Maybe a Stupid Recall Question

Is it only wheat gluten that is affected? And it's something in the "gluten" processing that the problem occurred? What about things like wheat flour, bran or germ? I know the processes for those are different so, I'm assuming, they wouldn't get the Chinese rat poison treatment.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
Wheat gluten is a foodstuff made from the gluten of wheat. It is made by washing dough made from wheat flour in water until the starch is rinsed away, leaving only the gluten, which can then be cooked and processed in various ways.

Quote:
The germ is the "heart" of the cereal kernel, the embryo of the seed, and a concentrated source of several essential nutrients including Vitamin E, folate (folic acid), phosphorus, thiamin, zinc and magnesium. Along with bran, germ is often a by-product of the milling that produces refined grain products.

It seems pretty reasonable that the gluten is the problem and that the flour, bran or germ would come before there was a chance for contamination. What do you guys think? The reason I ask is because I feel like I should toss everything away that has the darn word wheat in it now just for my own piece of mind, but I'm feeling pretty confident that I may be safe with the latter. Up until I started getting paranoid today, everyone's been eating everything and digesting fine so I know I'm overreacting!

According to what I can find the wheat gluten was shipped to America from China. Somehow in the processing in China this chemical melamine slipped into the wheat gluten. The chemical is outlawed in the US but is still used in China to make plastics. So when anyone eats it its like digesting chemical plastic. Don't worry about being paranoid. I am too I check all the packaging now. They say its best to stay away from wheat gluten for awhile.
I think due to our love for animals, many people are overreacting ...including myself!

I was just wondering the same thing as I notice many products I have ARE on the recall but not listed. I called one of the companies (1800 on back of pouch) and they said it's fine. I've got to think if dogs have been eating wheat gluten for decades... it is fine.

If it happened to a human food that we all love, I am POSITIVE I wouldn't stop eating it unless further studies were done that said it will kill me. I don't mean like eating greasy food will eventually kill me. I like that sort of slow death type food.

Truth is: My mom bought way too much food for me and shipped it here to throw it out. It's all about 6 months old too, so that's probably why I don't see the number on the recall even though it's same brand/type/flavor

That makes more sense. I do feel better about the other stuff then. Milkbones stay!
Milkbones are not in the recall. They website says they are fine. They are however; made by Del monte and they just recalled tvarious jerky for salmonlia (sp).
So I'm going through all my foods and I just noticed my nutro natural choice, midwest beef stew is on the list. By "my" ...I mean several pouches were a gift to the dogs from the girl I babysat that dog for a month over the holidays. Her dog and my maltese had it for Christmas. I just called her to tell her, and she said her dog has been throwing up and super sleepy. My maltese hasn't.

I would advise her to take her dog into the vets office immediately.
She has an appt! :) She was very worried when I called her.
I worry about wheat in general now too, for pets and people. I know they insist that none got into the food chain intended for humans, but I really don't feel confident that they have full understanding of anything just yet.
I have to admit, up until today I hadn't really thought
much about this recall since none of my pets' foods were
on the original list. Now I find myself going to find every
single name on the newer list and have become paranoid about
not only the pet foods but ours as well. I have a sinking
feeling this thing is much bigger than we know yet. Maybe
I am over the edge here but doesn't it make sense that
a major ingredient producer would be selling across the
board to many food manufacturers, not just for pet
consumption? Isn't it strange how much we rely on these
food producers to be upfront with info and to continuously
test for the quality of their product, and until something
like this happens we assume that is what they are really
doing.
This whole thing is so sad, especially since it might have
been easily avoided.

From what I've read, I think it's just the wheat gluten.

"...The U.S. Food and Drug Administration blocked imports of wheat gluten from a Chinese company Monday. The agency identified the company as the source of the tainted wheat gluten that caused a massive pet-food recall last week..."
So doesn't that make you wonder if any of the contaminated wheat gluten has found it's way into HUMAN food?
I was curious, too, on whether imported wheat gluten was used in human food (being I live in a state known for growing wheat). I found this link on North Dakota's Wheat Commission page, which indicates that 70 percent of processed wheat gluten is imported, but that the US imports very little unprocessed wheat:

Might have to give up our morning bagels!

Yes, I had seen that already but, at this point, I really am not 100% comfortable with the companies alone telling me that the product is fine. That's why I wanted to understand where all the different wheat products came into play. Thanks, though!
Here are a couple of interesting articles that identify the supplier of the wheat gluten.

"...said the company based in the eastern province of Jiangsu had not manufactured the gluten but had instead bought it from companies in neighboring provinces. She said Xuzhou Anying sold it onward to another Jiangsu company, Suzhou Textile Import and Export Co..."

This Nevada company was an importer from the company above... http://www.chemnutra.com/pr.pdf

You've got God-knows-who making the gluten, suppliers buying it and selling it to distributors who are selling it to dog food makers. I'm disgusted by the lack of quality control and testing that allowed this to get into the food in the first place. Don't we all pay enough for the dog food manufacturers to ensure their products are safe?
:D I have been worried because Willoughby had several cans of the Iam meat and sauce food over a period of months as a "small side" for his main food, Sokid Gold Lamb and rice (no wheat or corn in this). (I took him for a blood test today)I've read all my labels and will no longer buy anything with wheat anything in it until this is over. 8O My brother warned me to be careful of what human food I bought as anything that is outsourced to another country that has few or no controls on the quality of foodstuffs means that we don't know what we're eating. :( His example was dilled pickles which are no longer made in most cases with pickling cucumbers grown locally (ie. CAN or US) but from cucumbers grown in places like India where there are no bans on pesticides etc. Sure enough, my jar of pickles ws labelled "Produce of India". Some of my friends will no longer buy anything unless it has been produced locally or in their case also grown in their garden.
