Cauterized Blood Vessel - HUMANS

Has anyone (human) had a blood vessel in their nose cauterized? I had it done yesterday and it was just horrible! I'd rather have a tooth pulled. I just need to commiserate with someone who's had this done.

It was so uncomfortable and now I'm not supposed to blow my nose for 3 days! I felt like I was drowning yesterday. My nose isn't as sore and burning like it was yesterday but now I think I'm finally starting to drain from the Augmentin antibiotics. So, now I feel like I have a cold.

Has anyone go through this?

No, but it sounds bad!! You totally have my sympathy vote. Chewie sends you a puppy kiss too.
There was actually an episode of Monk on USA a few weeks ago where Monk had a bloody nose and they cauterized it at the hospital. Before that I had never heard of doing that.

Sorry it is so painful. Tell Fozzie and Annie they have to give you extra kisses and snuggles. :D

Are you serious? :D Maybe someone recorded it or I can watch it online. I'll have to check.
The title of the episode is Mr. Monk Goes to the Hospital.
For a temporary fix of a bloody nose, you can use Afrin nasal spray. That's what our ENT doctors use, and also the ER docs too. :D It really works - I have used it on patients!

The doc thinks that what started the nose bleed is the use of nose sprays. I very rarely use anything other than presription kind, but I guess you can wear out the tissue in the nose anyway
We use the Afrin only when the nosebleed won't stop. not for routine use.
Let us know how your recovery goes. My son gets chronic nosebleeds (doesn't use any nasal sprays, just has a vessel very close to the surface) and I know he gets tired of the random gushers. He may consider surgical intervention down the road!
I am going to catch he!! for this but I use a squirt of Afrin every night in my left nostril. I have chronic sinus problems and the Afrin allows me to breathe while I sleep.

Stacy, I never had a cauterization before but I did have sinus surgery and BOTH nostrils were packed for 24 hours. I could not get a molecule of air up my nose and had to breathe through my mouth which was most unpleasant. Once the packing was out I wasn't supposed to blow my nose for a week and had to tape gauze on my upper lip to catch the drainage.

So I know how you feel.
Paula, after all that and you still need to use a nose spray? Yuck! I need to move to a different climate.

Dawn, the procedure I had was outpatient. I suppose in the grand scheme of things, it could be much worse, like Paula's surgery. I'm just a big baby! The doctor basically took something that looks very much like a long match which had a chemical on the end. He pressed the tip to the blood vessel in my nose to close it shut. Then, I was on my way. Mom drove me in the effect I felt lightheaded after the procedure. I love my Mommy!
Awww, sowwy youwa havingh this pwobwem.

(I'm just a mouth breather from way back.)
OMG Stacy I can sympathize with you. :(

When I was growing up in Brooklyn (many years ago) our Dr. was just around the corner from our house and I got nose bleeds at least Once a week !
Well the Dr. would have my Mom bring me in every time and he would cauterized it.
I will never forget the pain and to this day I say to my Mom (who lives with us ) "Do you remember when you use to torture me as a child with that crazy Dr.".......... LOL
( I got to make her feel a little bad for it ) :D

I always said if I ever had the nose bleeds again I would NEVER let them do that to me again. I think that crazy Dr. did my nose at least 7 times . :x YUCK............

I feel for you ........Been there It stinks!

I hope you feel better soon............Oh and stay away from those crazy Dr's with the big match stick.......LOL :D
(Thats what they used when I was a kid)

Antoinette
Hey, Antoinette! I can't imagine having this done so many times 8O The methods are still the same..the match stick!

Okay, so I'm supposed to sneeze out of my mouth instead of all from my nose. Well, I have a very loud powerful sneeze to begin with. Fozzie comes running and barking at me and then Annie snaps at him. Then I try to reprimand her during my sneeze and it sounds like a 3 ring circus. Fozzie has learned not to be as interested in my sneezes but now I blow out of my mouth and my lips move and I make that noise when you try to imitate a horse :D 8O

I can't wait to go back to the office!
I went through that a couple of years ago, IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was January and I started to have nosebleeds everynight. I ususally have nosebleeds in the winter because of dry air but this was like nothing I had ever had before. They were GUSHERS and would go on for HOURS. Being a Nurse of course I didn't seek medical help.

