A lost Pit Bull in my back yard!

I came home from work and found a pit bull in my back yard. My son told me the dog followed him home when he walked home from school.
I opened the backyard gate hoping he will leave but it has been an hour and he doesn't want to leave.

I am scared of pit bull but this dog seems harmless. He is very scared and shivering. I don't know what to do. I can't take him in until I find his owner because I can't let my three dogs have any contact with him, not knowing his history and such.

I feel so sorry for him. So I laid down a big beach towel for him to lie on and gave him some water and a bone. I have also called Animal Control. I hope I did the right thing and I didn't cause him a bad fate of being put down in the shelter.

Did I do the right thing? Any suggestions?

You did the right thing by calling AC... even though it leaves you wondering what will become of him. Be careful with him so you don't get bit... not that he's mean but he must be very scared.

I had to do this a few months back and felt guilty too. If this boy has any tags, you can try to call the numbers on it. The big lab-mix I found had a tag from the local Humane Society so I called them (they didn't want him back ). I found out he had the same vet as my furry kids. So I called them and they gave me a number for the owner. While I waited for a return call, I took him up and down the street to see if any of the neighbors recognized him. Sad thing was the person who owned him never did return my calls. My last message said I was forced to call AC and that they had come to pick him up.

Keep him safe 'til until AC arrives. Just shut the gate and keep your kids (human and furry) indoors 'til they come. No matter what, it's so much better than being hit by a car. Thanks for watching over him.
You might also check the local lost and found ads in the newspaper or online. I got a cat back to it's original owner after she had been missing for several weeks. The people hadn't lost hope and continued to advertise in the lost and found section of the paper.

You might also check the ads over the next week or so in case someone posts a new ad that they lost their dog.
I don't want to make you feel bad at all, but please if AC has not come yet call them and tell them he is gone. Pitbulls have almost no chance of coming out of a shelter alive, and if this boy seems harmless he doesn't deserve the death sentence.

Would you be able to keep him in your backyard while I help you find a pitbull rescue in the area?
I am sure you thought of this but first check to see if he has tags or a microchip!

I will send you a pm about rescues in your area!
She ( I looked...its a she  ) doesn't has any tag on, she only has a chain link around her neck.

I most certainly do not want her be put down in the shelter. The AC people never showed up.

She has been laying against my patio glass door the whole time where she can see us in the house. My dogs take turn to check on her. She and my Retriever/St Bernard mix shared kisses on the glass door. My boy cat laid down on the other side of the glass door the whole time to keep her accompany.

I got Heather's PM. The rescue groups in the message are mostly norther California. Out of the list, San Diego is the closest one and I have already contacted them and am waiting for their reply.

My husband and son managed to lure her into the garage so I could let my dogs out to do business. I guess I could let her stay in the garage with access to the backyard tonight, so she doesnt has to sleep outside with the wind blowing.

However, I can only do these until Monday. By Monday, we are all at work, I will not be able to seperate my dogs from her while both have access to the backyard.

I am going to post some Found Lost Dog Note around the neigborhood now. Hopefully her owner will come get her.
Gigi,
Call Animal Control again to pick up the dog. It will be taken to Coachella Valley Animal Society in Thousand Palms and they do not euthanize there. They are there until they are adopted.

I have had a few strays show up here... 3 pitbulls to be exact and I have brought them all there. It is a very beautiful animal campus, very clean and really nice. For some reason the last time I called the AC guys didn't come out, so I brought the dog to them since I couldn't have this dog here, as it could have been sick.
Knowing has lazy the AC guys are I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't show up until tomorrow.

Luckily our town has use of the Coachella Valley Animal Shelter.
Palm Springs dogs go to a nasty dirty shelter, where they do euthanize.
Thanks Elissa

I am glad to hear the AS in our town is no kill. You are right, I have been there a couple of times since it opened. It is very nice and clean. Putting her there to wait for her owner or a new owner probably is way better than being stuck in my backyard or in the garage at my house.

She seems to be clean and healthy. Her owner probably is worried sick as I type.

I hope she will find a home very soon. She looks very sweet, very submissive even though she is very scare.
Just got a reply from San Diego Pit Bull Rescue Group. They told me to contact the local Humane Society... :lmt: I thought they would not want to see the pit bulls going into AS or HS??
Hi,
Can you call or take her to Coachella Valley Animal Society directly?
Did you take her picture for lost & found sites?
Petfinder has a lost & found section.
Did you notify vets in your area?
Hoping her owners find her soon!

If she is micro-chipped they will be able to find her owners immediately. If the owners are looking for her, they will find her at the shelter. :D

That is surprising, and disappointing.

I think that may be their way of first letting the shelter do their part...and if hte dog doesnt get adopted then they would step in. Hopefully she will have a microchip and can be placed back in her home with out the rescue ever having to be involved. I would imagine that they would work on getting her out if she is in danger.

Dont feel bad about sendgin her to a no kill shelter. She will find a good home if she is not claimed.
So here is the update:

Animal Control people didn't show up on Friday. So I called again on Saturday and I was told that they were off until Monday. Oh well, I kept her in our backyard and lured her into our garage whenever my dogs need to do the business. I was not totally comfortable with that because I am not sure if her poopies might carry anything harmful to my dogs.

My counter measure was to scoop them up immediately. Boy, did I have a busy weekend. This girl is a poopy machine and she made huge piles of poop 8O

I left the garage door to the back yard opened at night so she can come out to do her business when needed. Every morning, I found more holes dug up. She made big and deep holes. My lawn has about 6-7 big deep holes now which made my dogs pretty happy. They love laying on the dirt dug up

She also took out the shoes from the garage. The amazing thing is that she took out one of each pair! Never both! She is some dog, I am telling you

Anyway, my husband waited at the house this morning and the AC people finally showed up and picked her up.

Crossed my fingers she will find a good home soon.

And now...any suggestion how to repair my lawn? I tried to cover the holes but the loosen dirt made it irresistable to my dogs to dig in it again....GRRRRRRR
