A potty dilema!

Ok...weird and embarressing problem :?

We got young Eggbert in November, when there was already plenty of snow on the ground. He was 6 months old, and already housebroken. It NEVER occured to us till this week...but Bert appears to have decided that hes ONLY supposed to go on snow! 8O ......and he's rapidly running out of options!

He refused to poop last night, and would only pee on the one TINY bit of snow that was left  today, again, no poop, until, apparently he just couldnt hold it any longer, and went in the kitchen. (on the WHITE linolium...coincidence??)

Help?.....

Just hang out outside a little longer with him. He can't hold it forever! He'll catch on but it might take a day or so before he starts to warm up to the idea.
This may sound gross if you are one to pick up the
'logs' right away, but maybe if you put a few where
you want him to go (grass?) he'll catch on.
Just a thought

Why don't you make him a potty area?

Dig a shallow pit and fill it with white sand or other white material etc?

You need to clean it out reguarly otherwise it will stop him going but it might work. :)
We had the opposite problem this winter when we got about 8 inches of snow. Couldn't find any grass. Mojo went out and didn't know where to go. He was out there forever going round and round the yard. He finally decided on a spot but, did the same thing the next few times he went out.
Hopefully it will only take Eggbert a day or two to figure it out.
Maybe take him for a walk where there is no snow. Mojo always goes on our walks, even if he just did his business in the back yard.
Actually I have that problem to a lesser degree with TY, he ONLY wants to pee in the snow. Our snow is starting to melt and this morning when I took him out he literally jumped from snow patch to snow patch (prissy thing doesn't want his feet to touch the ground  )

As Jill said, be persistent and hopefully he'll get it!!
Could you try ice? Maybe if you bring some cubes out and put them on teh grass he'd appreciate it?! Poor baby!

I agree with what an earlier poster said with regard to leaving the poop and relocating it to a grassy area. Maybe if he smells his scent on the grassy area he will think he has already gone there once.

Also, keep him outside for an extended period of time to conduct his business, eventually he will poop. Fred had the opposite problem and didn't want to go on the snow. These guys need to meet one another.
snow-cone machine?

Try walking him around for awhile and he will probably go eventually. When he does go praise him and give him a little treat. It seems like if they walk for long enough they can't help but go :D
Dancer did the exact same thing.... and then she preferred linoleum after the snow was gone.
It took forever to retrain her, and I would definitely do it different if it happened again.
I would re crate train, from scratch, as if he were a puppy again. It should only take a few days to re set his patterns and preferences.
Thanks for all the good advise folks! :D

Putting poo out there is'nt such a good idea, for us, as my sweet baby is a POOP EATER 8O ...and a very fast and efficient one, at that!

He will go on walks (NOTHING in doggie-life, is so thrilling as pooping in the WOODS!)

I guess we are going to have to start back from scratch...and here I was, all smug about having gotten a pre-housetrained pup!

Sorry not much help there as we never ever really experience dogs and snow here. Just had to laugh at the comment above. I can see slurpys spread in an area for the dog to go. I wonder what flavour he needs in snow cones to entice him?

Thanks for the laugh Amanda P.
Whew! :phew: apparently (knock on wood) it was a temporary case of potty-confusion! I just took him out for his afternoon potty-break, and after a fairly short period of running around, looking vainly for snow....he did his business as usual. 8)

Good news!!!
Thank goodness!!! Nothing is worse than dealing with potty issues!!!
OMG - we went through the same thing earlier this spring!!
The vanishing snow did create a dilemna here too.
YAY thank goodness
