Why is the coat wirey and what to do about puppy outgrowth ?

This my sound like a silly question but my 9 year old daughter asked this question and I am not sure if I answered correctly. I am trying to educate her and myself. Why is the OES coat wirey or rough in texture?

I thought it was because the rougher coat would protect them when droving the sheep. - Is that correct?

I could not really find an answer in my OES book.

Also Miley has brownish outgrowth at the tips of her hair. Do I need to trim this part off or will it eventually turn?

Thanks

Becky & Miley

It is supposed to be a weather proof coat. If is was soft and silky it would just get wet, all the way down to the skin.

The lighter hair tips comes from old coat, with damaged ends, and also from sun bleaching over time. You can snip off the ends all around to freshen up Miley's look. :D
Part of the standard for OES includes a description what the coat should be like.

COAT - Profuse and of good hard texture; not straight, but shaggy and free from curl. The undercoat should be a waterproof pile when not removed by grooming

So now you know why and why also an OES has a double coat, must of originated from that cold English Weather they had to endure while tending & herding their flocks.  And yes you are correct there the harsher outer coat protects them and also protects the undercoat/waterproof pile too

Always a reason why certain points on the breed is stipulated in the standard.

You can also just start tipping the ends to get rid of the pup coat a bit faster. Take just little snips off the ends as you groom him every so often with the scissors. :D

Thanks so much I knew it was part of the breed standard but the why it is was part of the breed standard was the tough part. I also appreciate the websites.

Miley gets to be my daughter's last oral report for the year and Miley is going to school as part of the demonstration. The teacher is great about letting pets in but the kids project have to educate their classmates about some aspect of the pet.

Thanks again

She can tell the class giving the dog a bath is very hard because it takes forever to get them wet :)
