Last week Tucker ran into a tree while running in the yard. A little scrape on his muzzle, didn't look like a big deal. A couple of days later I noticed it had scabbed but the scab seemed larger than the original wound... I cleaned it, and kept an eye on it. By the next day, he appeared to have similar scabs along his muzzle, so I thought he must have been trying to scratch his healing nose and washed those as well. Another day, one of the scabs along his muzzle was swelling and oozing pus. I cleaned it, attempted to pick off the scab so it could drain and applied warm compresses. I called my vet Friday when it was still swollen and concerning me a great deal at this point. The vet was extremely busy, it was late in the day and they had a couple emergencies come in. The vet asked me a few questions and based on my answers said he didn't think it was an emergency but that I could bring him in if I wanted and be prepared to wait as they had emergency surgery to do on a dog who had been hit by a car. I couldn't leave the pups indefinitely so I chose to keep washing it and not go in. The swelling abcessed overnight and exploded Saturday. It was disgusting and he smelled awful, but despite that it looked a little better. Anyway, Tucker exhibited no other symptoms, he was behaving normally, happy as always, eating a ton, peeing and pooping normally etc... but whatever was on his face started to spread. At this point I was getting a bit freaked out. I called the vet first thing this morning and got an appointment for 2:30pm When we got to the vet, Tucker was his usual sweet self Wiggling his butt at everyone, trying to give his squeaky toy (which he carried in) to the vet and nurses, being a clown. He is such a doll. He was wiggly so we had a hard time getting a weight on the scale, but finally stayed still and is 78lbs. He will be 6 months old on Friday. Anyway, the vet diagnosed him with a staph infection. Nasty, but quite common. Staph lives on dogs skin anyway, hitting the tree gave it an opportunity to invade his skin and go nuts. It spreads like wildfire, but thank goodness is easily treated and should clear up quickly. He was given injections of antibiotics, antiinflammatories, oral antibiotics and a prescription ointment as well. The vet said I should see improvement daily. This was especially good news as Tucker is entered in a show on Friday. LOL It's not contagious, but looks and smells disgusting. Here is his face pre vet appointment. I had banded the hair away from it to allow air at it. I'll post another pic as it heals.... |

Poor guy I'm sure it looks worse that it feels. Don't you just love it when you take them to the vet and they don't act ill at all! It just cracks me up everytime we go. Hope you feel better soon Tucker. Sport your war wounds you may look like that but I'm sure the tree looks much worse. |
Gross! That really sucks for poor Tucker. Who'd see that one coming? |

That's what I was thinking too! You don't want to overreact to every cut and scrape but then look what happens. Poor Tucker. Hope with the meds, he recovers quickly. . . |
OMG ! That looks so bad. I hope he gets better soon.
Give him a big kiss for me . Antoinette |
Poor baby Tucker! That loooks so bad. He looks good though - such a cute boy. . I hope things mend and he is able to be a handsome boy for his show this weekend! |

Poor Tucker
As soon as I started reading about the spread my first thought was staph, nasty stuff!!!!! |
Oh ick! Poor guy |
Well the good news is the yucky spots are dried up, which is a good thing. The bad news is it looks worse because it's scabbed and the hair doesn't move as freely. Yuck.
The vet said I could work the scabs off as I brush him in a couple of days, hopefully the worst of it is off by Friday |
Poor sweet little Tucker! He will look great by Friday Stacey! |
Poor Tucker
He is like the little kid who manages to get some sort of injury right before school picture day Hope he heals up soon |
For the show, wash it off, blow it dry and cover with cornstarch?
WhaddoIknow |

WhaddoIknow It can't just wash off. If the scabs are not ready to come off it would bleed, it has to be to the point where they are coming off... but of course still stuck to hair. I will be doing something similar though |
I don't suppose they make that spray on hair for balding men in white?
If I was a judge I think Tucker would wow me just with his spunk |
oh tucker! poor boy- Walter sends his sympathies he also got himself all cut up recently (not quite so bad or gross though!) |
POOR TUCKER. I will tell you what my MOM told me when I had chickenpox. DON'T pick the scabs or you will get a scar. I didn't listen and she was right, I have scars where I picked the chickenpox scabs.
Get well Tucker and don't let your Mom pick off your scabs. Oh, and I forgot to tell you, you're still adorable even with your boo boo. |
