I shaved my baby

I use this website for info all the time but have just now decided to join. Mostly because I can't believe how shaving my sheepie has affected me... I need someone to tell me I'm not nuts .... although I am a little.

I have a 16 month female named Selah, she is a big beautiful girl. I had been doing so good at keeping her groomed until January. My mother in law went into the hospital which began our drive back and forth to MI every week. Our life was turned upside down and we ended up losing her. Anyway, Selah wasn't groomed for about 2 months although she had a bath which made matters worse.

Since the weather turned warm, I thought I would cut her down to about 2 inches like I did last year when she was about 45 lbs not 85lbs ... I said she was big. Well, that wasn't working and I had started with head ... dumb, dumb, dumb ...

I had no choice so I purchased the Oster A5 Golden per forum recommendation. It wasn't like a hot knife thru butter but I did manage to finish. I didn't do to bad a job .. she did bite my thumb twice ... but we made it through.

The problem now is I want to cry every time I look at her. She looks like a gangly teenager with long skinny legs. I literally feel like I'm grieving. The funny thing is I grew up with a OES that we shaved every year. I knew what she was going to look like but now I can bearly stand to look at her. Has anyone ever felt like this or am I truly nuts?

Thankfully, I know it will grow. But I am now a proud owner of expensive clippers I may never touch again. I justified buying them to my husband by telling him if I used them twice they would pay for themselves. I don't think I have it in me to shave her again. There goes my arguement. Hubby is already telling everyone at church that I will spend more money and time on my dog's hair then my own ... now this. Does anyone out there understand?

I understand! The first time I groomed Panda, I wanted to cry. I did such a BAD job on her....Ive gotten better, not great, but better....Panda doesnt seem to care and she really likes the short look....It grows sooo fast that I wouldnt worry too much....she is still your baby.....
I cried after we clipped Clyde last year. It really bummed me out and it took me awhile to get over it. But, now that it's been a year, his hair grew back so beautifully, and was so much easier to maintain as it grew, I don't regret the decision-- but I won't be doing it again!
Awwww, I'm sorry you are feeling this way. :(

But the VERY good news is, the hair grows back quickly!

We always feel a little sad when we shave down our dog, but we LOVE it when he's so cuddly! :D

Maybe if you think of it like a Spring 'do!

If you really can't bring yourself to do it again, I would imagine you could get at least 50% of your purchase price back from someone either here on the forum, or through eBay. Let me know and I'll help you get the word out to our members. But give it time, you may find you feel better about it... and next time you'll do even better!

As for the biting, make sure those clipper blades aren't getting too hot!!!
BTW, it IS that time of year for Mulligan again!!! :D Just waiting as long as possible to get to the warmer weather, but 4/1 is the date we like to get to. :D
Awwww I know the feeling... but as Ron mentioned, it DOES grow back, and quite fast too! :)

Don't feel badly, I get that same line from my husband too. We have a fortune in grooming equipment. The cost of good clippers can be less than a couple of trips to a groomer. Although you may not want to use them again, they do come in handy. Since you bought nice clippers, you can always get your money back by selling on eBay, etc., but when you get more comfortable with Selah's summer 'do, you'll probably want to hang on to those Oster's.

Welcome from another Indiana OES fanatic!

You say that as though it is something unusual or somehow strange, peculiar or crazy!! No, it is entirely normal, after all they have far more hair than us anyway so it is only the natural order of things that they get more money and attention paid to their hair. Even Michele says this to people who come over and talk to us at shows while we are getting the dogs ready for the ring. :rimshot:

Don't write off the clippers. Even if you don't use them for a full body clipping again :phew: they are very useful for sanitary clips on the belly area and for cleaning out the hair between the pads. Look at it this way, the clippers will last a lot longer with the more limited use regiment.

Most of us have been there, done that, got the tee shirt so you are not alone and yes we all understand. There is nothing wrong with you that a good hairy Bobtail won't fix and until then lots of Bobtail kisses will keep your mind off it.

Stay with us and we'll get both you and Selah through your trials!

Cheers

Carl
The fact that you are grieving the loss of your MIL may have something to do with your reaction too...ANY kind of change can be awful at a time like that. I remember a few years back, when I was grieving over the loss (suicide) of one of my employees, and I found myself bursting into tears over things like a broken mug, or a canceled TV program!

Don't worry...soon you'll not only get used to it, but you'll also have all of those adorable in-between sheepie-fur looks to enjoy! :)
Like Ron, we give our Sheepies a sleek, sporty "do" for the warm weather. The kids love it, cause they can run, play, swim, and roll in the garden compost and not spend hours being cleaned up. I love it for the same reason. :D

The hair comes back well before compost season is over.
Crazy...not. Simon got a "new" do about 3wks ago. We took before and after pictures. Although his cut is fantastic, when I looked at the pictures I liked the shaggy look better. Fast forward to today. I look at the pictures now and like the new "do" better. Like anything new it takes time to get used to it. Its easier to take care of and that makes BOTH of our lives better. Trust me, you are not crazy, I think we all feel that way with a new cut...Pam
Thanks for the encouragement! Unfortunately the weather turned cold yesterday so she is not liking it outside. She will be spending the day inside eventhough she loves to be outside. Oh Well, I live in Indy so if a wait a day or two the weather will change again.

I'm going to hang onto the clippers for now. I got them at Tractor Supply so they said I could return them in 90 days for any reason even if I used them. So I have a little time to decide. I figure I can get smaller blades and use them on her pads since I was using trimmers already.

The funny thing is when I was grooming her she got more upset when I trimmed her feet and beard .... which I already have been doing every month. Maybe they just had a different sound. Oh Well.

Thanks again !
