I've been reading the forum for the past few weeks to help prepare myself for Wally and have found it to be very helpful! I have a few basic questions about raising an OES pup. 1. How many times do puppies usually poop a day? Wally eats 1 cup of dry puppy food about 3 times a day, but has only been pooping only 2 times a day: early in the morning and during dinner time. Also, he wakes us up about every 2 hours at night to pee Is this normal? When can we expect to sleep through the night again!? 2. He gets the hiccups a lot. Is there anything that causes this? 3. How much exercise do little pups need? Wally is pretty good on a leash so far, not pulling or sniffing too much. I want to make sure that we don't over exercise him right away. 4. One more thing... Wally loves wood chips and mulch! Are these things bad for him? We are constantly taking things out of his mouth outside. Thanks for any advice or suggestions!! We love our new pup! |

Welcome Wally and family!
Wally sure is cute. What a big fellow as well. I have a puppy around the same age as Wally,(she is dog #4 in our house) she eats about the same amount of food but she will poop on average between 2 - 5 times a day. Some days she finishes all her food and some days she doesn't. Scarlet might wake up once a night to pee, we have had her a week now and usually she is in bed for the night around 10:30pm and won't wake until about 4-5am, I take her out for potty, just a 'good girl 'if she goes and then its back to bed, no fuss, no playtime... Scarlet also gets the hiccups a lot....I think all puppies do...nothing to worry about. As far as excercise...Once Scarlet gets tired...she just flops and there is no more playing and that is when I put her back in her crate for a nap. Wood chips and mulch...please stop Wally from chewing these. Some are poisonous to dogs and at the very least it will give him diahhrea. So glad you joined and we look forward to hearing more Wally stories... and of course pictures! |
Welcome t the Forum and congrads on your new little one! He's so cute in the picture and yes, does look like a big boy!
At 9 weeks old, going every two hour is normal...Do you crate him? He may last a little longer during the night if crated. But up until a few months old, puppies have little control over their bladder. They have really no conception of "holding" it so getting him out every two hours is a good idea. Mine is five months now and sleeps through the night with no problem but during the day he goes out every three hours or so. At night, their little bodies slow down s they can hold it longer but as soon as they awake, its best to rush them outside...I used t carry mine out. Mine also poops about four or five times still...But if you are using a good food and the stool is solid and not too hard, I woulnd't worry about it. Enjoy this time...Its tiring but they grow sooo fast and then this puppyhood is just a memory! Good luck. |
Congratulations on your new puppy! He looks adorable in the picture.
Bingley pooped about 3-4 times a day at that age, but I think it depends on what you're feeding him. And if he seems ok and the vet says he's fine I would be happy with the situation!!! We also fed three times a day, so that could make a big difference, too. Bingley got hiccups all the time! I forgot about it until you mentioned it. He doesn't do it anymore (10 months old) so maybe yours will outgrow it as well! As far as exercise, he'll tell you. I was cautioned a lot not to push exercise because they are growing so quickly at that age. If he wants to romp I wouldn't stop him but if he wants to lay I would encourage that as well. We have wood chips all over our area and I have been told that they are extremely hazardous. Why don't you offer him a big long carrot to gnaw on when you go outside? They are a fun toy and very good for teething puppies. Plus, if it's an outside treat he won't get orange carrot gop all over your carpet - not that we have any . . . |
Welcome, I don't have any puppy advice for you as I have never had an OES as a puppy. Both of mine were rescues.
Just wanted to welcome you and congratulate you on your new pup. |
Hi Wally, Hi Family Member!
Welcome! |
Hi,
Pups are usually good for about an hour per month old for peeing with unrestricted water. So Walley is good for about 3 hours on average. It will be a while till he's old enough to hold it all night. Zach |
Your baby Wally is a cutie. Welcome! |
That pic is too cute! |
Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new puppy. I cant remember how old Obe was before he slept all night without having to be let out. I know he was potty trained at 4 months. So he was definitely sleeping all night at that point. He would and still does wake up around 6 a.m. and wants out (better than my alarm clock). I did use a crate when he was young so that helped him a bit. He also got the hiccups but out grew them (8 1/2 month nows). I never had to worry about wood chips but Obe loves to grab a stick and prance around. I would not let him chew on them based on what other members have said. I did the same with the carrot and teething. You can even freeze them and they will last a little longer, but do so outside if you have carpet. |
Thanks everyone for your tips and advice!!!
Wally is such a doll! He is extremely mellow for a puppy. He is very calm around other people and dogs and doesn't really jump around unless he is instigated. We are crate training him and he has stopped crying almost every time we put him in the crate. He even let me sleep through the night (11pm-7am) the past 2 nights! He still has an obsession with woodchips and mulch. Our entire backyard is woodchips so there is really no way around them. We live in the woods so there is no way we can plant grass out there. I constantly have my eye on him to make sure he is not eating them. Sometimes it distracts him from doing his business! Does anyone know if OES are generally mellow dogs? Maybe Wally is going to break of out his shell and start acting like a puppy soon... but I'm definitely not complaining! Thanks for all your doggy stories. I have found this forum to be very helpful and informative!! |

LOL! Welcome from St. Louis! They are definitely NOT mellow!!! My son and I have a running joke about that. When we got our previous OES Mopsy back in 1995 my mom said to us "She is so calm. Muffy was so hyper." Muffy was my childhood OES but let me tell you my mother spoke too soon. Anytime Mopsy was acting wild and crazy my son and I would look at each other and laugh about her grandma calling her "calm". I even made the mistake of thinking the same thing about my current sheepie, Harry but he has proven to be a typical goofy OES. And I am forever grateful that he is. Basically give it a little time - and once your puppy feels confident in his new surroundings you will see that most sheepdogs are not mellow! By the way Wally is adorable! |
Welcome Wally! What a cutie! We just went through the getting a puppy, and like Sheepie Mommy said, Wally will get much more active and curious once he gets used to his environment and you. Have fun, they don't stay little long! |
Welcome to the forum!! Wally is adorable! Is that one blue eye I see, or does he have both eyes blue?
MELLOW?? Not an adjective I've ever used with any of my sheepies! Just the total opposite, in fact!! Please keep Wally from chewing on the mulch and wood chips. The mulch will have color on it and may have been treated with other chemicals in the processing, very poisonous for him to eat. And even if the wood chips are just ground up trees from your own property, if they are small they can get stuck in his intestines very easily. Good luck with your new baby!! |
Our Chewie is very calm.
His breeder can't believe how laid back he is - she joked we should DNA test him, because his mom and sisters are NOT calm! |
Gorgeous Gorgeous Gorgeous! He is so cute!!
George is very laid back too. He has had his moments of madness but on the whole he is very mellow! |
