WOW - I can see how this would be a good idea. Personally, I would never put anything 'soil-able' in a crate, because the main idea behind crate training is that the puppy recognizes the crate as his home so doesn't want to soil it. However, grass sod makes way more sense to me than newspaper in other areas - neat suggestion! |
I read the same book, and recommend it often. The routine for crate training/house training was very successful for us.
I believe the sod is recommended when setting up a potty area for the puppy. According to the book, this is for "long-term confinement" - when the puppy will be alone longer than she can possibly hold it. I don't think the potty area is supposed to be in the crate, I thought the puppy was to have a larger area for "long-term confinement" so the potty area is separate from play and rest area. It has been awhile since I've read the book though. We didn't set up a potty area indoors (no puppy pads, no sod, etc.). I wasn't crazy about the idea of allowing a puppy to go inside. We just never left him home alone longer than he could hold it. I took a week's vacation to work on house training and help him adjust to his new home. Then I would come home from work at lunchtime for Barkley's potty break, lunch and 2nd potty break before heading back to work. At 9 weeks he was able to hold it for 4 hours in the crate.... but I think that was his limit. Hope that helps. |
