Fire Destroys Humane Society Most Dogs Were Saved; Many Cats Perished JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A massive fire overnight has destroyed the Jacksonville Humane Society on Beach Boulevard. According to the Jacksonville Fire-Rescue Department, the fire broke out about 2 a.m. The roof of one of the building collapsed and at least one firefighter was hospitalized with injuries. The executive director of the Humane Society praised the fire department for saving as many animals as they did. "We thank ever so much the extra effort the fire department made in saving all the animals they could," Leona Sheddon said. "In fact, several firefighters suffered injuries -- not life-threatening injuries -- in saving animals, and certainly they are heroes to us." The Red Cross also responded to the scene to provide mental health counseling to anyone who needs it. In addition to losing animals and kennel facilities, Sheddon said the Humane Society lost it veterinary facilities and supply medications. Sheddon said the Humane Society's thrift store on Beach Boulevard and Foster Drive would be open Saturday until 5 p.m. to accept cash, check and credit card donations. On Monday, the group expects to set up accounts at Wachovia Bank to accept donations The cause of the fire was not known. Fire investigators were on site and planned to spend Saturday trying to determine how the fire started. http://secretwoods.com/jacksonville.com/fire.shtml |

That's not good.
It seems amazing they got out as many animals as they did. What a loss for their community. |
That is such a shame and so sad about the poor kitties. |
Oh how terribly sad. Just breaks my heart thinking of all the animals that perished. I hope the fundraising goes well and people in the community help out.
