thanks! |
I've heard of many sheepies living to be 15 and 16 years old. It differs through different bloodlines, and the health of the dog throughout it's life, if it has been kept up to date on vaccinations, the quality of food it has been fed, regular veterinary check ups, dental health etc... so many things can contribute to the health and longevity or lack thereof. It sounds like you are doing a great job, and just enjoy the time you have!
As long as your dog still has quality of life, then I would agree with your vet, let him be and enjoy him. If you think he is in pain or is losing major quality of life, then you will be faced with a tough decision. Welcome to the forum! I hope you'll stay and tell us more about yourself and your four leggeds! |
thank you willow, i have all 3 of them on vitiams especially MSN, the poor ol guy has an occasional accident every now and then but he's just so sweet, we call him mr lickey! he's just always been my favorite and if i have to help him up or clean up every now and then i certainly don't mind and our breeder for the goldie is against all dogs having any shots after the initial sets except for the rabies, she believes their bodies contain all they need to live a long life on, and plus they are house dogs and play in our backyard, they never leave our sight! mother hen and all so thanks for your help |
I believe (or I'm hoping anyway) that when they are ready to go - they'll let you know. If your Mr. Lickey is still enjoying life - which it seems he is - and he isn't suffering - let him continue on and hopefully he'll be around to celebrate his 14th birthday. Is he on any Arthritis/Pain Medication?
My oldest, Brittney, is 12 1/2 and is having the same problems you described (occasional accident and needs to be lifted) - knowing that the end is near - I'm taking it day by day. I won't let her suffer or become completely immobile and/or incontinent - but I'm hoping that won't happen at all. My hope is that when she's ready - she'll close her eyes and go peacefully. (I just wish that would be a long time away!) The average lifespan is 10-12 years old - but like Willowsprite said - many have lived far beyond the average. I wish they'd live forever! Kristen |
My husband's sheepdog lived unil she was 16. I agree with Stacey and Kristen, many factors contribute to their lifespan. Steve's furbaby, just went to sleep... and didn't wake up. It was on Thanksgiving, and he always thinks of her during the holidays. |
i also give him a st joseph's baby asprin at night, tomorrow, i'll write you all the vitiams etc that i have all 3 on.
thanks everyone for your help i really appreciate it! these guys are our kids! |
My first sheepie lived till 14 and a half he was put to sleep because of many medical problems and he would get worse and so we did what was best for him. Oliver my second sheepie had a nasal tumor and was put to sleep at 7 and a half years. It was a condition that is not common and it just happened. Oreo will be 3 in December. I think genetics their weight and exercise contribute to their longevity. |
Oh, I am sorry about your babies, Shaggidog. I have never heard of nasal tumors? Hope you are having fun with your sheepie! |
Thank you Marley. Losing Oliver was the most painful thing we went through he got sick a week after 9/11 and died in a month. We got Oreo because of having Olivver we did not need to be interviewed by the breeder they knew us. Oreo is Oliver's nephew so we have a bit of him too. I named all my sheepies so their initials spell D.O.G. Their call names were different. |

thanks everyone for your help i really appreciate it! these guys are our kids! You may want to talk to the Vet about a pain medication (i.e. Rimadyl, Metacam, etc.) for his arthritis! The difference it makes is incredible! It can help them maintain a more active life - which in my opinion - staying active plays a big role in a long healthy life! Kristen |
