ear question

Hi everyone,

My husband and I have been noticing Annabelle having a lot to with her ears and shaking her head all day, could this be sign of an infection? I have looked and I don't see any thing that alarms me on sight, but she seems to have something going on in there. We are planning on taking in Marie anyway, so it is no problem for her to tag along, but just wanted any input on ear problems. I do the cleaning and hair removal myself so it isn't a question of cleanliness. THanks for your input, Stormi, Annabelle, and her ears. LOL

Could it be ear mites? When you clean her ears has any of the wax looked darker than usual?
Or, as you say, it may be an infection, or if she has had a bath recently it could be water in her ears?
Has she been groomed/shaved recently? Sometimes if the "clippers" get too hot - they can burn the skin (like a razor burn) and this can result in shaking of the head. Please have it checked - because problems can result from the shaking (hematomas can develop)!
Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies! She has had a bath and the cotton balls fell out during the bath, so water could be an issue. Neither of the dogs have been clipped, so that wouldn't be it. I haven't noticed any of the other animals having much to do with the ears, so I wouldln't think ear mites, but with Marie getting ready to have babies, I want to make sure there are nothing that could put her or her babies at risk......SO Annabelle is going to have to escort Miss Marie to her appointment.
She seems to be getting ready to go into her second heat cycle so her behavior is changing.....not to mention Jack. LOL
Oh, and yes when I clean ears the ear wax is a very dark brown color, but then again so is Jacks, so I have never paid much attention to the color. What would that indicate? They are getting very good at having ears groomed and I have always been patient and gentle with them. I am a big worrier to begin with. LOL Anyway, when we find out something from the vet about Annie and Miss Marie we will pass on the news. Again, thanks for the replies. Stormi and co.
Dark brown usually indicates mites or an infection... it is really easy to treat though. It may be normal for them though... has it always been that color or have you noticed it getting darker over time? With regular cleaning if there are mites you may have been keeping it in check so that it wasn't bothering them much... hopefully it's nothing though!
:)
Max had an issue with his ears a few weeks ago. At first it started with one ear and I thought it was a dark blood. So we cleaned his ears, etc. then it showed up in his other ear. It was blackish red. A friend said it might be mites, so I took Max to the vet. And the vet said it was caused by water etc. He hasn't been swiming, but he plays in the hose and sprinkler. The vet gave me some meds and they cleared up in a few days.
Thanks Shelly. We made an appointment with our vet for Saturday. I think also it might be water. Usually with mites, if one pet has it....they all have it. I like the sound of it clearing up quickly, that is always a plus.....I will update this after the appointment and let you all know how Annabelle is doing. She hasn't had anything to do with her ears today and has wanted to sleep most of the day. LOL

Hi Stormi, Oreo is having a similar problem after being groomed. There is a product called Swimmers Ear, the ingredients are those of a cleaner I could only get from my vet. I compared the two one day as when my kids were kids they went to the lake every day. The purpose of swimmers Ear is to dry up and water that could lead to a problem. I also use the medicated powder for dog ears. I hope it is only water in the ear. Dolores
