both SIT, and WAIT before being told that it is OK to go to thier bowl. For the first few times it required 2 people...one to make sure the dogs SAT and WAITED while the other fixed the bowls, but now they are quite good about it! We also lead each one individually to his/her bowl, and have them SIT/WAIT again before eating. The point of all this, is to impress on them that YOU are the one who decides who eats when/what...NOT them. Our dogs had started to think the whole thing was up for negotiation! I hope this helps! |
Thanks I will try that and it is the older one that is having the problems so I know the sit and wait thing will at least work for him. |
