Cat with seizures

Has anyone ever had any experience with seizures in a cat?

Our 8yr old cat had her first seizure about a year ago and then she didn't have another for several months. We talked to the vet and they basically said to track her episodes..when, how long, etc. It was nearly impossible because she didn't have them regularly and they seemed to happen in the middle of the night. So unless the dogs would hear her and bark we would have no idea. When the seizures seemed to be more frequent we took her in to be examined.

Basically, since she is only having them once or twice a month (sometimes less) and the entire episode lasts literally a minute or two from beginning to end (walking around like nothing happened), our vet recommended that we hold off on medication. She said it is so much different with cats than dogs. She said the stress of catching the cat (she's not always the most social) and giving her daily meds would stress her out more than anything.

Okay so here's the deal-- she just had the worst one ever!! I had a feeling it was coming. She always goes downstairs and has on several occasions had a seizure in her litterbox. She went into her litterbox, came out and went upstairs and then was back a few minutes later to use the litterbox again. She must have done that 5 times. She finally seemed to settle down so I went upstairs and of course that's when it happened. She made the oddest noise I have ever heard. I can't even begin to describe it but she sounded more like a chicken or a duck. I ran downstairs and sat with her and it took her longer than normal to come out of it. She always has lots of thick drool when it happens but this time she also had a BM.

I'm at a loss of what to do for her. She is a strickly indoor cat and she's very aloof. She'll come find you when she wants attention but other than that she pretty much wants to be left alone. I obviously do not want her to suffer. If meds will help I'm all for it but I have no idea how I could get them down her on a daily basis!

Any thoughts?? Has anyone been through this?? HELP!!

I'm so sorry... I don't have much advise on seizuring cats, though I will ask at work tonight. Pilling cats is very difficult and I guess depending on what would be prescribed, KBR is liquid but you would run the risk of her not eating her food because it tastes funny, then she might not eat. I know for high risk seizure dogs, owners will get a syringe with valium to use during a long, strong seizure, but I'm not sure about cats.

The litterbox thing is interesting though, does she always do that? I know that cats that are blocked do that. Is that a possibility? Then it triggered the seizure?

I hope they can figure it out for you.
:ghug: for the mean time.
We think she goes to her litterbox because she knows either a seizure is coming and she wants a safe place while she's in such a vulnerable position or she just knows something is wrong/different with her body. That was the vets guess and it does make sense. My initial thought was something was wrong with her litterbox/litter and it was causing the seizures.
I see the last post for this is in 07, I hope your cat is still with us. My cat also has seizures and has been having them in a similar fashion for a year now.

Two things...i've been reading that diet makes a difference so i'm going to try Dick Van Patten's "Natural Balance" for cats. Natural Balance is a super premium food. My dog had issues and is now on the dog forumla for alergies and is great now, so i'm hoping it will do the same for my cat. Also, if you can, get to your cat as soon as possible when they're having a seizure and hold them snug making sure to cup their head and hold them as still as possible. I have found that this reduces the recovery tim and severity.

Hope this helps some.
hi there sorry to hear about your cat, my cat has the same thing i was hoping it would go away, they said it could be the diet . the other day she bit her little tongue i felt to bad i took her to the vet he just gave her the drug med phenobarbital but i don't think i want to give her that it's just going to make her sleepy so i massage her neck when i see she's going to have one it seems to go away. maybe your cat is going to the litterbox because it causes there body to loose some of it's functions like the bm or urinating without there saying. if you find a cure let me know hope this helps some. :?
Our cat Khobi had a seizure from his kidney failure. He was an elderly cat, and it is totally different from what your kitty is going through.

But, I have to tell you, it was the most disburbing thing I have ever witnessed. I felt totally helpless.

So, this isn't really to give you advice, its just to let you know, that I know what you are feeling. And..I'm sorry.

I'll say a prayer for your kitty.
I hope your kitty is doing better. My sister's middle aged cat had her first seizure a few days ago in the middle of the night. She took Kitty to the vet, where she spent the next day and night happy and playful. When Leigh Ann picked her up, she was her normal self, but had another seizure last night. From what I have been reading, there are many causes for seizures. Apparently, it is quite normal for seizing kitties to pee, poop, and/or drool. My sister's vet and all the articles I've read say during a grand mal seizure, your cat is not in pain. It is recommended that you don't touch your cat until the seizure is done and then pet gently and talk gently.

