How do you find a good groomer?

We have always done all of Callie's grooming ourselves (she is 2 1/2), but lately I have been tossing around the idea of taking her to a groomer. The last haircut I gave her did not look as nice as I would have liked (probably b/c I was in a hurry the night before we left for vacation). I think it would be nice for her to get a professional touch up now to even out her hair as it is growing out and just to make her all fresh and beautiful.
But I have heard so many groomer horror stories that I am a little bit afraid to even consider it. I have zero experience with groomers, so what should I look for / ask when trying to find a good one?

word of mouth is a huge help.
when they can take you a few days after you call, for me, it's almost always a big signal that they're not the most popular in the area.

when they don't require you to bring in proof of rabies or bordetella shots, i run.

but i guess trial and error is what works the best because in my experience... in every town and state I have been to, I have tried almost EVERYONE in my area and surrounding area... and realized most people just don't know how to do our dog. They try to shape them like poodles. The groomer is excellent with breeds they always have, but never rare breeds.

i bet i would have more luck if i went to a groomer in a big city, but no one in my town(s) has an OES.

expectations and what you think is cute would make a difference to. i would trust most of the groomers here to shave or clip down to 2 inches. anything more detailed is where i run into problems.
I actually went personally without my dog to two groomers over the weekend. I spoke with the groomer personally, told him what I expect and sort of got a "feel" for them. One place has a glass window so I watched for a while how the groomer was handling the dogs, etc...Then when I spoke to him, he asked me some good questions and I made an appointment for next week...

Now this is a place I went to with my first OES but that was over 10 years ago and this groomer is not the same as before. But when I told him I had a five month old puppy, he asked me alot of questions...When I told him he doesn't like the dryer much and wiggles around alot, etc, he said that is expected froma puppy and didn't seem to mind...he also recommended I run the puppy around and tire him out alittle before coming in and if I wanted to, I could stay and watch...I liked him...

The other guy I went to made a comment that Sheepies are nippy, etc and didn't want to do him on the weekend when other dogs are ther...I didn't like his "stereotype" characterization, so guess what? Not going there!