I'll never forget, it was a Friday, I was getting ready to leave work and my nose started to bleed. Doug came to pick me up and I had saturated a towel I was holding and it was still bleeding. My medical insurance requires I go to my hospital (which is 50 miles from my clinic) So I told him to take me to the hospital, I figured it would stop bleeding before we got there and I could turn around and come home.

Well, no such luck, it bled and bled and bled. I started sneezing and covered the entire inside of my car with blood. We arrived at the ER, I told him to drop me off and as I walked into the ER I met a couple nurses I had worked with for years and promptly passed out. All they saw was me coming in covered with blood from head to toe and passing out. They thought I had been shot or stabed   So they called a trauma code.

I awoke in the ER surrounded by the trauma team TRYING desperately to tell them it was ONLY a bloody nose. It was total chaos as they were concentrating on every square inch of my body EXCEPT my nose looking for the wound.

ANYWAY, I ended up having my nose cauterized and packed. It was a miserable lousey experience and YOU HAVE MY TOTAL AND COMPELTE SYMPATHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also had to have a blood transfusion because I bled so much and later learned YOU CAN DIE from a nosebleed.
OMG, Ginny! What a traumatic experience all from a bloody nose!
These stories are all so gross and yet I can't stop reading them.
:twitch: :twitch: :twitch: :twitch: :twitch: OMG Ginny! :twitch:

LMAO! I was wondering how this topic would go over on the forum :D
im with jill....they are just gross...but intriguing.... 8O
OMG Ginny. I never knew it could be that bad. 8O

I guess my Dr. from when I was a kid wasn't just crazy.

Thank God your ok ! :D

I guess I will never make fun of another crazy Dr. with a long match again....(ok, so this will be the last time...LOL)

Actually cauterization is done chemically now, not with heat. The actualy cauterization doesn't hurt but the discomfort for the week or two after more than makes up for it!!! I remember when the ENT told me he was going to cuaterize my nose I was waiting for the hot poker but it was just really long Q tips with some kind of Chemical on it.

Stacey, you haven't even gotten to the best part........the area that was cauterized will scab over and for the next month or more you are going have the constant sensation that you need to pick your nose. BUT KEEP YOUR FINGERS away, if you dislodge the scab the bleeding will start and you'll have to have your nose repacked (don't aske me how I know  ).
Good grief - some of the things that happened to ya'll! Uh hope you feel better Stacey?
WARNING! GROSS! DON'T READ IF EASILY GROSSED OUT!

Ugh! I already feel this sensation. The thing is that I don't really know how far up he cauterized. So, I can't tell if what I feel is a scab or crusty boogers  Also, I have a brown line on the tip of my nose from the "burner" thing. I've had a sinus infection for about a month now and I can't blow my nose because of this. I'm now on my 3rd antibiotic (Augmentin)which has given me major diarrhea. The office told me this AM that I will have to wait until symptoms subside before they give me a different med. Basically, I feel like @#%! I think Steve worked late last night so he wouldn't have to listen to me kvetch
POOR POOR POOR Stacy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel your pain!!!

I was on Augmentin last month and it too is a miserable experience!!!

As far as the nose goes, try sterile saline drops. They will help soften the scab and it may be a little more comfortable.
I'm 18-years-old and have suffered nose bleeds for as long as I can remember.

I would get mild (lasting up to 5 minutes) to moderate (lasting 5-10 minutes) about six or seven times a year. This year, however, I've had maybe 20 so far. Thankully none has lasted longer than 10 minutes.

I have also lived with allergies my whole life. Nosebleeds and allergies do not get along well.

The passed two weeks, I have had maybe 15 (small to medium) nosebleeds. ALL of them happened after I "touched" my nose.

