Snopes actually tells you the true story behind that photo:

I dunno if Snopes has it right this time. I give the benefit of the doubt to the photographer.
He tells a convincing story, and what is the difference between (as Snopes, tells it) the hand "flopping out" and "reaching out". Supposedly the Dr. has also claimed that he "reached in and pulled it out". Wanna know my take? If the doctor didn't reach in and pull it out, then the baby wasn't anesthetized and there would be a problem for the doctor (and his career) for operating on an "aware" fetus... But we'll never know for sure! |
I forgot to add if anyone watches HOUSE, this was the picture in the show.
I read the Snopes thing too, hubby always checks it out. I don't know who's telling the truth, but the fact is they did the surgery. And the baby lived, and is healthy...it is an amazing thing what can be done and how advanced the technology has come. This was also done in 1999. |
Wow that was an amazing story! Thanks for posting it.
I too decided after viewing all the material to believe the photographer. He appears genuine in which he wants to be vidicated even long after the fact which is a sign of his telling the truth, I believe. His reason that the doctor was miffed as he lost the chance of being on Life magazine sounds plausible too. Either way the photograph is amazing. One of my former students Jason had Spinal Biffida and now his portrait is displayed in one of the local high schools close to my home. Jason lost his battle at age 14. I shed a tear or two at the memory when reading this story and remember Jason, and glad science has evolved where this type of surgery is possible. |
That HOUSE episode just came on, and it was definitely one of my favorites!!!! |

Ditto... I tend to believe Snopes on this one though. |
