Anyone use doggie doors. Do you have recommendations? |

I have one from outside into garage. That way I still have some security control for entrace into the house.
If I had my "druthers" now, I'd have the one that goes into the sliding door so I could control the use and security. Actually I have a one way door now from the house. Jack. He opens the storm door (If I have the interior door open) by himself (and anyone quick enough to follow) but hasn't figured out how to get back in. |
We had a doggie door in the sliding patio screen door. It was for our cocker spaniel and boy did he love it. We now we have Angus who is 92lbs. and used to fit through the door but outgrew it fast. My husband adapted another door from and old window screen and now he too has his doggie door and he is quite happy with the situation. On a nice day the door is open for him all day and he comes in and out a million times a day. We tried to buy a bigger door like the originial door but they don't come any bigger and we enjoyed having the door for the dog to come and go so we just knew we had to be inventive and it worked. I could post a picture if anyone wants to see it. |
Laika is driving me nuts! I have a bell that she rings and I am starting to feel like a servant! She doesn't just want to go for potty breaks most times just because... |

I have a dog door for my dogs and both the dogs and I love it. They can have access to their yard 24/7. |
I also was looking into a doggie door, but what size do I order large or extra large. My dog is only 6 months. I have seen ones that slide open, up and down when they go near it. Thay have to be wearing a certain type of collar for it to work. But it is pricey. |
I have a Petsafe Ultimate Pet Door http://www.petco.com/Shop/petco_Product ... 2-_-488771
in Extra Large. It was the best investment ever!!! |
we took a window and put freezer plastic on the window so when i want it open i open the window and they jump out.. they learned in a day to use it |
I have the "large" dog door. I am not sure if different manufacturers sizes will vary but all the doors I looked out will tell you on the box, what size for the dog's weight and breed. My "large" dog door is big enough for my Great Pyrenees to go thru. They also had an "extra large" which is more for Great Danes, etc. |
I love having our doggie doors. The first one we have is panel with the doggie door in it, that is made for the sliding glass door we have in our kitchen. The second doggie door we have is from the sunroom to the outside which is built right into the screen enclosure next to the screen door. Both are for large size dogs. We bought them both at Home Depot and my husband enstalled them both.
When we adopted Violet (OES) 4 yrs ago, when she was 9mts old, I just showed her how it worked a few times and she took to it right away. It gave her all the freedom she wanted in going and playing in the backyard or potty time. When I adopted China (Aussie Shepherd) at 8 wks she also learned very quickly how to use it. Violet showed her and I put her through it a few times and before we knew it, she was using it without a problem. I love having the doggie doors. It allows the girls to go out in the backyard whenever they want. Both doors have slidders to close the doors if so desired. |

we put a doggie door in our storm door we bought @ lowes or u can find them @homedepot its great ! we also had a unwanted visitor but our three sheppies would not let him move till the police arrived ! THEY ARE VERY PROTECTIVE SHEEPIES SMOKEY SPARKEY & BRUSCHI ! GOOD LUCK |
I have a dog door just on my screen door for security purposes. My suggestion: if you're between large and extra large, go for the big one just in case you ever get another dog that may need it. I thought large would be fine for Clyde but he also became extra large. Clyde can do large but Bear gets stuck every now and then. We're gonna tear ours out this summer and get the giant one. |
I bet I will see the large one for sale on eBark later...!
Or on oesBay. |
I forgot I posted this thread need to remember to press the watch button. Well I was looking in a pet store and I thought large because it says up too 100 lbs. and she is only 60 lbs. but the girl said she needs a extra large because she is so tall. |
Juno is our 5th OES and I don't know what I was thinking that I never put one in before. What a difference not to be at their beck and call, especially good since we both work, no messes in the house. I do worry some about the pool so we are having lessons this week end to teach him where the steps are.
We miss little Abby but life does go on full speed ahead with Mr. Juno. |
I'm getting a dog door in a few weeks looking at petsafe ultimate xlarge. Wondering how it keeps cold out in the winter or if there is a different one. I live in Alberta Canada. |
Our dog door exits from the family room into a protected spot on the patio but strong storm winds have been a problem and can still blow it open on occasion. Ther is a draft around the flap. When it gets really cold -20, I know that's a warm spring in Alberta, has also been a problem. I've thought of putting a second door flap on the other side of the entrance. |

I have that one It has two flaps, one open frame flap with rubber (or whatever it is made of) all around the edges of the door on the inside. It is attached by screws at the top and magnets allow it to open at the bottom and it also magnetically attaches around the outer frame to keep drafts out and one large flap that attaches to that on the outside. I live in the Desert, so we get major weather changes here and it has held up really well for the past 3 yrs we've had it. Here is a picture of our door from the inside. With my husbands added extra security for when we got on vacation. http://photos.oes.org/displayimage.php?pos=-4968 Note: I put the link so you can see the larger size original photo. |
