Well no parasites. Vet figures she has a sensitive stomach perhaps even irritable bowels. thinks I should put her on a low fat; bland diet. |
Poor Laika's tummy. I don't have any recipes, just sympathy. |
Thanks I am trying to not be too frantic. Awhile ago my bengal cat died and he was having lots of problems with his stomach. They figured it was genetic that I probably couldn't have done anything something with the liver also. But it is like it is happening all over. |
hello.
I have a similar situation. Please read my posting under coccidia-urination issues. |
Poor Laika! I am amazed at what a difference that trying different brands and formulas can have on the quality of their output. Do you have speciality dog food stores near you? I hope you can find something she can tolerate. |
Oooh - soft stool aren't fun. Good luck with everything. Maybe a digestive enzyme would help as well? |
I would also suggest getting Laika Enzymes to help her.
Florazyme & Prozyme are two brands for dogs. Only a pinch over there food each night so it lasts for a long time and aids in digestion and helps to firm the stool. Home preparation of food, wonderful books there, try and get one written by Holistic vets as it gives all the right balances there for a growing dog. Good one that I have is The Holistic Animal Handbook by Kate Solisti-Mattelon and Patricia Mattelon Foreword by Robert Silver DVM It has a wonderful balanced feeding guide in it. There is a few different ones available so if you can contact a Holisitic Vet there, they might be able to recommend one to help with Laikas diet. |
Well seems kind of quick might be hopeful thinking but I cooked for her last night and she had it again this morning and she had a good poo! Well see what her day care mom says tonight. |
Two days of good POOS! Honestly isn't all about the poo!
But this is hard I am really worried am I giving her enough food. Enough chicken. Does anyone on here cook for their dog? I would really love a recipe with chicken. Vet says to start out low fat for now nothing to rich. I would love love love if some would could help me |
This is what I am cooking up for her...
chicken rice oatmeal carrots blueberries apples cottage cheese eggs peas I have Yucca for her food. But I live in a small town and when I go into the city I will pick up bonemeal. Any recommendations on a other supplements and how much to give?? |
How is Laika doing? Still seeing improvement? |
Green beans too! That's a popular treat at my maltese board, so I assume big dogs probably love it too. |
Hey I'm glad to hear that Laika's doing better! If you want to feed her a completely cooked diet I heard on a natural oes list that these books are recommended:
Becoming the Chef Your Dog Thinks You Are by Micki & Yogi Voisard Cooked Diet Recipes by Monica Segal Canine Nutrition by Lowell Ackerman, D.V.M. Although I don't cook for Bingley so I haven't read these books, they probably explain alot about making sure you're hitting all the nutritional requirements. I imagine they talk about supplementing as well. In addition to Bingley's raw diet I supplement with fish oil, vitamin E and a little bit of nupro. There is a TON of controversy surrounding which supplements to give, not give, etc. but it truly depends in my eyes on the diet you are preparing. If you know you fall off in certain nutritional areas you should supplement accordingly. If you are strong in certain areas you probably don't need to supplement. When I first switched Bing from kibble to a raw diet I gave him digestive enzymes but he hasn't needed any for about 2+ months now. They can't hurt, they can only help in my eyes. At the same time, why give something that isn't necessary?! I hope Laika continues to improve, please keep us updated. I also advise you to find a mentor in your area (if you can) who is familiar with cooking for dogs or as Lisa suggested a holistic vet. I know in my transition I have appreciated it!! |
My guy Brumley, just started with diarrhea last week, the VET gave him Hill's prescription diet and now says he may need to be on the expen$ive stuff full time. Does anyone have any other home remedies for supplements to help bind him up? |

I'd look around yourself first before keeping him on the vet food. If this is just a one time bout of diarrhea, and not a chronic problem, it shouldn't be necessary to switch to that food. Some vets push those foods because they make money off of them. Did the vet give you any medication or take a stool sample? |
I had this problem just before the food recall. Thought maybe I had a bad bag of food but when I tried a new bag same thing...vomit and really loose stool...Went through much money in testing with nothing coming up. So I did my own research and found many dogs have an intolerance to wheat gluten, soy and corn. So, I took my puppy off everything with any of those ingredients and guess what...he is doing fine. Nice solid formed poops and no vomiting at all...
I did the boiled chicken and rice bit for about ten days. Then introduced him very slowly to his new food, Wellness Puppy, chick flavor. He had one day of some loose stool but got over it quick. He has been on the food for about 3 weeks now and still doing fine. I add alittle plain boiled rice to each meal too. |
I had Laika on Innova and Wellness. So who know what the problem was. She is doing good with home cooking. |
Might seem too obvious but...are you over feeding her? Over feeding is one of the main causes of loose stool. I know my guy would eat and eat and eat if I didn't regulate the food
Maybe you are just too good a cook! |
My dog Kenai has renal failure. She often has a very upset tummy.
I have found that natural foods section of stores carry baby colic tablets, I give her 8 per day, one lactobacillus and one prilosec (vet said to). When she is really bad Baby tonic called "Little Tummy's " or "Gripe Water" work VERY well...one tsp up to 2 time a day. *She had lost 8 lbs and was suppose to die seven months ago. with this treatment she has gained back 5 lbs and still runs about . Kenai is a huskey, 14 yrs old and 60 lobs hope that helps |
How is the home-cooking going, spacegirl? |
Has been actually going great until last night; it was getting softer and mucus like last night and this morning. oh my.
My vet figures she might have irritable bowels |
Oh my. Time for a special diet? |

My vet figures she might have irritable bowels Have they run multiple tests for giardia? |
I don't know he said he checked for parisites. I will call and ask thanks. What is that again? |

The problem with Giardia is that they can run the test 10 times and still possibly not see it. If he runs the test and it is still negative you could ask him for medication anyway...just in case it is there. |
oh thanks so much I will talk with him. |