It seems the food-especially dry-can be the culprit sometimes.

If your fluffy angel is prescribed a pill, try this: break the pill into very small bits and hide them in treats. I have to do this for my little angel everyday. She won't eat a large chunk of pill in a treat but the little bits go down joyfully!

Also, more kitty meds are coming in liquid form that you put on the kitty's scruff-back of neck. VERY WONDERFUL. Ask your vet.

I will offer up a prayer to St. Francis for your princess.
My cat has also had seizures lately. The first one was in February. I thought he was choking on a piece of food because he was sitting up and pawing at his mouth. He was drooling, and when I picked him up, he pooped and peed everywhere. We smacked him on the back a couple of times, and picked him up right under the ribs and eventually he stopped. When he was done, he walked around meowing at us, either disoriented, or thanking us.

Then in April, he had another that I didn't know about, but my friend walked into my bedroom, where this always happens, and saw the poop on the floor. Im not sure how bad this one was.

The today, my husband called me and said he woke up and saw him drooling and twitching. Eventually he started rolling on the floor. My other cat tried to hold him down and help him, and my husband held him down and it eventually went away. Again, he was walking around meowing.

A co-worker said she had a friend whos cat would hold the other one down during a seizure, and turns out that the vet visit found that the cat was severely diabetic. I'm not sure if it's just seizures or diabetes but it is really scary. I don't really have the money to take him to the vet, because the blood work is SO expensive, but I am thinking about taking him anyways. Will let you know what they discover after I take him. Hope he's ok. Diabetes with seizures also mentioned vomiting, which he has been doing for about a week now. And I cannot afford insulin.

After doing some research, I also found that cats do not swallow their tongues during seizures, unlike humans, and that this may be an epileptic seizure which is not curable.

It is a really scary situation and it really does make you feel helpless. I feel so bad for him.
When we got our Ellipsis he had chronic seizures. He had a head injury when he was a kitten before we had him. We had to give him 1/2 tablet of valium twice daily. We would crush the pill into his food and he would eat it without a problem. He had the medication till he was 10 months old. That is when our vet discontinued the medication.

He has had a seizure once every six months or so. He disappears and when we find him, he looks as though he is terrified, as though we were going to beat him. It takes several days for him to recover and in the meantime he doesn't eat or drink, he just hides.

If the seizures are becoming more frequent, I would see if the vet would prescribe some medication for you.
Frightening to imagine my little girl thrashing about by her litter box which is kept in the bath tub. My husband called me at work & said she had an epileptic fit,had urinated on herself during it. was frothing at the mouth and that he got us an appointment at the vets. 2 days earlier she was salivating & just wasn't herself so I took her to the vet. She checked out fine & yesterday the vet called to let me know her blood work looked good, then today a seizure. Doing more tests on her tonight for thyroid and organ functions & he recommended drugs to perhaps block the seizures over the weekend. ( This will also help calm my husbands fears of her urinating inappropriately. ) I will be at work over the weekend so I need both of them to be okay. On 1 hand you read its rare for cats to have seizures but then I read several posts and it doesn't seem all that rare. I needed to say something about this episode for my cat is my baby & these tests are so expensive. Hopefully all will be well.
I'm not sure what to say. Several hours ago, my cat I heard him throw up as I assumed it was a typical hair ball I went to go clean it up and as I walked toward him in the other room, he just fell on his side. Did not move. His belly felt very tight. I assumed he was choking because i thought or i saw that he wasnt breathing. Honestly, i thought he was dead. I kept yelling for my mother and she had picked him up patting him on back and I wanted to look in his mouth, but as I tried. His teeth about went right into my fingers. This lasted about 40sec. I THINK!!! From all that trama that I was feeling, Im not to sure on every detail. Ive been reading all night its now 330am and this happened 5 hrs ago. I now can't sleep. I'm very terrified that it will happen again and I wont be awake to help him. I plan on taking my 6 yr old male cat to the vet at 730 to see what they say. maybe if i find anything i can let you guys know. he's never done this before. he does only have one eye and in the one eye he has, its got catarax. so, a tech mentioned from the emerg. vet that i did not go to, since it cost 100.00 just to walk in the door. that its a possibility that he could have a brain tumor. I hope not. Please keep me in ur prayers. My 3 cats, are my children, my love, my life, and loosing one... means loosing yourself! If anyone has any comforting words please let me know. this is my first one. honestly it may not have been, but from everything i read tonight and the neighbor tech i have they mentioned it was all signs of a seizure. just without drool nor did he pee or poop. he just laid there, " dead as a door nail " no pun intended! acted lathargic and disoriented afterwards and stayed close to my mother for hours. now, he seems fine. eating and drinking, and hanging here beside me on the couch! i hope its just something simple! and trust me i know about the money one person mentioned in a previous post. i love my cat more than anything, but i was willing to go more than broke if i headed to the ER VET.
I hope your cat and you are doing OK
Hi,

