i just recently adopted a 15 month old male (clipped) OES. he is wonderful ecept for the fact that he grows, barks, and lunges at babys around 2-5yrs, and people over 65. his deadly hostility towads little ones really scares me. he is fine with everyone else (weary at first, but then warms up). what should i do? thanks, erin ***update*** he is no longer is weary of elders |

Do you have children? If so - this problem is especially scary and concerning and I would immediately consult with a behavior specialist. Where did you rescue him from? Maybe they could help too!
From my experience, dogs that have this type of reaction to children are trying to prove their "position" in the pack - they suggest that the child not "threaten" the dog in any way (for example - don't look them in the eye, etc.). Well, I would find this near impossible to expect - what child isn't going to look the dog in the eye??? I think the same goes for the elderly (in terms of trying to prove their position over them). Hi Erin,
I want to convey my sympathy for what you (and your poor husband, too!) are going through. Agression is never easy to deal with. I agree with you and with BritPresSyd that your children are your first priority, also if you live with seniors.... Please check out this post that I made jsut a few minutes ago, your problems sound like they may have similar solutions: http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=1322#8372 Good luck! Let us know if we can help further. |
thanks guys. i do not have kids as of yet. i'm 24 and engaged. i also would never give my new baby (oes) up. he is very special. also his past owners took very good care of him and gave him allot of training and love. however they told us he was not socialized well. and was never around children under 10. |
Welcome to the forum Erin! I hope all goes well for you and your sheepie. What's his name? Do you have any pics? |
