He has not been eating and he has been kind of sad (seems to me). The vet ran blood works and said he was fine all kidney and liver readings are normal , but he said his cholesterol level was high . He said that it was ok and that dogs owners don't have to worry about these levels. Has anyone ever heard of that before? He is a new Vet at my Vets office and Harley LOVED him (well then again Harley loves everyone ) But I wanted to see what you all think about Cholesterol levels in our dogs. Harley is only 1 year old and has high Cholesterol this worries me........... Oh and the vet seems to think Harley is sad because he is worried about me ( I just had a Hysterectomy a little over a week ago). Could it be ? Antoinette |

Has he been tested for low thyroid too? They often go hand-in-hand.
Oops... should probably provide a link to support this statement- "...The most common biochemical abnormality in hypothyroid dogs is hyperlipidemia, or high serum lipid levels. High cholesterol is observed in 66-80% of hypothyroid dogs..." Source: http://www.gdhfa.org/ThyroidLaBrie.htm You may wish to ask your vet if retesting him in 6 months would be appropriate... to see what his thyroid and cholesterol levels are at that time. Jaci- who has 5 out of 6 dogs on Soloxine for low thyroid. |
Jaci .... OMG I can't believe I didn't think of that YOU ARE SO RIGHT !!!
I read the info. from that web site and he has soooo many of those symptoms. I am going to the vet right now (again) Our vets office is a walk in with 7 vet there and open 7 am to 7 PM Monday through Saturday . (It is so convenient) I will post when I get back ! Thanks again. Antoinette |
Please don't panic. Just a simple little pill divided into two doses a day corrects the problem. It's just something to ask about. |
I wont panic . ( well just a little..LOL)
I had a great Dane years back that had to have the pills also. She did great. I just want to see if that is why he don't feel good. Antoinette |
Sometimes there can be several symptoms... other times maybe only one or two vague symptoms. Having been through this with your Great Dane, you know how easy this condition is to correct.
Emma, our 3 1/2 year old, just started a 30 day trial of Soloxine for low thyoid. Her T4 level was the low end of normal but her cholesterol was higher than the accepted level. So we retest in 30 days. I'll keep watch for an update... Hugs to Harley-boy |
Well I am back from the vet (again...lol)
The vet agreed and said it would not hurt to run the test. They took blood and had to send this one out (I guess they don't run that test there at the office). So now I wait till Friday , the vet said he will call me as soon as it comes back. Thanks so much Jaci for bringing it up to me. I know, like you said it is so easy to control and the difference in the way they feel is amazing with 1 little pill every day. The vet was really nice too. They only charged me for the test $50.00. I will keep you up to date on how he does Till then Thanks again! Antoinette |