I've had a couple animals that seized and at one time worked with children in Elementary School that seized. I ended up getting certified in seizure management as a result.

I think the most important thing to remember is while it looks so awful not to panic and remove things out of the way if which they can injure themselves. Don't try to restrain and comfort once it's over as they are disoriented.

Most people and animals may also soil themselves while it was happening. I'm so impressed your kitty goes to the litter box to seize. WOW!

If the cat is diabetic it will probably need daily injections but once shown how to do it ..it's very simple. Pills are also available depending on the cause of the seizure.

Good luck with kitty!

Marianne
My cat had seizures. We went to the vet to do blood work- not cheap but necessary. Those all came back okay so we did a few more. All normal. She takes 7.5 grams of phenobarbitol 2 times a day in 1/2 of a pill pocket by greenies. She thinks it is a treat. At first she was lethargic but is now her ususal self. I think it affects her sense of smell but cat food is real stinky anyway. She will be going for more blood tests in a month or so (6 months) to be certain the drug isn't causing any problems. She has not had any more seizures since July. I hope this helps any one out there. Bless our little beasties.
Hi, I also have a cat that has been having seizures in her litter box, my devon rex is about 7/8 years of age I have 3 devon rexs one a year older and 1 a year younger and have never experienced this before. A couple of months ago my cat was Making so much noise in the litter box scratching like mad then all of a sudden there was a banging noice in the litter box, i removed the lid as i use the boxed toilet type only to find my poor cat lying on her side scratching sideways? i took her out layed her on her side and talked and stroked her eventually she came round whilst i wiped her face with warm damp cloth as she lay in the recovery position.

I thought it was the litter liners i use in her litter box so stopped using these? again the same happened this moring paws n claws bleeding as she has been scratching eraticly, always takes her a while to come round and stands still doesnt knjow where she is or who any one is? seems in shock :( eventually she is fine running around very hungry & happy, after reading everyones stories its clear to see the litterbox is somewhere they feel safe and thats why they go in there, puts my mind at rest. thank you Andrea x
Our baby is one of 7 healthy babies..none of his brothers or sisters have any problems..and until he turned 2 Jessie James our little outlaw didn't either...he had his first seizure, his legs curled up, his jaws locked, his eyes were as big as saucers..he didn't blink...when it was over he let out the most heartbreaking cry..we had no idea what was happening. I scooped him up fearing we were losing our Jess..when he let out his cry I handed him to my partner with shaking hands and cried..Jess paced the floor when it was over, he acted as if he was looking for something..four weeks later he had another one, this time he drooled along with the other symptoms, it lasted maybe 2 mins. and because we held and comforted him he recovered quickly..two weeks later he had yet another one, by then we cut out all seafood...after his third seizure we decided to feed him all natural catfood..so no seafood and nothing with preservatives or additives...for four weeks Jess seemed happy, healthy and full of weewee and vinager..then he had another seizure..this one was very different..his legs didn't curl up, his body wasn't rigid like before, his jaws didn't lock, matter of fact his mouth was open the entire time, he did drool more, but he made mewing sounds during the seizure..his eyes were huge, but he kept his gaze fixed on me, his eyes followed me everywhere looking for reassurance which I gladly gave him, and when the seizure ended he cried and held onto my partner...for about 2 minutes he wanted to be loved on and held, he refused to let her put him down..then he recovered and he was eager to move around..he stetched, cleaned himself and gave us a what's happening look...yes, this last seizure wasn't as bad as the others and he recovered alot faster..we are in hopes this is the beginning of the end of Jessies seizures!!
