Chevy was the first opportunity I had to get an OES. I was looking through Petfinder and discovered that there was a female OES in the shelter in Oromocto, NB. I contacted them, but disappointedly discovered that she was already in the process of being adopted. They asked me if I would be interested in coming to see a Male that had just been fixed, but had not been seen yet. My response - Absolutely! So, with no supplies, but an open mind I drove from Saint John to Oromocto to see this 'newly fixed male.' It was love at first site. He seemed so pathetic, was 10 years old, had been used as a stud, but was thoroughly neglected. They were so pleased that I would drive an hour and a half to see him that they let me fill out the applications and take him that day. He was a senior, but I knew that even if he only lived another day, he was worth it. He'd had a very hard life and deserved to have a happy, healthy, loving retirement home. I've recently discovered that he is one of the 'Canadian Capers' - and father to many others. So now, over a year later and fully equipped with brushes, clippers, food that makes his tummy feel good, and lots of experience with grooming and bathing an OES, we decided it would be a good time to get Chevy a 'little' brother or sister. On March 16, I found Trigger on PetFinder. I fell in love with his picture and emailed my husband to see what he thought. We emailed back and forth discussing the distance and then agreed to contact NEOESR. So I emailed Grannie Annie, and she wrote back very quickly to let me know that he was still available. We completed the application, and several interviews. We made all the arrangements and got time off work for the drive to pick up our new baby. We spent about 10 hours on the road before we finally arrived in Merrimack New Hampshire. We met Tigger and his foster family. They were all wonderful. Invited us into their home and told us everything we needed to know about Tiggy. We practiced walking him around the yard, and took some pictures. By the time we were ready to go, Tigger very happily got into the car with us and we drove off together. We made numerous pitstops along the way home, as Tigger was still in the potty-training process. It took another 10 hours to get home, but he was wonderful the whole way... slept most of it. So when we got home, we again tried to potty, then went in to bed - at 4:30 in the morning. It was a very long day! By the end of the first week, there were no more accidents in the house, he wasn't interested in the cupboard since there was no food within reach, and we switched to a gentle-leader for walking. It has now been two weeks and as long as we stick to our routine, he's a perfect dog. He does find it frustrating sometimes that Chevy doesn't like to 'play' with him. Rob has tought him to fetch a tennis ball - in the house, and when he has extra energy, he runs laps around the inside of the house - this was a new one to us. He knows basic commands, 'sit,' 'get down,' 'want a cookie,' 'go for a walk,' and 'go for a drive.' He also knows that he gets extra attention when he goes potty outside. So now, I would like to express my deepest thanks to Grannie Annie, Jennifer and everyone at NEOESR and Petfiner.com for helping us expand our family with such a special boy. |
