Graduation gift for a man

I am having the hardest time figuring out what to get my husband for graduation. He wants a really expensive watch, which I'd love to get for him, but can't. I want to get him something thoughtful and also something that he will have for a long time. I also want it to be potentially useful. I don't want to get him cufflinks or a money clip or man jewelry. Any ideas?

OR

I am thinking of buying my husband a new camera for graduation, since he said throughout our trip that he needs a new camera. I don't know much about cameras, though. I would want a digital, but don't know if he only wants the smaller ones that can fit into pockets, rather than the ones with big zoom lenses. Any tips on buying a good digital camera?

Maybe...but I can't remember what! What was it? I think people said something like a nice stethescope, but I didn't like that. I don't really want something medical-related, either.

The briefcase idea isn't so good since he's going to be a resident, so he won't have to have a briefcase. I think I'll let him get his own palm pilot (they might have to have a specific brand for the hospital).

You're not alone :D
There are some great watches out there that are unbelievable for what you get for the money. If you had a price range I could give you my thoughts.
If he is going to be a resident get him a 3 year supply of Red Bull and Powerbars.

Try 5 years! He chose a long specialty!

See, the thing with the watches is that he wants some $5000 watches and I couldn't get him any NEAR that amount, and I don't know if he wants something in between, ya know?
My vote is for a Littman Cardioscope then, they do cost about $300 but mine was given to me for a graduation gift and I've had it over 20 years.
no, i called my girlfriend who is a doctor in town and then i posted it in the chat room...but i cant remember either what she came up with.....i thought you were writing it all down steph...

and people get your minds out of the gutter! 8O

No, no, no! While making a point in rounds he'll raise his hand and
accidently smash it into the siderail of the bed.
Unless he has had the watch repairology rotation, it'll be a total loss.

Save the expensive watch for wearing it at home and
special occassions.
The younger docs at our hospital seem to really be into the palm pilots. They have TONS of medical reference stuff loaded into them. Ours don't need to be a certain kind.
How about an ipod or another MP3 player? Steve is really into the one we have. I may buy him something better for his birthday which is on May 12 :D

He already has an ipod and really won't have time for it probably next year anyway.

This is so hard. I want to get him something with the traditional meaning and value of a gift like a watch or cufflinks, or something that can be engraved, yet at the same time have it be something useful or interesting that he'll actually like...
