Does it look like this?
It could be a hot spot. It can be caused from allergies and can be aggravated by licking, biting, chewing, etc. Definitely run her by the vet to have her take a look at it. If it smells, and it is a hot spot, it's probably abscessed. |
You mention stinky and possibly scaly... could it be seborrhea?
* Seborrhea sicca, or dry seborrhea, shows scaliness only. * Seborrhea oleosa, or oily seborrhea, has scales as well as excess oil production by the skin. It is accompanied by a malodorous, oily coat. * Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by greasiness and flaking, and is accompanied by inflammation. Some flakiness is normal, especially in some young puppies. However if your dog has excessive scaliness, it may be a sign of seborrhea. In some cases, the hair will feel greasy and have a distinctive odor. The skin may or may not appear red. In some cases, the ears may be inflamed and have excess secretions. You may see your dog scratching and licking more. If you suspect your pet has seborrhea, he should be seen by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will want to know your observations. Thanks for the replys so far. No it is not a hot spot. I know what they are. My Springers get them from time to time. It is not greasy. Like I said it is sort of like cradle cap. It's just a crusty flaky scab like thing that actually sticks to the fur more than the skin. Chris keeps it brushed out and we never noticed the smell till tonight. I commented she had "stinky butt" allready and just had a bath today. That is when she gets her bath is when I notice "stinky butt" Chris noticed as she was brushing her it was this stuff that smelled. I am thinking maybe it was smelling because of the bath and being wet because it has never smelled before when we brush it out dry.
I will keep an eye on it and make sure it don't spread. She should be going to the vet for a check up in a month or so. |
