I am looking for some advice. My 2 year old dog has developed a strange clicking noise that ocasionally comes from the hips. I have had him checked by the vet (but not x-rayed yet) He does not seem to be in any pain at all and is very active and bouncy, but the noise worries me. Has anyone experienced this, should I be worried about the onset of hip displacia ? |

First of all, welcome to the forum! It's a great place to meet new friends who have at least one thing in common! It is phenomenal the amount of information that has been pooled together here, experiences from all members contribute to a growing base of knowledge.
I would be concerned, yes. I would ask your vet to be more thorough in his check up, or maybe get another vet? They should find out the cause and treat it appropriately. The sooner the better, as if there is inflammation it can eventually cause pain and damage. |
Your Vet should do an X-Ray to confirm that there isn't hip dysplasia and/or dislocation. It may be nothing - but your better off finding out for sure - when he's still young enough for something to be done about it!

Just for a positive note; my younger pup has this clicking noise also. Our vet checked him over and she couldn't pull his hips out at all and his x-rays came out clear. You should get him checked just to be sure though. Thought you may be able to use an encouraging voice, that noise scared me. |
Adequate Glu/Chon/MSM supplementation will likely eliminate the clicking even if there is some dysplasia. This will lube the joints and ease inflammation and pain. If you haven't already started, it can take 2-4 weeks to build up in the system and show results. Don't neglect x-rays, so you know what you're dealing with.
My 9 yr old male doesn't click anymore and he has mild dysplasia. |
Hi there,
I have a 13 year old sheepie, our vet was never very helpful to us (that's not to say yours isn't) but i think you should be concerned, maybe you've caught something early......the meds that were recommended to you are a good idea. |
My vet recommended a product called SynoviG. This is a joint supplement and comes in powdered or capsule form, there are also different kinds. A trip to your vet should come first and s/he can give you further info. This is also avaliable on line. |
I just wanted to mention something about the Glu/Chon/MSM. I had some trouble with my knees and my doctor recommended that I take just a straight Glucosamine suppliment because he had read studies that the chondritan (sp?) portion can build up as plax in a human brain and cause earlier Alzheimers.
I don't mean to startle....just wanted to put this out there. I take the straight Glucosamine and it has helped me a lot. |
baily_m,
Welcome to the forum! I would definitely insist that your vet x-ray your dog to either confirm or rule out hip dysplasia. In another post, Sheepdog Marine, who has 2 7 month old pups, heard the same clicking in his dogs and the x-rays verified that both have HD. Severe enough for the vet to recommend corrective surgery. I have an 11 year old dog who had surgery for HD on her left hip last fall, and I can tell you it's not fun! Only wish our original vet had suggested checking for it earlier so that we may have been able to treat it better. Needless to say, that vet is no longer our vet. Better safe than sorry! Baily m,
Welcome to the forum. As mentioned above, we have two pups, each with different levels of HD. Our vet recommended we do nothing except limit their exercise some until they see the orthopedic surgeon on March 14. They are healing from being spayed/neutured right now. Our boy, Bailey had the hip click and X rays confirmed he has severe HD, one hip is much worse than the other. So now we wait. He never seems to be in pain, I just hate hearing the clicking sound as I know what it is now. Maybe you will get lucky and it won't be a big deal. I am still learning about HD, but will post our findings on the 14th. Surgery, while our last option, may prove helpful while they are under ten months old. We shall see. Good Luck! Eric |
