This story breaks my HEART! Can anyone help? I would adopt both of them, their story sounds so much like MY Mynie!!!! http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/dis ... id=8139864 |

Okay... time for probably a really dumb question
I've been reading up on this little boy since he showed up on PF. Do they ever do heart transplants on dogs?? Just wondering if a teaching hospital might give him a chance to live. I know there are tons of meds required to keep humans from rejecting the foreign tissue but is this an option for dogs? I see they mention respiratory compromise too so again, maybe it's just another of my dumb questions. |
Well, I know that CSU does pace makers. I am unsure of transplants...... |
i am still crying about this one |
Hi,
That was a very interesting question regarding transplants but we all know the sad reality as in order for one to live another must die for a transplant to take place. With people it's usually due to accidents and the heart must be harvested immediately. I personally wouldn't want to see this choice being made for dogs as knowing our society it may mean taking an unwanted dog and allowing a well beloved pet to survive. Perhaps not, but that was my first reaction. Maybe you guys see it differently. This story proves there are angels walking amongst us - those ladies that take the hospice dogs for example. How wonderful they must be! Poor little pup, the story does pull on your heartstrings and I hope he enjoys his limited life to the fullest. Marianne and the boys |
Yikes. Yeah... you've gotta take that to the next step in the thought process. It's not like being on a human waiting list for an organ transplant. Over 9 million pets are purposely destroyed each year but that's a whole 'nother ethical issue... why not save the dog that has the good heart
I hate to see the little one suffer so. |
They do give them pace makers. I know of one dog that received a pace maker, the operation was performed by a human heart surgeon.
But this don't happen very often. Well there again, those horrible back yard breeders and puppy mills are acountable for this, do they care? No way, they go on breeding and lots of fools out there will buy their pups. With each century humans are supposed to get smarter, but I swear, we are getting dumber. |
I'm very happy that he has a loving home to help ease his burden |
Take a look at the update for Sir Scruffy McDuff!
Read the April 27th and 28th updates... they will definitely make you smile http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/dis ... id=8139864 There's a new picture of this little stinker... boy, is he adorable! http://www.petfinder.com/fotos/MO260/MO ... 64-1-x.jpg |
Received email today about Scruffy & Lady Di
I also attempted to upload new photos (so check my camera icon in case I correctly uploaded Scruffy's photos). Here is email; Hey Sue, We share your happiness over how well Scruffy is doing. Lady Di updates are posted on her profile on Happy Tails. She is doing splendidly. She does play with the other fur-kids in the household. She will probably always be a puppy in her mind, playful. Her new guardian accepts that. We were thrilled when they failed Fostering 101, adopted her. She was blossoming under their care. I have been in touch with the rescue where both fur-kids came from. It never ceases to amaze us how much better fur-kids do with LOVE and TLC. We took them in, found them foster homes, and then they got much more individual attention. Of course, we have to chuckle. We took them because we thought they would die soon. Ruins our Hospice program concept. Yet, we are THRILLED they are doing better. It just goes to prove that with LOVE they will thrive just like humans who feel loved. The will live is strong. Scruffy coughs, raspy sounding, yet very playful. He has to be kept away from the small old ones here as he may hurt them. He did spend most of yesterday in the medium dog play area, sharing play time with Lucy and Patches. Lucy is senior, yet very active. Patches is 2YO. Because they are all similar in size, it was a lovely day for romping together. Mark is working on travel plans. Our trucking plan doesn't appear to be coming together. Last night Mark wanted measurements on Scruffy, will plan to fly in, get him, fly back with him as carry on. That is, barring any weight gain. He is 19 lbs. Just hope he doesn't go over 20 or 21 as I "think" that is the limit. I can't cut back on his feed for a whole week. He is a growing boy. Thanks for asking. I HOPE we never get in another OES Hospice pup. Yet, if we do, we will immediately contact Mark, ask him to network his OES contacts. We don't want to do puppies, yet they need LOVE and TLC for whatever time they have left. We are simply not really set up on-site to do puppies. Foster homes are a MUST have for them. If we have a foster home, we can take them in. later PS Little PUppita Venus, Hospice chi, was adopted. Amazing. She was so sick upon arrival, was doing splendidly by the time she left. Gr 5/6 heart problem PLUS a hole in her heart. Who knows how long she may live? Alas, Lil Poncho never made it 24 hours. Hydrocephalus (sp?) and head was so swollen, headaches so severe. Doc recommended putting him down immediately, yet I really thought LOVE would save him. It didn't yet he was LOVED for his last hours on this earth. Marti walked the floor with him that night. Yay for Scruffy...I have been watching his updates. He looks so good and is getting so big!!! |
I just had to post about this little guy again after I heard from Judy last night. The only reason I followed up is because I had an application in place as a back up if Scruffy's adoption didn't happen so I'm thrilled with the news of his "cure" and improvement.