I had a small nosebleed today after removing yellow and green mucus from my nose. I knew it was time to go to my doctor.

He said I have a major sinus infection. I was running a low-grade fever of 99.1. I feel normal -- after living with this crap for all these years, I'm immuned to it.

He said that the vessels would have healed normally like they did all the years before if I didn't have this nasal infection. The mucus and bacteria combined in the nose is not promoting healing of the vessel and surrounding membranes.

He put me on an antiobiotic (amoxicillin) and a daily antihistamine (Zyterc). I would like to point out that I have never been on a daily med to lower the histamine in the body. This might work!

He asked if I wanted to see the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) still, and I said "yes." After this infection, I'm ready to nip this in the bud and burn that little vessel that has caused me all this hell.

You guys have had apparent grusome expierences, but this out-patient procedure can not nearly amount pain and anxiety over the years I have suffered because of these episodes.

I go to the ENT in a week.
Welcome to the community and Good Luck!
I just had a blood vessel in my nose cauterized. NO ONE mentioned that the silver nitrate would run down my nose and stain it a great brown besides turning my nostril pitch black... I will a joy to have dinner with on Thanksgiving. I was also told that this will last for about a month.

They told me to put Bacitracin Ointment in my nose and breath it in. I have tried to call the office back but of course they are not there.

Is there anything I can do to get the brown stains off? Can I use the netti pot to rinse my nose!

Hope someone can help
This topic is kinda gross - hope i don't need any sinus surgery or veins in my nose welded. I have a cousin whose husband died holding his nose closed when he sneezed - killed him.

Paula, same thing here. My dad used Afrin every day multiple times. This was before they 'knew'. I still have to use it every now and then. Think it's due to all the dry climate.
My daughter is 3. She has had bloody noses for about 2 years now. At first it was every now and then, but lately it is 4 or 5 times a week. She doesn't have a single set of sheets without blood stains on them. Today we went to the ENT. He said that her nose had to be carterized. It really does worry be because they have to put her to sleep to do it. Bless her heart though, last night she was playing with her baby doll, and treating her doll for a bloody nose.
I just had this done to my nose this afternoon and it doesn't hurt but is dripping all the time.My biggest concern is the dark brown color in the nostril and now under my nose. What is this discoloration from? It looks like *ell! I am so embarrassed by it and the dripping is driving me crazy! Anybody know what turned the skin brown?!!
My 9 year old daughter had it done three weeks ago and for the first few days she was really uncomfortable. Her nose really bad, the doctor had to use the electric tool to burn her vessels, where they usually use sulfur or whatever. The next day she was hurting, but thought she was doing better. The following week she went for her check up and everything looked good, then out of the blue her nose started to bleed again. Not every day, but it almost seemed like it was. So called the doctor, got her in and now I have to take her to Children's hospital because the doctor wants another doctors opinion before he cauterizes her nose again. But other then that she is fine and we will get through this!! So I wish you the best of luck with everything..
My 2 year old daughter just had it done yesterday and she had to be put to sleep
and she is doing just fine she was a little uncomfortable after but shes fine now. The
doctor said this kind of surgery should cause that type of pain.
Wow... had no idea it could be so serious Ginny! I have Factor V so I don't bleed anyway, could cut my finger off and it might ooze a bit but that's about it.
Stacy... I always plug my nose when I sneeze lol... I've been told I shouldn't do that but I always have so I can't see it stopping now LOL
I'm 17, almost 18, and I have to have the same thing done on April 12, 2013... I'm really scared, but I know it will stop my daily nose bleeds. I'm glad I have a lot of loving friends and family who will be keeping me in their prayers.... The doctors are gonna put me out because I told them that if I was awake, I would have an anxiety attack when I saw them standing over me. I also made them aware that I have Factor V, so that makes the bleeding a heck of a lot worse.
I just gotta keep reminding myself of Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength."
I have to pick up my cross daily and follow Him, and it's impossible to carry a cross without suffering.
