What's this Dad?

Once in a while as I'm walking Barney and Maggie, I'll drop the leashes in a public area like a shopping center and do some stays and downs while I walk away from them. This evening they were real sharp, so on the way home I stopped with them a Silky's frozen Custard. Put them on a sit-stay and walked up to the window to order 2 small cones and a regular one. While waiting for the order I told them to down, and they dropped nicely to the awes of several onlookers.

Then picked up the two small cones and set one in front of each of the guys. They sniffed it, but did nothing more. They had never seen an ice cream cone before and looked at it like, "What's this thing, Dad?". Finally I gave them a "Free" and they stood up and gradually started licking the ice cream, which by now was melting on the sidewalk. No problem, though, since they cleaned up the sidewalk when they finally finished off the cone.

Darn I wished I had a camera. But I won't be doing this too often...their cones cost 1.40 each.

London would like to go to the ice cream parlor as well. She gets her allowance every other friday, but I will warn you if you drop her leash she is going to be in the store eating the ice cream directly out of the case.

I am impressed how well you have them trained.

(I am such a horrible mom - I have got to work more on training her. Bad mommy, bad mommy!)
Wow! You could have probably put out a hat and collected their ice cream payment from the dazzled onlookers! I'm so impressed!
Would you please come and teach that to Simon? I can get him in a down but its with treats and he bounces right back up. Guess we'll just have to work on that. Pam
Are you sure they are sheepies mmmmm ???? lol
That is pretty cool....
Dancer and Sky will sit, and even lay down, but no way would they stay if there is ice cream within a mile. LOL
How cool. there is a commercial here in Arizona(i dont know if its nation wide) where a man is getting a coffee and there is a little girl in a stroller with a cone..he puts his great dane in a stay position and the dane looks longingly at the dripping cone, but doesnt budge...the guy takes his coffee and dog and walks away....

I thought it was a great commercial and wish i could get Panda to do that! George you must be one heck of a trainer...good job......

ps....i think the dog in the commercial deserved a cone of his own :D
What good pups!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :clappurple:

I love that commercial! What AWESOME pups you have. I would have loved to have seen it!
I love the great dane and the ice cream cone commercial too!
I torment my student's dogs at class - treats, jingle keys, throw /roll tennis balls.....
Of course, mine are in the lineup too!
Very cool! 8)
Hi George,

That is impressive!!!! You've done a great job with the training and even more amazing...they waited until the "free" signal from you to start eating!! Yup think you shoulda charged and passed a hat around. I'd even buy the cones to see the miracle!!!

Sending belly rubs to Barney and Maggie.

Marianne and the boys
Wow!! I would love to have seen that George! I sure do admire your dedication and work in training Barney & Maggie. That's just excellent!! :clappurple:
If you have a Dairy Queen in your area, they give out ice cream in little cups for your dog - no charge! Truman just about does laps around the inside of the car when he sees we are in the DQ drive thru!
Thanks for the tip; I'll give them a try ... with a camera next time!