Turns out all three of the docs had been reading backwards x-rays. Scruffy doesn't have situs inversus (organs on the wrong sides)... the x-rays were labeled backwards Here's the update from Mark in Connecticut as posted on Petfinder... it appears he had pneumonia and is now 80% improved. http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/dis ... id=8139864 05-17 - Mark called to tell us Scruffy is doing fine. They were in PA at the time of the call. He is behaving well, ate supper, does his duty when they stop at regular intervals. 05-19- Mark called to give the update on Scruffy. Mark moved up his vet appt., as Scruffy was coughing much worse. Vet reviewed the records we sent, then started completely from scratch. A mixture of OOPS and Yeah!! The x-rays do not show inverted organs. It appears there was an OOPS when the original x-rays were labeled. While Mark's vet is disappointed to not have a special invertus case, he is elated at this good news. A CBC was done, temp elevated at 105 so Scruffy is on a round of antibiotics. The diagnosis is pneumonia, fluid on the lungs. It is hoped he will show improvement by mid-week. We are pleased that Mark's vet began at the beginning. The best vet in the world may make a mistake. This pup had already seen 3 different vets. We and our vets are human. Mark will update us later in the week after the meds have had a chance to work. 05-22 Mark called with an update. Scruffy is doing well on the meds, nose not runny, cough is intense, not as frequent. He is running, playing, coming along nicely. Scruffy has a follow-up visit with the vet on Friday. Mark is to call with a progress report. Lots of paws are crossed for Scruffy and Mark. A message from Scruffy himself- "LIFE IN CT IS GREAT,AND I FEEL 80% BETTER ALREADY DADDY WILL CALL YOU LATER TODAY MR.SCRUFFY" |
This dear pup is undergoing surgery today to hopefully give him a chance at living a close to normal life. Scruffy, now known as PJ, is having a lobe removed from his lung... there's an abcess that needs to come out or he'll continue to battle upper respiratory infections like pneumonia... antibiotics can become less effective as they're repeatedly used so this procedure will give him the best possible chance.
All the white light and prayers you can muster would be so much appreciated. http://www.Wigglebus.com/PJupdates.html |
wow what a story and thanks for the update my prayers are with him what a cutie |
Best wishes to PJ!! He's come such a long, long way. I hope for a successful surgery and speedy recovery. |
I don't have permission to simply cross post Laurel's update about PJ so I'll pass along the highlights...
PJ's doctor said "(PJ) is doing well, the tubes are out and they are titrating him off the narcotics to non-steroidal pain meds." If things go well, he'll go back in a few weeks to have his staples removed. And believe it or not, he may be coming home as soon a tomorrow barring any unforeseen problems. I'm sure his recovery will take time and careful monitoring. I so hope this will cure him of his breathing problems. The little puppymill sheepie that entered the Missouri doggy hospice... 7 Bell's Sanctuary... back in March has come a very long way with the help of The Big Guy Upstairs and some really good people. If anyone would like to make a donation, there's a PayPal link near the bottom of this page- http://www.wigglebus.com/PJupdates.html or you can visit the NEOESR website... http://neoesr.org/donation.htm . Donations to OES rescues empower them to help special sheepies like PJ and all the others that will unfortunately follow. |
Way to go PJ! Get better soon. |
PJ went home today... amazing how
fast a young sheepie can bounce back. http://www.wigglebus.com/PJupdates.html |
